Abstract

Background: Associations of dietary diversity score (DDS), obesity and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with glucose metabolism have been reported. Furthermore, DDS may not be associated with healthy weight. However, studies on these topics are limited in general Indonesia population. Methods: A total of 3,825 Indonesia Family Life Survey 2014/2015 participants aged 20-59 years old were included in this study. DDS was measured qualitatively in five food groups: carbohydrates, proteins, dairy products, vegetables, and fruits. Obesity was defined by Body Mass Index (BMI) classification for Indonesians. Blood analyses were performed in dried blood spot specimens. hs-CRP were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and HbA1c was analyzed using Bio-Rad D10. Results: High DDS group had higher HbA1c than low DDS group (p = 0.030). Furthermore, medium and high DDS group had higher BMI than low DDS group (p = 0.003 and < 0.001). Obese group had higher HbA1c than nonobese group (p < 0.001). hs-CRP was correlated with HbA1c (r = 0.1194; p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that DDS, obesity and hs-CRP were associated with HbA1c (p = 0.030, p < 0.001 and < 0.001). Conclusions: Present study confirmed that obesity and hs-CRP are associated with HbA1c. DDS is positively associated with HbA1c and BMI. Promoting dietary diversity requires careful consideration. Moreover, further studies are warranted.

Transferrin P570s. Gene Polymorphism Against Hemoglobin (Hb) Levels in Adolescent Girls Islamic Boarding Schools In YogyakartaBackground: Anemia in adolescent girls is one of the nutrients problem. Transferin P570S gene polymorphism has an effect on glycosylated transferin so it can accelerate the degradation transferin. This can cause a decrease in transferrin function and interfere Fe homeostasis. The lack of Fe intake is one cause of the anemia. Objectives: To investigate correlation P570S transferrin gene polymorphisms with iron status as risk factor for iron deficiency anemia in adolescent girls. Methods: Desain of this study was case control. Eighty one adolescent girls living in the boarding school were included in this study. Blood samples used for biochemical examination of the blood and to detect the presence of P570S transferin polymorphism. Genotype frequencies between groups were analyzed using Chi square test and calculated the Odds Ratio (OR). Comparison of the mean rate of hemoglobin between genotype groups were analyzed statistically using One-way ANOVA test. Results: Transferin P570S polymorphism frequency in anemic girls with the CC was 68.4%, CT was 26.3%, TT was 5.3%, C allele frequency= 81.6% and T allele= 18.4%. The odds ratio (OR) P570S transferrin gene polymorphisms for polymorphic genotypes of 0.783 and for the T allele is 0.991. On the subject of anemia with polymorphic genotypes have hemoglobin levels 11.45 while wild type 11.6 (p= 0.000). On the subject of IDA with polymophic genotypes have hemoglobin levels 11.45 while wild type genotype 11.6 (p= 0.190). Conclusion: Genotype frequencies P570S transferring gene polymorphism in adolescent girls at the boarding school who suffer anemia of 31.6% and 35.7% of IDA. The mean hemoglobin levels in subjects with polymorphic genotype lower than the wild type.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are not only caused by genetic factors, but it can also be due to behavioral factors, such as low physical activity, unhealthy diet, and lack of knowledge on nutrition and healthy lifestyle. An integrated health post (“pos pembinaan terpadu” abbreviated as posbindu) is a community-based program in Indonesia which aims to reduce the incidence of NCDs by promoting a healthy lifestyle and conducting monthly health screening. However, since the recruitment of the post’s cadres is voluntary, most of them do not have formal education on health and may not be familiar with health screening tools. Thus, improving their knowledge and skills on this subject is critical. Methods: The Kelas MASK project aimed to increase the knowledge and skills of posbindu cadres, especially on the risk, prevention, and basic screening tools for NCDs. The projects consisted of lecture, demonstrations, dan practices. The knowledge and skills on anthropometric measurements, blood pressure and simple biochemical analysis were evaluated based on the score obtained from the pre- and post- tests. Results: The Kelas MASK project increased the cadres’ knowledge, shown by the increase of the average post-test score compared to the pre-test score (increased by 4.03, p-value = 0.0000).Conclusion: All in all, the Kelas MASK project significantly increased the knowledge and skills of posbindu cadres on the prevention of NCDs.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is number one killer disease in the world. The most common etiology is atherosclerosis. LDL and HDL-cholesterol are often associated with atherosclerosis which are affected by diet. Quercetin and curcumin considered have influenced to LDL and HDL. They are antioxidant that protect against LDL oxidation and raised HDL-cholesterol. In this study, we invest about comparison effect of prevention in LDL and HDL level change, after giving quercetin and curcumin. 20 males Rattus novergicus rats in 200-300 grams divided into 4 groups. Group B, C, D were given high-fat diet for 4 weeks, while group A (negative control) was given standard woof. Group B was positive control and no treatment, C was given quercetin, D was given curcumin. The treatment and giving high-fat diet was done simultaneously to detect prevention effect. HDL and LDL-cholesterol evaluated two times, pre and post-treatment. Result showed the increase prevention level of LDL-cholesterol and decrease prevention level of HDL-cholesterol in group C and D significantly. The best prevention effect is quercetin, p=0.000. Furthermore, we showed there was no significant correlation between DLDL and DHDL-cholesterol level. In conclusion, quercetin and curcumin have a good effect in preventing hypercholesterolemia, however quercetin have better effect than curcumin.
