Abstract

Curriculum is a fundamental component of the education system that determines the direction, content, and quality of learning in schools. This conceptual article aims to analyze the philosophical, juridical, conceptual, theoretical, and empirical foundations that underlie the development of the 2013 Curriculum in Indonesia. Using a library research approach, the study explores the relationship between national education goals and curriculum design principles. Findings indicate that the 2013 Curriculum is supported by philosophical foundations rooted in Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, juridical legitimacy through educational laws, conceptual frameworks emphasizing competence and scientific learning approaches, theoretical bases derived from modern learning theories, and empirical evidence from educational practice. The article concludes that the integration of these five foundations ensures that the 2013 Curriculum aligns with the vision of national education in shaping holistic, competent, and character-based learners. Keywords: Curriculum Development; Education Philosophy; Juridical Foundation; Learning Theory; 2013 Curriculum

Abstract

This study examines the construction of traditional and modernist Muslim identities in Indonesia within contemporary social, cultural, and religious contexts. The central problem of the research concerns how historical dynamics, education, modernization, and globalization have shaped the distinctive characteristics and interactions between these two groups. The objective of this study is to identify the defining features of each group, the factors influencing shifts in religious identity, and their respective contributions to the development of Islam in Indonesia. This research employs a library-based methodology with descriptive qualitative analysis, utilizing scholarly documents, academic literature, and historical sources as primary data. The research subjects include the social representations of traditional and modernist Muslim groups in Indonesia, particularly those affiliated with pesantren networks and modernist Islamic organizations across the archipelago. The findings indicate that traditional Muslims serve as custodians of religious tradition, cultural heritage, and spiritual continuity, whereas modernist Muslims function as agents of transformation through rationality, modern education, and reinterpretation of religious texts. The interaction between these two groups generates a dialectical process that enriches the diversity of Indonesian Islam while fostering the emergence of a more moderate, adaptive, and inclusive religious expression. The study concludes that these identity constructions complement one another in strengthening the dynamic, plural, and progressive development of Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the cultural foundations of Muhammadiyah from the perspective of Progressive Islam (Islam Berkemajuan) through a library research approach. The study was conducted by examining scholarly literature published within the last ten years related to the cultural dynamics within the Muhammadiyah movement. The findings indicate that Muhammadiyah’s cultural foundation is an integral part of the purification and modernization processes that have been in place since the era of K.H. Ahmad Dahlan. The main findings reveal that the dialectic between normative theology and local culture has shaped a movement characterized by rationality, ethical values, and progressive orientation. Progressive Islam strengthens this dialectical pattern through three core principles: religious rationality, universal human ethics, and practical social engagement. This study fills a gap in previous research, which has not comprehensively examined the relationship between theology and culture within the framework of Progressive Islam. The implications of this article demonstrate that Muhammadiyah’s cultural foundation serves as an epistemological basis for developing an Islamic paradigm that is inclusive, moderate, and oriented toward civilizational advancement.

Abstract

The Muhammadiyah Islamic movement, founded by KH Ahmad Dahlan on 18 November 1912, emerged as a response to the socio-religious degradation under colonial rule, grounding its religious orientation in the purification of Islamic creed based on the Qur’an and Sunnah from elements of shirk, bid‘ah, and khurafat. Through the concept of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam), Muhammadiyah integrates pure monotheism, progressive renewal (tajdid), the principles of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, and the vision of rahmatan lil ‘alamin as an embodiment of the ummatan wasathan (the justly balanced community). This study employs a library research method by analyzing several historical works on Muhammadiyah, foundational doctrinal texts (Matan Keyakinan), and academic articles from the Majelis Tarjih scientific archives. Muhammadiyah is an Islamic reform movement in Indonesia that seeks to eliminate bid‘ah, superstition, and khurafat from societal culture. Rooted in the Qur’an and Hadith, Muhammadiyah is committed to developing sound, pure, and enlightened religious thought.
