Abstract

This research investigates transformative learning theory using the biographical film The Ron Clark Story, which depicts an innovative teacher's experiences in an inner-city school. Jack Mezirow defines transformative learning theory as using jarring situations and critical reflection to catalyze dramatic perspective shifts. The study seeks to bridge the gap between academic concepts and their practical applications in educational contexts. The film was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis method, which included systematic data collecting and triangulation of primary and secondary sources. The findings highlight important unsettling challenges confronting Ron Clark, such as culture differences and student resistance, prompting critical reflection and transformative learning. Clark changes his teaching skills through reflective practices, incorporating culturally relevant methods such as rap in the classroom and making personal sacrifices to help his kids. This strategy creates a transformed classroom atmosphere, improving both teaching methods and student outcomes. The study indicates that The Ron Clark Story exemplifies the transforming impact of critical reflection in education. It emphasizes the value of resilience and adaptability in teaching and offers practical advice for educators looking to apply transformative learning practices. This study adds to the discussion about transformative learning by providing a tangible example of theoretical principles put into practice, with the goal of informing professional development programs and improving educational results.

Abstract

Technological advancements in the Society 5.0 era have driven the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into various aspects of education, including creative writing learning. AI functions as a tool to assist students in generating ideas, structuring their writing, and receiving adaptive feedback. However, the implementation of AI in writing education still faces several challenges, such as the potential for grammatical inaccuracies, limited emotional depth, and a tendency to generate overly simplistic texts. This study aims to review various AI-based learning approaches and improve their effectiveness in developing the creative writing skills of students. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method and using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines was employed by analyzing previous studies related to the integration of AI in creative writing education. The findings of this study indicate that the ChatGPT platform is widely utilized in the development of creative writing, particularly short stories.  ChatGPT has proven effective in enhancing the writing skills of students by facilitating idea generation and supporting information exploration. Moreover, AI proves most effective when used as a collaborative tool within pedagogically grounded models, rather than as a replacement for human creativity. This study contributes to the enhancement of student creative writing skills by mapping current AI developments, identifying the most effective instructional models, and providing evidence-based recommendations for integrating AI to improve student performance in creative writing education.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The integration of TikTok as a tool in English language learning has rapidly expanded due to its engaging, short-form video format and the platform’s ability to foster creativity, student participation, and peer interaction. Despite this growth, limited scholarly attention has been paid to the digital ethical challenges posed by TikTok’s use in educational settings, particularly those related to data privacy, algorithmic bias, content moderation, and disinformation. Methodology: This research employs a systematic literature review approach, synthesizing findings from relevant studies on TikTok in education, with emphasis on English language instruction. The selection process follows PRISMA guidelines to ensure comprehensive and unbiased coverage of relevant literature. Main Findings: Findings indicate that TikTok significantly enhances learners’ speaking, listening, and digital communication skills while encouraging collaborative and socially interactive learning environments. However, ethical issues—such as exposure to inappropriate content, misinformation, lack of algorithm transparency, and student data vulnerabilities—emerge as critical concerns that require careful pedagogical management. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study presents a novel conceptual framework for integrating TikTok into English language education ethically and responsibly, positioning it at the intersection of digital pedagogy and media ethics. It advocates for the inclusion of digital literacy and ethics training within the curriculum to equip educators and students to engage with social media tools in a more informed and secure manner.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of evaluation practices in developing students' productive skills in Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), particularly in speaking and writing. Using a mixed methods approach, data were collected through speaking and writing tests, questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations. The findings show that consistent evaluation frequency and relevant learning contexts significantly influence students’ perceptions and the development of their productive skills. Performance-based evaluations—such as monologues, dialogues, and writing tasks grounded in real-life situations—were found to be the most effective and meaningful. However, feedback delivery remains a major weakness, as many students felt that the feedback they received was too vague and not helpful enough for improving their skills. Therefore, there is a need to develop an evaluation system that is not only regular and contextual but also provides practical and targeted feedback. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for designing more effective BIPA evaluation strategies, focusing on strengthening speaking and writing skills, and supporting students in becoming active users of the Indonesian language in their daily lives.

Abstract

In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, communicative competence remains a crucial goal for higher education students. However, the roles of learning strategies—particularly metacognitive and socio-affective strategies in shaping communicative competence are still underexplored. This study aims to examine the predictive relationship between students’ use of metacognitive and socio-affective strategies and their overall communicative competence. Employing a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis, data were collected from 120 EFL university students using standardized questionnaires. The findings revealed that socio-affective strategies significantly predicted students’ communicative competence, while metacognitive strategies did not demonstrate a significant effect. The results suggest that emotional regulation, interpersonal interaction, and social support are essential components in enhancing students’ ability to communicate effectively in English. This research contributes to applied linguistics and EFL pedagogy by emphasizing the importance of socio-affective dimensions in language learning and advocating for strategy-based instruction in classrooms. In terms of practical contribution, the study offers insights for language educators and curriculum developers to design more holistic and student-centered teaching strategies that promote not only linguistic knowledge but also emotional engagement and communicative confidence among students.
