Abstract

Floodplain swamp are seasonally inundated aquatic ecosystems that play vital ecological roles as habitats, spawning grounds, and natural buffers supporting local fish diversity in Indonesia, particularly in South Sumatra. However, pressures from land conversion, environmental degradation, and overexploitation have caused a decline in biodiversity and now threaten the long-term sustainability of these ecosystems. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, guided by the PRISMA protocol, to explore the role of socio-ecological approaches in managing floodplain swamp for fish conservation. The analysis was conducted through thematic and bibliometric synthesis using VOSviewer software to identify research trends, thematic clusters, and existing knowledge gaps. The findings reveal that the success of fish conservation in floodplain swamp depends not only on ecological factors but also on social, cultural, economic, and institutional dimensions. Integrating local wisdom such as the Lubuk Larangan system and traditional fisheries regulations with modern scientific frameworks like Adaptive Collaborative Management enhances socio ecological resilience and conservation effectiveness. An adaptive and participatory socio ecological management model for floodplain swamp is therefore essential to ensure the sustainability of fish resources and the well-being of local communities. Abstract

Small-scale snakehead (Channa striata) farmers commonly rely on manual and periodic water quality monitoring, which often results in delayed responses to environmental fluctuations and high fry mortality rates. This community service program aimed to strengthen technological literacy and improve hatchery management practices through the implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based “Channa Sense” real-time monitoring system. The intervention adopted a structured three-phase approach consisting of pre-implementation assessment, participatory workshop and system installation, and post-implementation evaluation. The program involved 37 participants representing farmers, entrepreneurs, and community members, with baseline data collected from 30 small-scale farmers across Palembang, Indralaya, and Musi Banyuasin. Pre-intervention findings showed that 56.76% of participants were unaware of the technology and none had prior experience with digital monitoring systems. Following experiential learning activities, 64.86% of participants reported a moderate to full understanding of the system, and recognition of Channa Sense as a water quality monitoring device increased from 13.51% to 60.42%. At the partner hatchery (Kandang Om Bobby), real-time monitoring reduced fry mortality from approximately 40% to 5–10%, representing a survival improvement of 30–35%. The findings indicate that participatory and context-adapted IoT interventions can effectively bridge digital literacy gaps while generating measurable operational benefits in small-scale aquaculture. However, adoption intentions remained moderate due to cost and maintenance concerns. Continued mentoring, cost optimization, and cooperative-based implementation strategies are recommended to ensure long-term sustainability and broader community uptake

Abstract

The Sumatran featherback (Chitala hypselonotus, Bleeker 1852) is a high-value freshwater fish species in South Sumatra. The local name for this species is belida or belido. In its natural habitat, the population of this species has declined. The objective of this study was to evaluate the survival, growth, and feed efficiency of C. hypselonotus reared in net cages. This study was conducted from June to August of 2024 in Putak River, Putak Village, Gelumbang District, Muara Enim Regency. C. hypselonotus was reared in net cages (1x1x1 m) for 30 days and fed with live shrimp (Caridina sp.). The experimental method utilizes a comparative study approach. The present study compared two distinct treatments, each with a feeding rate of 3% and 5%, respectively. Each treatment was repeated three times. The data were tabulated with the assistance of the Microsoft Excel 2020 program and subsequently analyzed using the t-test. The results demonstrated that the survival rate of C. hypselonotus was 100% for both treatments. Growth in body weight and total length in the 5% treatment was superior to that of the 3% treatment; however, the t-test results were not significant (P < 0.05). The results of this study provide a starting point for future investigations.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the best immertion duration to increase growth rate of snakehead fish larva. The research was conducted in Fish Breeding unit Batanghari Sembilan Indralaya, Kabupaten Ogan Ilir. This research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with five treatments (0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours of immertion), with three replications. The parameters observed were growth, survival rate and water quality. The results of  this research show that the highest growth rate found in the 24 hours of treatment  with the average value of 0.17 g of weight and increase in length of 1.90 cm. The best survival contained in treatment of immersion for 36 hours with the average value of 71.67%.   Key words: snakehead larvae, thyroxine, growth, immertion
