Abstract

This article examines how sexuality education in Indonesian pesantren can reconcile Islamic tradition with contemporary reproductive health concerns. Although sexuality-related material has long existed in pesantren through classical fiqh and yellow-book instruction, it has largely been limited to legal-formal themes such as taharah, puberty, menstruation, aurat, and marital ethics, with little attention to consent, bodily boundaries, reproductive health literacy, and sexual violence prevention. Using a qualitative critical literature review, this study analyzes Islamic texts and scholarly publications published between 2015 and 2025, retrieved through Scopus and Google Scholar using the keywords sex education, pesantren, Islamic tradition, and modernity. Data were interpreted through content analysis and critical discourse analysis to identify possible intersections between maslahah-based Islamic reasoning and contemporary health-oriented perspectives. The findings show that the main challenge is not the absence of religious material, but the lack of epistemic reconstruction linking classical concepts to adolescents’ lived realities. Three major pathways emerged: expanding sexuality education beyond marital issues, integrating sexual violence prevention and bodily protection into the curriculum, and enriching traditional pedagogy with dialogical and participatory approaches. The study also finds that implementation requires collaboration among kyai, teachers, students, parents, communities, and the state to address sociocultural taboos and institutional limitations. This article argues that pesantren should be viewed not as barriers to sexuality education, but as institutions with internal theological and pedagogical resources for contextual renewal. It offers a conceptual framework for culturally grounded and religiously legitimate sexuality education in pesantren. Framework highlights the possibility of reconciling tradition and modernity.

To check the validity of the data, researchers extended the observation and triangulation of sources and data collection techniques. The results of this study are: 1) The SLM in MtsN 2 Kediri City is implemented through reading corner activities; Wall magazine; environmental conditioning that is full of motivational sentences; habit of reading the Qur'an; as well as assignments on Indonesian Language subjects, the form of assignments such as: summarizing some types of books such as old novels, biographies, fantasy stories and popular knowledge; 2) The benefits of implementing this program are students being diligent in reading, trained in composing sentences, getting to know the types of books, and increasing their knowledge; 3) The constraints faced this program are the lack of available reading material in the library; students have difficulty in getting the type of books required; and difficulties in summarizing thick books; and 4) The implementation of SLM in MTsN 2 Kediri City is categorized in the third level of reading theory of Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren. Abstract

Digital transformation in education has reshaped teaching and learning practices, encouraging Islamic Education teachers to reconsider the ways in which technology can support educational goals and moral development. While previous studies have predominantly focused on digital competence and technology integration, the spiritual and reflective dimensions underlying teachers’ responses to educational change remain insufficiently explored. This study investigates the transcendental pedagogical awareness of Islamic Education teachers in frontier areas of East Kalimantan during the process of digital learning transformation. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in transcendental phenomenology, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers from senior high schools and vocational schools in Berau Regency. The analysis identified four interconnected dimensions of transcendental pedagogical awareness: muhasabah as the foundation of innovative awareness, technology as a value-oriented pedagogical medium, the emergence of teachers as micro digital content creators, and pedagogical resilience in addressing frontier educational challenges. The findings indicate that meaningful digital transformation extends beyond technological proficiency and is sustained by the integration of spiritual reflection, pedagogical commitment, and contextual adaptation. This study proposes the concept of Transcendental Pedagogical Awareness as a framework for understanding value-based digital transformation in Islamic education.

Abstract

Background. The increasing visibility of conservative Islamic expressions in Indonesia reflects broader socio-religious transformations shaped by globalization, democratization, and digital media expansion. Rather than a purely ideological shift, this phenomenon involves the construction and circulation of religious narratives that influence social and educational values. Purpose. This study aims to examine how conservative Islamic narratives are constructed and to analyze their roles and impacts within social and educational contexts in Indonesia. Method. This study employs a qualitative approach using a systematic literature review. Relevant academic sources were critically analyzed through a thematic synthesis, integrating perspectives from critical discourse analysis and social construction theory to explore how religious meanings are produced, disseminated, and internalized. Results. The findings reveal that conservative Islamic narratives are constructed through key discursive strategies, including textual literalism, moral polarization, and the reinforcement of religious authority. These narratives contribute to moral formation, identity consolidation, and social cohesion, but may also generate exclusivism, reduced dialogical engagement, and social polarization, particularly in digitally mediated environments. Conclusion. The study concludes that Islamic conservatism should be understood as a dynamic and contested narrative process. Religious moderation (wasathiyah) is proposed as a strategic counter-narrative that promotes balance, inclusivity, and contextual interpretation, particularly within educational settings. The study also offers a conceptual model linking socio-historical drivers, narrative construction, and social-educational impacts.
