Abstract

This article presents a part of a study conducted to develop teaching material for Grammar 1 Course on Multimedia based teaching material. The results described here are the students’ problems and needs in Grammar course. It was a descriptive study to see students’ needs on multimedia used in Grammar 1 teaching material. The data were taken from the questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to the students who have taken Grammar 1 course. The result of the research showed that 1) there is a gap between the objective of Grammar 1 course and the students’ achievement in the class, 2) students get the problems in understanding Grammar 1 due to inappropriate teaching materials used in teaching and learning process, and 3) the students need a multimedia based teaching materials to improve their understanding and achievement in Grammar 1 course.

Abstract

The purpose of this action research project was to help students become self-directed learners by determining what metacognitive strategies would be the most effective for a student’s specific learning styles. Students were surveyed using the Perceptual Modality Preference Survey to determine their dominant learning styles. Students were then introduced to a new metacognitive strategy each week and asked to apply the strategy to their daily learning processes. Students were then asked to reflect on which metacognitive strategies best fit their learning styles. The results were then tallied to determine which strategies were preferred within the seven learning style groups

Abstract

This article presents a part of a study conducted to develop teaching material for Essay Writing Course on Process Genre-Based Approach. The result described here is the students' problems and needs in rvriting an essay text. It r.vas a descriptive study to see students' problems and needs in writing an essay text. The data were taken from the questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to the students rvho have taken Essay Writing Course. It was found that the problems were in pre-writing activities; the level was high, whilst writing activities; the level was average, post-writing activities; the level was high, and in aspect of grammar and mechanics; the level was high. In addition, students'need in rvriting text was high, It was represented from the input, kinds oftexts, kinds oftopics, and kinds ofexercises.

Abstract

This paper discusses the results of research on empirical descriptions relating to three points in the Reading (Reading) course in the English Department of Padang State University. The three things studied consisted of (1) the personality of the lecturer in the teaching and learning process of the Reading program based on the student's point of view; (2) student learning motivation in the process of reading learning; and (3) the relationship between lecturer personality and student motivation in the process of reading learning. This research uses a descriptive method. The study population was all students who had studied four types of reading (Reading) courses at the UNP Padang English Department in 2015. The courses were Reading I, Reading II, Reading III, and Advanced Reading. This study uses total sampling. There are three findings from this study. First, the personality of the lecturer in the teaching and learning process of Reading courses based on the students' point of view is in a good category. Second, the motivation of students in the learning process of Reading subjects is also included in the good category. Finally, this study shows that there is no strong relationship between lecturer personality and student motivation in the learning process of reading courses in the UNP Padang English Department.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk mengadakan pelatihan pembuatan penilaian otentik bagi guru-guru Bahasa Inggris SMP di kota Padang. Pelatihan ini diadakan di Forum MGMP (Majelis Guru Mata Pelajaran) yang melibatkan tiga orang dosen Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, Universitas Negeri Padang. Peserta diperkenalkan dengan berbagai bentuk penilaian otentik dan dilatih untuk membuat soal-soal ataupun tugas yang bersifat otentik yang dilakukan dengan latihan terbimbing dan mandiri. Pelatihan ini dilanjutkan melalui email dan aplikasi whats app dimana peserta pelatihan yang mewakili beberapa sekolah mengirimkan soal-soal yang dibuat berdasarkan konsep penilaian otentik. Soal tersebut kemudian dikoreksi dan diberikan masukan dan dikirimkan kembali kepada mereka supaya mereka dapat memperbaiki dan menggunakannya untuk menilai capaian pembelajaran siswa. Dari soal-soal yang dibuat oleh guru pada tahap awal latihan terbimbing masih banyak yang membuat secara tradisional atau belum menerapkan prinsip penilaian otentik. Namun pada tahap berikutnya sudah terlihat pemahaman sebagian guru-guru tersebut.

Abstract

Constructing information question with correct grammar is an ability that should be owned by the students. The aim of this research is to find out the research question about how the students’ ability in constructing information question is. This is a descriptive research. The data were collected from twenty-eight students of eighth grade of SMP 30 Padang that were chosen randomly. This research used test as the instrument that consist of twelve question tests that represent question word what, where, who, why, when, and how. Analysis data based on indicators of information question; question word, auxiliary verb, subject, main verb, and sentence complement. From the result of this study, it was gained that students’ abilities were very good in determining question word, not very good in determining auxiliary verb, good in determining subject, not good in determining verb, and average in determining complement. It can be concluded that students have good ability in determining question word, subject, and complement in constructing information question, while students still have low ability in determining auxiliary verb and verb in constructing information question.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of using digital sequence pictures on students’ ability in writing an explanation text. This research design was quasi-experimental research and had two classes which were the control class and the experiment class. The population of this research was the second-year students at SMA N 1 Lengayang and the sample was decided by using cluster random sampling which was getting two classes. XI.IPA 1 was the experiment class and XI.IPA 2 was the control class. The writing test was administrated as the instrument of this research which was writing an explanation text. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed by the paired sample t-test. The result of paired sample t-test in the research stated that the value of sign 2-tailed is 0.000 which means that the value of the sign. 2-tailed lower than 0.05 so that the alternative hypothesis or the first hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the results of the data showed that there was a statistically significant improvement in the explanation text which is written by the students after they were taught through the digital sequence pictures. The findings suggest that the digital sequence pictures enable students to improve their ability in writing an explanation text.

Abstract

Normalization has been carried out as a new step in reducing Covid-19 cases. Researchers want to see students' reading comprehension in New Normal situations. This study aims to analyze students' understanding in reading comprehension texts at SMAN 10 Padang. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. The subject of this research is the tenth grade of SMAN 10 Padang while the object of this research is students' understanding in reading comprehension texts. The author uses a simple random sampling technique to take a sample, there are 53 students as a sample of this study. To collect data, the author uses tests and questionnaires. The test was conducted to determine students' understanding in reading comprehension texts and a questionnaire was used to determine the factors that influence students' understanding in reading comprehension texts. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that the average result of students' understanding in reading comprehension texts was 60.90. The result of data analysis is that their understanding of reading comprehension is categorized into an average level. Meanwhile, the percentage result of the questionnaire given about reading strategies is 66.4% in the strong category. The writer also found that there are factors that influence students' understanding in reading comprehension texts, namely bottom-up reading strategies, top-down reading strategies and student grades.

Abstract

This article deals with students’ ability in paraphrasinga paragraphat The English Department Universitas NegeriPadang.This descriptive quantitative research aimed to analyze students' ability in paraphrasing a paragraph text based on Leonhard's paraphrasing rubric (2002) and to identify problems in students' paraphrasing based on the theory of Kennedy & Smith (1986). The sample of this research was 27 (twenty-seven) students of the K4 class at the English Language Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Padang, for the 2020 academic year. The data was collected using a paraphrasing test as the instrument in which they paraphrased a paragraph of text. The finding showed that the average score in the paraphrasing test was 51,9, categorized as unsatisfactory. The researcher also concluded the number of problems in students' paraphrasing a paragraph was 55. In general, 40% of students' paraphrases were classified as substituting inappropriate synonyms. 29% of students' paraphrases were classified as leaving out important information. 20% of students' paraphrases were classified as including too much of the original, 11% of students' paraphrases were classified as misreading the original, and there was no problem of adding opinion summarizing rather than paraphrasing found in students' paraphrases. Studying these two topics is very useful for understanding how students' ability to paraphrase a paragraph can be optimally increased.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out (1) the types of Illocutionary acts, (2) the most dominant paradigmatic cases and (3) the specific intention of the speakers in Advanced English Conversation video podcasts using the theory proposed by Searle in Huang (2007). This research used the descriptive method. The data of this research were 209 of the selected utterances of Jack and Kate, which potentially performed the types of Illocutionary acts and their paradigmatic cases taken from To Fluency’s YouTube channel as the data source. The first finding showed that all types of Illocutionary acts were performed in the video podcasts. They were representative (98 datum), declarative (8 datum), commissive (8 datum), directive (18 datum), and expressive (77 datum). It can be seen that the most dominant type of Illocutionary acts was representative. Furthermore, the second finding showed that the most dominant paradigmatic case was describing. It was the paradigmatic case of the representative. The frequency of describing in the video podcast about food was 28 times and 19 times in the podcast about jobs. In other words, the speakers specifically intended to describe something they are sure of in the context of food and jobs.
