Abstract

This research aims to reveal the actantial scheme and actantial roles of the major characters in the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) TV series. Using the actantial model theory developed by A. J. Greimas and applying a structuralist approach, the researchers analyze the characters’ actions. Furthermore, the researchers use qualitative methods to collect and analyze relevant data. Based on the results of the analysis, the researchers identify three schemes, which are considered complete as they contain all the key elements: a subject, object, sender, receiver, helper, and opponent. The researchers also provide an analysis of the characters’ characterization to reveal their actantial roles in each scheme. The types of characterization that appear the most are characterization through dialogue between characters and the external actions of characters.

Abstract

This study looks at how Greimas' actantial model, ecocriticism, and interpretive research come together to analyze indigenous stories from Southeast Asia in the context of the Anthropocene. While previous applications of the actantial model have focused on heroism, obedience, and resistance in Indonesian folklore, they have not engaged directly with ecocritical perspectives. This research seeks to bridge this gap using interpretive research guided by Ricoeur's hermeneutics. This study explores how indigenous myths construct non-human agency, positioning nature as an active participant rather than a submissive site. The actantial model is applied to narratives such as The Origin of Paddy, The Myth of Batoq Ayau, and The Legend of Hudoq Kawit, and an academic article, Circular Commoning of Dayak Bahau, revealing how actants shape environmental discourse. Additionally, this study reinterprets transitivity, expanding its scope beyond conventional constraints to position environmental actants as central figures in narrative structures. Findings indicate that integrating Greimas' narratology with ecocriticism increases one's knowledge about human-environment interdependency, offering a fresh ecocritical perspective that challenges anthropocentric ideologies. By reframing narratives to reflect mutuality between human and non-human entities, this study contributes to sustainable ecological stewardship, reinforcing the ethical responsibility essential for environmental resilience in the Anthropocene.

The data were generated from the speech, action, and thoughts of the characters portrayed in the film. The researcher revealed that the stages of prejudice action in this film are committed by white people and experienced by the Indian People. In conclusion, the four stages of prejudice experienced by the characters were anti-locution, discrimination, physical attack, and extermination. Abstract

Prejudice is a thought or assumption that is not necessarily true of a person or group based on their membership background. There are some hostile actions in prejudice, namely: (1) Antilocution, (2) Avoidance, (3) Discrimination, (4) Physical Attack, and (5) Extermination. With Allport's theory of prejudice, the researcher analyzes a film called 12 Years a Slave. The film is analyzed more deeply to find subtitles and scene pieces that contain elements of hostile actions in prejudice. To get the elements of prejudice in the film, the writer uses character theory and characterization to find elements of prejudice that occur in the characters in the film.  This study used a qualitative method because it requires a deep understanding of a phenomenon that occurs.  In the results of this study, the researcher found that there are four types of acts of prejudice, namely: (1) Antilocution, (2) Discrimination, (3) Physical Attack, and (4) Extermination. The most frequently used act of prejudice in this film is a physical attack. Based on the research in this study, the physical attacks in the film occurred because of the lack of self-control of white people over African Americans. More deeply, another reason is because of the mode of justification for the violence that white people against African Americans through the Bible. Lastly, because of the legalization of the sale and purchase of slaves, there was a sense of ownership that allowed white people to do anything to their slaves.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how ecological crises are categorized and interpreted through the element of setting in the documentary Eating Our Way to Extinction (2021). The film is selected as the object of study because it emphasizes the urgency of environmental destruction driven by the global food system, particularly practices of animal agriculture that have wide-ranging impacts. This research applies Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism within a qualitative descriptive method, employing categories such as pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, animals, and the earth as analytical indicators. Through this framework, the analysis explores how ecological issues are represented not only as scientific facts but also as cultural narratives that shape audience perception. The findings reveal that ecological phenomena including deforestation, biodiversity loss, overfishing, water and air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change are interpreted through story, narrative, atmospheric, temporal, and symbolic settings that structure the film’s message. These results demonstrate that setting is not merely a background but a central device that conveys the interconnectedness between human activity and ecological damage, thereby strengthening the persuasive force of the documentary. The study highlights how the use of setting contributes significantly to the film’s ecological discourse and offers a valuable perspective for ecocritical studies of visual media.
