Abstract

Work engagement serves as one of the dimensions contributing to the development of professional identity. This article aimed to describe the level of work engagement of school counselors, and the influence of work experience and educational background on counselors' work engagement. To this end, this comparative study involved school counselors as participants of the study, recruited using an incidental sampling technique. The participants were asked to share the invitation link to several school counselor social media groups in Indonesia. A work engagement scale adapted from the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale was employed to collect the data. The data were analyzed by inferential statistics using two-way ANOVA. The result shows that the average work engagement of participants was categorized as high. It was also found that work experience and educational background did not affect counselors' work engagement. The results of this study serve as preliminary findings of a complete framework for further research on the professional identity of school counselors in Indonesia.

The present study served as one of basic research which is attempted to depict early childhood teachers and educators’ perspectives on the implementation of guidance and counseling services in Raudhatul Athfal (RA) and Islamic Kindergarten (IK). To this end, a descriptive exploratory method was applied by involving early childhood educators from six RA and IK in Serang City. The data were collected using an open ended questionnaire, observation, interview, and study documentation and analyzed using the interactive analysis model consisting of three stages: data display, data reduction, and generalization. The findings indicated that, in general, although participants in this study considered guidance and counseling services important for preschool children, they had not understood the mechanism in implementing the services and the individual who should provide the services. Following the findings, a perceived ideal guidance and counseling model that suitable for the Islamic early childhood education is the model which is based on Islamic values derived from Al Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet.

Abstract

There has been an increase in suicides in Indonesia in recent years. Suicide is the leading cause of death in the 15-29 age group. Suicide attempts begin with suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation arises because the pain or suffering experienced by individuals occurs continuously. This study aims to analyze suicidal ideation that arises due to hopelessness and the desire to be free from pain in adolescents. Data were collected using a questionnaire adapted from the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). The study was conducted on 1154 students at one of the high schools in Central Java. The results showed that 12% of students had the idea to make a suicide attempt. Further results showed that 86% of respondents did not have a specific plan to commit suicide, 58% of respondents thought about suicide less than once a week, 41% of respondents were able to control suicidal ideation easily, 40% of respondents thought family, religion, and the pain of death could stop suicidal thoughts, and 35% of respondents made suicidal ideation as an attempt to end pain. This shows that suicidal ideation in adolescents is a problem that needs attention from various parties, one of which is the Guidance and Counseling teacher.
