Abstract

Paraquat herbicide disrupts the hormone Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), causes testicular damage and changes in spermatogenesis. This study aims to determine the effect of supplementation of green bean sprout extract (Vigna radiata L.) on FSH levels, Sertoli cell counts in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by paraquat herbicide. This research uses true experimental with posttest only control group design. A total of 25 rats were divided into 5 groups: P0 was given standard feed, P1 was given paraquat 4 4 mg/g BW, P2 was given green bean sprout extract supplement (GBES) dose 21.6 4 mg/g BW and paraquat 4 mg/g BW P3 was given GBES dose 43.2 4 mg/g BW and paraquat is administered orally for 15 days. Measurement of FSH levels using ELISA, while Sertoli cells were observed using testicular histology preparate. Mann-Whitney test resulted significance of p<0.05, which showed that the administration of GBES influenced FSH levels and the number of Sertoli cells. GBES doses of 21.6 4 mg/g BW, 43.2 4 mg/g BW, and 86.4 4 mg/g BW were shown to increase FSH levels and Sertoli cell counts in paraquat-induced Wistar rats. GBES increased FSH levels and the number of Sertoli cells in paraquat-induced rats.

Abstract

Introduction: Untreated cuts in some period of time, caused by various reasons, can be a problem. Alternative therapy used to speed up the healing of the cut is Nigella Sativa (NS).Objective: to investigate the number of fibroblast and collagen by giving 40% and 60% NS seed extract on the cut.Methods: post test only control group design, 48 male balb/c strain rats were divided into 2 large groups, with each cage contained 24 rats. Each group then divided to 4. Each group is subdivided into 4. Nigella sativa seed extract ointment with a concentration of 40% (NS-40) and 60% (NS-60) smeared 3x daily for 7 days (fibroblasts) and 14 days (collagen). Evaluation derived from preparations using HE staining and Masson’s Trichrome respectively.Results: Mann Whitney analysis shows that the number of fibroblasts and collagen in the CG group, NS-40, and NS- 6 0 Higher than CN, P <0.05.The number of fibroblasts in the NS-40 and NS-60 was not significantly different compared to the CG, as well as CN-40 with CN-60, p> 0.05. While the number of collagen in CN-60 were significantly higher than CN-40, p<0.05.Conclusion : administration of Nigella sativa seed extract ointment with a concentration of 40% and 60% in cuts for 7-14 days increase the number of fibroblasts and collagen, resulting in a shorter healing period.

Abstract

There has been more research on the iron supplementation. Date juice has been shown to be rich in iron. It has been reported to increase the hemoglobin level in rats. Few studies has been conducted on the effect of date juice on the hemoglobin level in male white Wistar rats fed low iron diet.This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of (Phoenix dactylifera) juice on haemoglobin level in iron supplemented rats. In this experimental study using post test control group design, 24 male white Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. G-I served as the control group (standard diet and aquadest). G II was given the low Fe diet and aquadest for 21 d. G-III,IV were given the low fe diet and aquadest plus date juice at the concentration of 50%, 100% respectively. The treatment was given for 14 days. Spectrophotometer was used to assess the haemoglobin level of rats. One way anova followed by Post Hoc LSD was applied for the data analysis. Mean of hemoglobin (g/dl) level for the four groups were 12,03, 7.72, 9.25, 10.35 respectively. Test resulted in p<0.05. Post Hoc LSD test resulted in a significant different between K-I and G-II, G-III, G-IV ;G-II and G-III, G-IV ;G-III and G-IV. In conclusion, date juice increases the haemoglobin level in male white rats fed on the low fe diet.

Abstract

Background: Pain is the most common complaint of a disease that can be reduced using the analgesic drugs. Besides the pharmacological medication, the traditional medications are available including honey containing flavanoid. The compound can protect the lipid membrane from the damage and inhibit cyclooxygenase, the main path of the synthesis mediator for pain like prostaglandin. This study aims at finding out the efficacy of analgesic of honey using geliate asetate method.Design and methods: In an experimental study using post test only control group design, 25 Wistar rat (80-90 days, BW 180-220 gr) were randomly divided into 3 groups of 5 mice each. Gp1: =aquadest (negative control), Gp2: 0.675 g/BW honey, Gp3: 1.35g honey Gr 4: 2.7 g/kgBW honey and Gr 5 (possitive control): 4.5 mg/ BW of paracetamol. 5 minutes after the treatment, an intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid was given for all groups. Anova followed by post Hoc test was used for data analysis.Result: The honey concentration of 50% (1.35) g was found to have increasing effect of analgesic while the concentration of 25% and 100 % showed a reducing analgesic effect.Conclusion: Honey has been shown to have an analgesic effect in mice with the effective concentration of 50% (1.35 g/kgBW) (Sains Medika, 3(1):48-53).

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: UV-B exposure to the skin may produce ROS, decreasing collagen density and increasing MMP-1 expression. Longan leaf extract cream contains antioxidant and is expected to prevent decrease in collagen density and MMP-1 expression increase.OBJECTIVE: The research aims at administering longan leaf extract cream to increase collagen density and decrease MMP-1 expression in BALB/c mice exposed to UV-B rays.METHODS: This experimental research employed a Post Test Only Controlled Group Design. The subjects were 24 BALB/c mice, which were randomly divided into 4 groups. The Control Group (Ctr-G)was only administered with basic cream and exposed to UV-B rays, while Groups DLS-3, DLS-6, and DLS-13were respectively administered with longan leaf extract cream at doses 3.25%, 6.5% and 13% and exposed to UV-B rays for 4 weeks at a dose of 1 MED. On day 29, a tissue excision biopsy was performed to determine the collagen density and MMP-1 expression. The collagen density preparations were made using Masson’s Trichome staining and MMP-1 preparations were made using immunohistochemical staining.RESULTS: Kruskalwallis analysis showedstatistically no significant differences in collagen density and MMP-1 expression between groups(p value> 0.05).CONCLUSION: Administration of longan leaf extract cream at doses of 3.25%, 6.5% and 13% had proven unable to increase collagen densitynor decrease the MMP-1 expression significantly after UVB exposure.

Abstract

Introduction: Liver plays an important role in the metabolic processes possibly exposed to the toxic materials. One of those hepatotoxic substances is carbon tetrachloride. The propolis extract contains the balsamic active substances, CAPE compounds and flavonoids. Flavonoids can prevent from the apoptosis and reduce the inflammation.Objective: To validate propolis extract’s (CMCE method) ability in improving caspase 3 expressions of hepatocytes and IL-6 levels in Wistar male rats induced with carbon tetrachloride.Methods: An experimental study with a post-test only control group design applied to the study. The research subjects were 28 male Wistar rats, divided into four groups. The negative control group (CN-G) was only injected with CCl4, while the experimental groups were administered with the CMCE propolis at the dosages of 3.6 mg/200g (CM3-G), 7.2 mg/200g (CM7-G), and 14.4 mg/200g (CM14-G). The CMCE propolis extract was administered for 14 days and on day 14, the CCl4 was then given. The caspase 3 expression of hepatocytes was measured using HE liver cell preparations, while the IL-6 levels were measured using ELISA method.Results: The results of Mann-Whitney U statistical analysis showed that the hepatocytes’ caspase 3 expressions in CM14-G (2.77 ± 0.531), CM7-G (3.14 ± 0.378), and CM3-G (4.22 ± 0.690) were lower than those in CN-G (5.43 ± 0.535), p<0.05. Meanwhile, the Post Hoc LSD analysis Results showed that IL-6 levels in CM14-G (55.032 ± 9.336), CM7-G (78.362 ± 8.313), and CM3-G (114.975 ± 10.359) were lower those in CN-G (180.301 ± 5.428), p<0.05.Conclusion: the administration of propolis extract (CMCE method) improve the caspase 3 expressions of hepatocytes and Il-6 levels in Wistar male rats induced with carbon tetrachloride.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The UVB exposure may cause sunburn (second degree burn). Aloe vera (AV) is widely used in wound healing, including sunburn.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of topical Aloe vera extract gel on the number of macrophages and epithelialization in UVB induced sunburn.METHODS: This posttest only-control group design used twenty female BALB/c mice with UVB-induced sunburn randomly divided into 4 groups. Control groups (Cntrl-G) were given a base gel. Group AV-25, AV-50, and AV-75 were topically treated with Aloe vera gel at the concentration of 25%, 50% and 75% respectively for 5 days. On day 5, after terminated, the samples of skin tissue were prepared for histological study using hematoxlyin eosin (HE) staining. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA, Post-hoc LSD and Pearson correlation.RESULTS: ANOVA analysis showed that the number of macrophages and epithelialization among groups was a significantly difference (p <0.05). Post hoc analysis demonstrated that the mean number of macrophage in AV-75 (6.50), AV-50 (5.13), and AV-25 (3.93) were significantly higher compared to that of Cntrl-G (2.93). The mean of epithelialization AV-75% (25.35), AV-50 (18.15), and AV-25 (15.38), were significantly (p <0.05) higher compared to that of Cntrl-G (9.30). The Pearson correlation test indicated that there is a strong positive correlation (0.88) between the number of macrophages and epithelialization (p <0.05).CONCLUSION: The topical administration of Aloe vera gel extract for five days increased the number of macrophages and epithelialization in sunburned UVB induced sun burn.

Abstract

Background: Healthcare associated infections (HAI) are infections acquired in health care centers such as hospital, clinic or other health care sites due to microorganisms. Research conducted by WHO showed 3-10% of all patients treated in hospitals were victims of HAI and 90% were mainly caused by bacteria, the rest by viruses, fungi or protozoa. Lemon peel aromatherapy is one of the essential oils from plants having antimicrobial activity and are beneficial to health reducing bacterial growth by inhibiting the function of cell membranes. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of lemon peel aromatheraphy againts airborne bacteria.Design and Method: This experimental study used post test only control groups design. The number of airborne bacteria colonies obtained from ICU room of Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital Semarang treated with lemon peel aromatherapy at the concentration of 100 % and the control group (-).The data were analyzed for normality using Shapiro Wilk followed by independent T-test Result: independent inT-test Independent showed a significant differences in the number of bacterial colonies between the treated groups receiving 100% concentration of lemon peel aromatherapy and control group (-) (p < 0.045).Conclusion: Aromatherapy extracts of lemon peel has effect on reducing the number of airborne bacteria in the ICU of Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital Semarang (Sains Medika, 4(1):71-77).

Abstract

Background: Recently, nosocomial infection (hospital- acquired infections) is estimated to affects more than 1.4 million of in patients in all over the world. Stethoscope is one source of nosocomial infection caused by the continuous contact from one patient to another. 70% alcohol and 0.5% chlorine can be used for disinfection. The purpose of the research is to find out the difference in the effectiveness of 70% alcohol and 0.5% chlorine to reduce the amount of germ on the stethoscope’s membrane.Design and Methods: This was an experimental research with the Post Test Only Control Group Design using 18 stethoscopes divided into 3 groups randomly. Group A was the control group (aquabidest), group B were treated with 70% alcohol treatment, and group C was treated with 0.5% chlorine. The research samples were the stethoscopes used to treat patient in Baitul Izah ward of Islamic Hospital of Sultan Agung Semarang. The data on the germ amount was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: There was a significant difference between aquabidest group and 70% alcohol group (p<0.05) and between aquabidest control group and chlorine group(p>0.05), nevertheless, there was no significant difference between the 70% alcohol group and 0.5% chlorine group ( 0.652). Conclusion: There was no difference in the effectiveness between 70% alcohol and 0.5% chlorine to reduce the number of germ on the stethoscope’s membrane (Sains Medika, 3(1):63-68).

Abstract

In the world of education, multimedia is used as an effective, attractive, efficient, and easy-to-use learning media in terms of learning assessment. Currently, the method of learning English at YPK Karya High School is still face-to-face and textbooks, the difficulty of students cannot listen to the speech and vocabulary sentences conveyed by the teacher and cannot write the vocabulary sentences correctly, therefore researchers make alternative English learning with multimedia, as an easy and interactive learning solution. The model used is ADDIE, and there are 5 stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects in this study were 1 principal, 2 teachers, 3 students. The methods used to collect data were interviews and observations. After obtaining the results of the analysis, the researcher designs the device requirements and multimedia design with the aim of providing a complete picture of the application. The design was performed using the Flash Professional CS5 application, an application specifically designed to create animation, and Photoshop 7.0 for image creation. Finally, the application for failures, system errors, and application maintenance. The results of the research on interactive learning English with multimedia are very helpful for students of SMA YPK Karya Tangerang because it is simpler and easier to repeat.
