Abstract

Mobility can act as a stepping stone to get out of poverty. This research examines whether the effect of poverty encouraging or inhibiting the mobility of workers across sectors. By using data from the 2018 Indonesia National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) that cover 8,869 respondents, this study applies multinomial regression models to analyse inter-sector mobility types among labors in Indonesia. The results show that low-income workers in the industrial and service sectors tend to have a 4.8% and 6.3% greater probability of transferring to the agricultural sector. However, agricultural workers that suffer from poverty choose to survive in the same sector due to the high cost of inter-sector mobility. Other findings show that older age and higher education level decreased the propensity to move across sectors. In the efforts to alleviate poverty, the role of the government is expected to be seen in two ways. Firstly, by facilitating workers to move into productive sectors, i.e. industrial and service sectors, and secondly, by increasing the productivity of the agricultural sector.

Abstract

The Indonesian economy has been one of the promising economies, with an average annual economic growth of about 5% in the last decade. With income per capita US$ 4050 as of 2019, Indonesia is now moving to attain upper-middle-income country status. Indonesia escaped from the lower-middle-income trap that the country has faced since 1985 by improving its human capital through increased attention to education and reduction in poverty. Alongside a significant poverty reduction, the middle class or middle-income population has been significantly growing. According to the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS), the middle-class household grew from only 9% in 1993 to more than 20% in 2019. The middle class also works as an engine for growth, supporting nearly half of total national consumption. They are more likely of having better human capital, work as white-collar workers, and mostly living in urban areas. Due to the greater education and skills most of those in the middle class, have greater access to working in the formal sector jobs, and some are increasingly running productive business or entrepreneur which drives growth and creating jobs for others (World Bank, 2019).

Abstract

Forced migration has a long-lasting impact on future generations. This study involves the application of logistic regression with marginal effect on data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) to find out the impact of forced migration on the welfare of parent and child households. The study findings show that forced migration can reduce the likelihood of a parent household becoming poor by 7.3%. For children who follow their parents migrating, the probability of becoming poor is also decreased by 9.82%. A decrease in household consumption of education and health, as well as the lack of asset ownership, can reduce human capital components. This finding shows the importance of supporting investment in human capital and physical capital for households experiencing forced migration to avoid intergenerational transmission of poverty.

Abstract

This study will try to see the impact of the dominance of the informal sector in West Nusa Tenggara Province which reaches 73.89% of the workforce when compared to the formal sector which is only 26.11%. While the HDI level of this province is 29th out of 34 provinces throughout Indonesia, the main reason is that the majority of the population who enter the informal sector have a low level of education and do not even go to school. It is very important to analyze the factors that influence the poverty of actors in the informal sector, especially in the West Nusa Tenggara Province, and to find out what variables affect poverty in the informal sector. Based on the results of research using Susenas data in 2021, it was found that the variables of education, marital status, number of family members, informal activities, use of technology, social security, access to capital, and migration status had a significant effect on poverty in the informal sector, only the domicile location variable did not significantly effect on poverty in the informal sector at West Nusa Tenggara Province. Keywords: Poverty, Informal Sector, Education, Technology, Gender

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has decreased the number of entrepreneurs assisted by permanent workers in Indonesia. Using SAKERNAS Data of August 2019 and 2020, this study uses multinomial logistic regression to estimate the impact of digital technology in the entrepreneurial transition during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results show that digital technology and the internet have a negative and significant effect on the transition of formal entrepreneurship in Indonesia. The use of digital technology and the internet will prevent formal entrepreneurs from transitioning into informal entrepreneurs or leaving entrepreneurship. Increasing digital technology usage and the internet for promotional and sales purposes will enable entrepreneurs to survive amid a pandemic. In addition, building information technology infrastructure such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS), especially in rural areas, is necessary to increase internet coverage and encourage business scale-up in rural areas.

Unemployment is an interesting topic to discuss because it is an endless issue, and several factors influencing unemployment can be very complex. Unemployment is a problem that is always present and never-ending for debate. This study aims to examine the effect of Minimum Wage and Education Index on Unemployment in the Regencies and Cities of East Java during the research period of 2010-2022. The data used in this study are secondary data of a panel type, consisting of 13 years of time series data from 2010 to 2022, and cross-sectional data of 38 Regencies/Cities in East Java sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS). The data is quantitative and processed using multiple linear regression analysis. The study found that the minimum wage (X1) variable has a significant positive impact on unemployment, the education index (X2) variable has a significant positive impact on unemployment (Y), and both the minimum wage (X1) and education index (X2) variables together have an impact on unemployment (Y) in the Regencies and Cities of East Java.

Abstract

The Municipal Minimum Wage Policy (UMK) aims to improve the welfare of workers/laborers and avoid the poverty trap. However, based on the theory of the “UMK” policy, it has a negative impact, it can increase unemployment and poverty. This study analyzes the influence of the UMK on TPT and poverty in West Java by considering the supporting variables, namely population, number of industries, investment. The type of data used is secondary which tested by using panel data regression analysis and processed with Stata 14.2. The results of the analysis show that the UMK has a positive effect on TPT, but the population, number of industries and investment have no effect on TPT. Then, the UMK has a negative effect on poverty, population has a positive effect on poverty, and the number of industries has a negative effect on poverty, while investment has no effect on poverty in West Java in 2017 – 2021.
