Abstract

The Sundanese people have long recognized bajidoran as an entertainment art form that presents the aesthetics of dance and traditional Sundanese music (karawitan). However, beneath this surface lies the complexity of power struggles and masculine domination among individuals involved in the Bajidoran Enthusiast Community (Komunitas Pecinta Bajidoran or KPB). Interestingly, the power struggles are not limited to men but also involve women. This phenomenon prompts an inquiry into why bajidoran is heavily associated with practices of masculinity. This study aims to address the following questions: why is bajidoran associated with practices of masculinity, how is this construction process carried out, what are the contributing factors, and what are the implications for the KPB?This research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, wherein the researcher values the experiences and realities of the subjects under study, even if they differ radically from their own. The researcher applies three characteristics of this new ethnography: honesty, towards other facts, self-reflection, and polyvocality. Data collection involves literature review, observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings of the research explain that: 1) masculinity is strongly embedded in bajidoran due to: firstly, cultural, daily practices, and historical contexts that construct masculinity, which are dialectically intertwined with the experiences of the KPB, both present and past. Secondly, the situational and practical conditions within the bajidoran arena (social relations and interactions) have great potential to generate masculinity. 2) The process of constructing masculinity involves seven stages: production, socialization, appreciation, internalization and externalization, relationships and interactions, staging, and formation. Eight factors contribute to the construction of masculinity: patterns/sequences, the role of the mc and pesinden (vocalists), pencug ibing (leader), kendang (drum), selendang (scarf), economic capital, alcoholic beverages, and musical elements. The results of this research provide insights for the Bajidoran Enthusiast Community and relevant institutions to reconstruct the staging of masculinity in a way that accommodates gender equality.

Abstract

Abstract

The Transformation of Religious Text Meaning in Indonesian Popular Music: A Reader-response PerspectiveAbstractLyrics are a rich medium for expressing meaning, especially when adapting religious texts to popular music contexts. This article examines the transformation of the phrase "as we forgive those who trespass against us" from the Lord's Prayer in the song "Hagia" by Barasuara, using Wolfgang Iser's reader-response hermeneutic theory. The primary goal is to identify and analyse the shift in the meaning of religious texts when they are moved from sacred to secular music spaces and to explore how music influences this reinterpretation process. The research employed a Hermeneutic Systematic Review (HSR) with a qualitative approach, involving the identification of the original meaning, mapping the songwriter's context (Iga Massardi), and analysing the interaction between the text and the audience through reader-response theory. The results reveal that the original religious meaning, once limited to a ritual context, transforms into a universal message of tolerance and social solidarity. Music plays a key role in expanding the scope of meaning reception, surpassing liturgical boundaries. The study concludes that the meaning of religious texts is fluid, changing based on the socio-cultural context of both the creator and the audience. The findings highlight the potential of popular music as a tool for interfaith dialogue and social reconciliation within Indonesia's diverse society. This research opens new avenues in Indonesian music hermeneutics by showing that adapting religious texts can enhance contemporary religious discussions without compromising their spiritual significance. Its main contribution is the systematic use of reader-response theory to analyse Indonesian popular music lyrics, an approach that has been largely overlooked in earlier studies. The research offers a model for understanding how sacred texts can act as bridges for cross-cultural and interreligious understanding today. This transformation shows that popular music can connect religious values with the needs of a modern, diverse society. It also reveals that the process of transforming meaning does not diminish the spiritual worth of the original text; rather, it broadens its reach, crossing denominational boundaries. These insights suggest how art can help promote interfaith dialogue and tolerance in Indonesia's pluralistic society. Therefore, music serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying universal human values that are relevant to Indonesia's current social landscape. Keywords: hermeneutics; reader-response; popular music; religious text meaning; Barasuara

Abstract

Floating net cages (KJA) aquaculture is an important livelihood source for local community, but it also contributes to eutrophication in Rawa Pening Lake. So, it is necessary to ensure that KJA management is carried out based on the sustainable development principles to minimize the environmental impacts. This study aims to assess the sustainability status of KJA management in Rawa Pening Lake from the ecological dimension. Data were collected through interviews, direct observation, direct measurement and literature study based on following attributes; water quality, water fertility, environmental conditions, biosecurity and fish health. Then, data that has been scored were analyzed by Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) using the RAPFISH application embedded in Ms. Excel). The results showed the KJA sustainability index is 49,567 (poor sustainability category). The most significant attribute of KJA sustainability is water nutrient content, i.e. N:P ratio (leverage = 4,129). It is concluded that the management of KJA in Rawa Pening Lake has been not carried out based on sustainable aquaculture management principles. Therefore, management strategies focusing on controlling water nutrient levels are urgently required to ensure the sustainability of KJA in Rawa Pening Lake.

Abstract

Music-based interventions have been widely explored as non-invasive approaches to emotional regulation and anxiety reduction. Within this context, alternative tuning frequencies—particularly 432 Hz and 528 Hz—are frequently used in therapeutic and wellness practices and are often claimed to exert distinct psychophysiological effects. However, empirical evidence supporting differential neural responses to these frequencies remains limited, and existing claims are rarely grounded in direct measurements of brain activity. This study aimed to empirically examine whether music tuned to 432 Hz and 528 Hz produces differential effects on neural oscillatory activity, as measured by brainwave patterns, with particular attention to indicators associated with relaxation and meditative states. A quantitative repeated-measures design was implemented. Ten undergraduate music education students (aged 19–21 years) from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta participated. Each participant listened to the same musical composition presented in two tuning conditions (432 Hz and 528 Hz) in counterbalanced order. Neural activity was recorded using a single-channel EEG device (Neurosky MindWave), which provides spectral estimates of canonical brainwave bands. Delta-band amplitude was selected a priori as the primary outcome measure. Differences between tuning conditions were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests, supplemented by bootstrapping to address the small sample size. Both tuning conditions elicited increased delta-band dominance during music listening. However, no statistically significant difference in delta-band amplitude was observed between the 432 Hz and 528 Hz conditions (t(9) = −1.29, p = 0.229). Bootstrapped confidence intervals corroborated the absence of a reliable frequency-dependent effect. Under controlled within-subject conditions and using single-channel EEG-derived spectral estimates, no evidence was found for differential modulation of delta-band activity between music tuned to 432 Hz and 528 Hz. The results suggest that neural responses are more strongly driven by general musical engagement than by tuning frequency per se. Methodologically, the study highlights both the utility and limitations of low-density EEG for probing music-related neural oscillations and supports the need for future work employing higher spatial resolution EEG, baseline-corrected spectral analyses, and larger samples to test frequency-specific hypotheses with greater sensitivity.
