Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the impact of capitalist society on Arthur’s character development as seen in Joker film by using Karl Marx’s idea about marxism and characterization in film theory by Boggs and Petrie. Further, the research method used in this study was qualitative research with a marxism approach. The researcher also designed this research as a film study by using Mikos’s data analysis in film theory to conduct research. In this film, the researcher finds two social conditions that appeared as common features in capitalist society. The two aspects of capitalist society in the film are class distinction and human exploitation. The class distinctions in this film are divided into the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. In this case, only Arthur’s character in this film is shown to face many exploitations due to different classes. As a result, these social conditions in capitalist society influenced Arthur Fleck as the main character. As a dynamic character, it is shown how Arthur developed from a patient, caring, and kind-hearted person into an impulsive, reckless, and psychopathic person. These character developments are portrayed by Arthur’s external actions dialogues, and appearance.

Abstract

This research investigates the system of visual imagery in Taylor Swift's 31-track album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.” It aims to analyze how Swift utilizes visual imagery and allusions not as mere decoration but as a functional system to elevate personal narratives of heartbreak and fame into archetypal explorations of suffering and survival. Employing a qualitative method with a semiotic approach, the study conducts a close reading of the album’s lyrical content. It also examines the motifs of performance and spectacle, which expose the painful dissonance between a public persona and a private self; the theme of subverted domesticity, where traditional images of home and love are corrupted; the feeling of cosmic alienation; and finally, the self-referential meta-narrative of creation, which tracks the process of transforming pain into art. The findings reveal that the visual imagery creates a claustrophobic emotional world, framing personal pain within universal mythological and literary contexts to legitimize it. This research concludes that Swift uses this visual lexicon to transform personal agony into a shared, survivable artifact, thereby positioning the artist as a healer and affirming the significance of popular song lyrics as a rich text for academic inquiry.

Abstract

Environmental crises are increasingly mediated through global media platforms, shaping public perception and ecological awareness. National Geographic, as a prominent environmental outlet, plays a key role in constructing narratives around ecological issues. However, the linguistic strategies it employs—particularly evaluative language—remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the evaluation of LA Wildfire in National Geographic Magazine through an ecolinguistic framework. The study is designed as qualitative research with a content analysis approach, which analyzed four articles discussing LA Wildfire 2025 in the National Geographic Magazine in the Environmental Section. The analysis focuses on appraisal patterns which cover three aspects: attitude, engagement, and graduation where each aspects has their sub categories which makes this analysis detailed.  The findings reveal a dominant use of appreciation and judgment to evoke urgency and moral responsibility, while affect is comparatively minimized. Salience patterns foreground scientific authority and global impact, often marginalizing local ecological voices. Metaphors such as “tipping point” and “planetary fever” reinforce crisis framing but risk oversimplifying complex ecological dynamics. This study contributes to ecolinguistics by demonstrating how evaluative language in environmental media can both amplify ecological concern and obscure systemic causes, highlighting the need for more reflexive and inclusive environmental storytelling.
