Abstract

Nurses work at the frontline with high intensity in patient care, especially handling the COVID-19. Work pressure and stress faced by nurses can increase burnout (BO) as a syndrome of emotional exhaustion that occurs over a long period of time. One of the negative impact of burnout is the decrease in work engagement (WE). The presence of perceived organizational support (POS) has been shown to be correlated with low BO, and in turn, is correlated with high level of WE. This study aims to examine the contribution of BO to WE moderated by POS for nurses at the Hospital Prof R.D. Kandou in North Sulawesi as a referral COVID-19 hospital. This study involved 111 nurses from isolation room and emergency room using the convenience sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using the moderation analysis with the help of JASP software. From the result, indicate that BO significantly affect WE which give a 26.9% contribution. POS adds contribution when together with BO its affects WE by 27.8%, to 54.7%. The results of the study show that POS significantly moderates the effect of BO on WE.Keywords: burnout; COVID-19; nurses; perceived organizational support; work engagement

Abstract

Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) has a significant impact on people’s lives. Few studies have been conducted on young parents with ACE in Indonesia, of which indicated that parenting stress is more common in young parents with ACE.The gap between resources, expectations, and negative mental judgment in response to differences lead to parental stress. The purpose of this research is to explore parenting experiences among young adults with ACE, specifically understanding how they cope with stress. This qualitative study adopted a snowball sampling (Yin, 2016) to identify six participants who are currently a parent with ACE. This research employed a phenomenological qualitative design (Yin, 2016). In-depth interviews are the primary data collection and data was analysed with a thematic analysis. The result indicated that ACE has a significant influence on current parenting stress experiences. Religiosity was found to have an essential role in coping with parenting stress. Cultural standard is a significant characteristic of a nation’s culture, impacting an individual’s thought patterns, emotions, and behavior. Religiosity is an appreciation of a specific religion that helps overcome parenting stress. The ability to overcome this situation, find personal growth, and appreciate life and spiritual changes is called post-traumatic growth.

Abstract

Turning red film shows us that there is regeneration in parenting style. This parenting style focuses on the successful event in life and achievement but does not see the emotional side of the child. The dynamics of family communication, as seen in the Turning Red film, were seen to be something important in parenting. The issue in family communication will create tension and reduce family harmony. Le Praire mentions that there are two types of family communication, which are nurturing and controlling. Communication is full of contrary expressions and tension between one another, which we call relational dialectical tension. With the family communication dynamics in the film Turning Red, the researcher tries to find the equilibrium in family communication. The researcher used Tzvetan Todorov's narrative analysis. Todorov divides the analysis into five stages, starting from equilibrium until there is a new equilibrium. This research shows that the dialectical tension colouring the films is stability vs change and integration vs autonomy. Parents' acceptance of their children in every aspect, including their developmental stage and emotional needs, will build a higher attachment.

Abstract

The current workforce in organizations is heavily dominated by millennials, who have high turnover tendencies. Several studies have revealed a strong link between how urban millennials perceive their quality of work-life and their company loyalty. Furthermore, the level of organizational commitment (OC) has been consistently associated with employee turnover intentions (TI). Based on previous studies, OC serves as a mediating variable for the influence of quality of work-life (QWL) on TI. This study applies three online questionnaires—the QWL Evaluation Scale, the OC Questionnaire, and the Intention to Leave Scale. A convenience sampling technique is applied to sample 280 millennial employees (born from 1983 to 1998) in Jakarta. The data were analyzed with a regression-based mediation analysis method using PROCESS macro in SPSS. Our results reveal that the indirect effect of QWL on TI via affective and normative commitment is significant. It is also found that the mediating role of these two OC dimensions is partial. We recommend that retention strategies should be implemented to improve millennials’ OC.

Abstract

Background: The influence of technology and media on teachers’ beliefs and self-concepts is substantial. The social identity theory explains how an individual’s perception of themselves as a group member influences their social identity. Purpose: This study aims to examine the analysis of vernacular discourse in public service announcements (PSA) from two perspectives: cultural syncretism and pastiche. Methods: The methodology utilized in this study is vernacular discourse analysis with a critical paradigm-based qualitative approach. The objects of this study were two PSA videos of the Ministry of Education (MOE) Singapore. Results: The vernacular discourse analysis reveals that cultural and social contexts influence teachers’ rhetoric, with sociocultural and linguistic conditions reinforcing educational hegemony in the PSA videos of Singapore. Conclusion: MOE’s PSA videos shape teachers’ social identity by employing persuasive strategies to promote teachers’ roles and self-concepts based on the belief that student and societal success begins with the teacher. Implications: Theoretically, this study implies that media can shape teachers’ social identities. The practical implications of this study are using PSA videos to align the role and self-concept of Indonesian teachers, demonstrating how the noble but less prestigious teaching profession shapes the next generation. Additionally, media can be utilized to enhance the quality of education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Education is commonly perceived as the process of having systematic instruction from educators for better living quality, and sometimes, it means higher lifetime earnings. Teachers play an important role in educating the next generation. The Indonesian talk show “Kick Andy” and the news portal “Kumparan” released on Youtube, show a message on education. These programs narrate the story of an early-childhood-education teacher from a remote area in Nusa Tenggara Timur. Both programs illustrate a woman’s struggle to obtain an education opportunity and provide access to education among the children in her village. The data was collected with an interview method. Data were available on television and online media platform. This study employs a framework by Sara Mills’s critical discourse in a combination of the teacher’s professional development theory to rectify how mass media portrays a female teacher who lives in a marginal area. Based on the collected data in Ibusm State, on the one hand, this study finds that the media still depicts women as submissive and oppressed figures who should serve the family and country. On the other hand, it is found that women are empowered to rise from adversity, which is also reinforced by a strong teacher’s professional identity in a teacher’s self.

Visual media is a very popular communication media in society, with short films being particularly accessible and easily interpreted by viewers. This research aims to analyse a short film titled "Kos - Kosan", which address the issue of prejudice and stereotypes related to religious conflict, focusing on the subject-object position, author-reader positions depicted in the scenes shown. Using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis and a descriptive qualitative analysis method, this study seeks to describe the impact on women and explore the perspective and actions taken by viewers of the short film plot towards the object, women. This study found that the conflict that occurs is primarily due to misunderstandings in communication, where the subject directs the object toward an understanding that negative connotation. Similarly, viewers tend to perceive women in terms of immorality and promiscuity rather than discrimination and intolerance. One of the factors causing misunderstandings in communication between the actors of this short film is nonverbal communication, including facial expressions and body language, which often lead to misinterpretation.

Abstract

Gadis Kretek (Lit. Cigarette Girl) is a film series that narrates the tale of Lebas and Arum, who embark on a quest to uncover the truth about a woman named Dasiyah (Jeng Yah). The series features two distinct periods: in 1946, when Dasiyah and Soeraja met during the development of the cigarette industry, and in 2001 when Lebas and Arum's search for Dasiyah revealed her family's past. This study analyzes the discourse of gender roles and communication accommodation in the Gadis Kretek film series, specifically episodes 1 and 2, using modality discourse analysis. The research method employed is qualitative, with speech analyzed through modality using elements of gender role theory and communication accommodation. The analysis of gender roles and communication accommodation in the Gadis Kretek film series, episodes 1 and 2, was conducted using Theo Van Leeuwen's Multimodality Discourse Analysis (MDA) method. The results of multimodal analysis indicate that in societies with traditional gender role views, communication tends to diverge or accentuate differences between parties. In contrast, in modern societies with non-traditional views, communication tends to be more open, reducing existing differences.
