Abstract

Jorong Parit Dalam Nagari Taeh Baruah, Payakumbuh District, Limapuluh Kota Regency is one of the villages that has various problems such as drought, high number of idle lands and remote access. The main crop planted during the rainy season is lowland rice, but most of the land becomes idle land during the dry season. In terms of fertilization, farmers in this location still use artificial fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) and in terms of pest and disease control they still use chemical pesticides. The solutions that can be offered are planting chili plants which are more resistant to drought, processing agricultural waste into compost as an alternative to reduce dependence on the use of chemical fertilizers, use of Trichoderma and vegetable pesticides as agents for controlling pests and diseases, and processing chili production to increase value. selling, competitiveness and community income. The purpose of this farmer group empowerment activity is to increase public knowledge about the use of Trichoderma which can increase the growth of chili plants, and can also be used as a biological agent to control pests and diseases that often attack chili plants when cultivated. The method used in this activity is socialization and counseling, structured training and direct practice in the field of Trichoderma's influence on the growth and production of chili plants. The results obtained from this activity are that the community can recognize that there are alternative controls that are more environmentally friendly than the use of synthetic pesticides. The public can also gain new understanding regarding the increased growth and yield of chili plants by utilizing the Trichoderma biological agent. So that in the end it can reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides obtained from outside. Therefore, the environment and the balance of the ecosystem in the Nagari Taeh Baruh area are maintained. The conclusion of this activity is that plant growth applied using Trichoderma spp is higher than plants that are not treated with Trichoderma spp (control). The use of Trichoderma spp is highly recommended because besides being easy to obtain, it also provides positive values for plant growth and is good for environmental technology around cultivated plants.

Abstract

The Tunas Harapan Women Farmers Group, Limau Manis Village, Pauh District, Padang City is one of the farmer groups that has various problems such as drought, high amount of unused land and arid land. The main crop planted during the rainy season is lowland rice, but most of the land becomes idle land during the dry season. Another problem that is often faced during the implementation of cultivation is the problem of soil quality, the lack of organic matter in the soil can also be the cause of degradation which has an impact on decreasing the productivity of rice plants. In terms of fertilization, farmers in this location still use artificial fertilizers (chemical fertilizers), where the use of chemical fertilizers can also reduce the quality of agricultural food so that it is not safe for consumption. The purpose of this activity is to increase public knowledge that corncob waste and cocoa waste that are widely available in the surrounding environment can be used as compost material. The method used is the method of socialization, counseling and discussion as well as demonstrations in the form of the practice of making rhizocompost directly in the field with farmer groups and the surrounding community. The results of this activity obtained rhizocompost made from corn cobs waste and cocoa waste. The conclusion that can be drawn from this activity is the increasing understanding of the community, especially the Farmers Group (KWT Tunas Harapan) about the benefits of corncob waste and cocoa waste that can be used as the main ingredients for making compost.

Abstract

Tauruslina EA, Trizelia, Yaherwandi, Hamid H. 2017. Diversity of plant species in paddy ecosystem in West Sumatra. Biodiversitas 18: 1218-1225. Community is a group of living things which have adjusted and inhabited a natural habitat. Characteristics of the community in an environment are its diversity. The diversity of the plants is a plant species that occupy an ecosystem. The research was aimed at determining species diversity, the dominance of plant species and summed dominance ratio (SDR) in paddy ecosystem. The plant samples were taken from the location of endemic areas of brown plant hopper in Tanjung Mutiara Subdistrict, Agam District West Sumatra. Sampling was done by using two methods, (i) survey methods with direct data collection; (ii) squares method, observation of sample plots in the field. The level of diversity of plant species was analyzed using diversity index of Shannon-Wiener (H’). Plant species dominance was analyzed using dominance index (C). The results showed that index value of Shannon-Wienner ranged 1.00 – 1.73, which indicated that the category of diversity level of plants was medium. Dominance index ranged 0.03 - 0.08 which meant there were a dominant species among the plants in the study areas. The highest SDR in the ecosystem type III were Cyperus rotundus (40.87%) and Borreria laevis (37.43%), in the type I was C. rotundus (34.90%) and in type II was Portulaca oleracea (20.08%). The dominant plant species found in the type I were C. rotundus, Eleusine indica, Borreria laevis, in type II were P. oleracea, C. rotundus, Amaranthus spinosus and in type III were C. rotundus, B. laevis, and A. spinosus.

Abstract

Syahrawati M, Nelly N, Hamid H, Efendi S. 2018. Short Communication: Abundance of corn planthopper (Stenocranus pacificus Kirkaldy 1907, Hemiptera: Delphacidae) on five new corn varieties. Biodiversitas 19: 1029-1034. Both local and hybrid corn varieties have been attacked by Stenocranus pacificus or corn planthopper frequently grown in West Sumatra. So, the basic aim of the study is to know about the abundance of S. pacificus on major five corn varieties that will be intermittently released viz., N35, N37, NT10, NT104, and NT105. The study was conducted around palm plantation in Dharmasraya District using Randomized Block Design in 5 replications. The observations were made at weekly intervals throughout the season after planting up to 8 weeks. Number of S. pacificus were collected from 16 hills by using simple aspirator, selected randomly from each unit. The measurement of leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter and trichome length were also performed to confirm the physical effect of S. pacificus preferences. LSD test at 5% level of significance was done to determine the influence of different varieties on insect population. The S. pacificus preferably effect to NT10 variety as compared to other varieties from the early growth of corn, but the S. pacificus abundance was higher at the generative phase than the vegetative. There was a very rapid increase in its population from week to week. Physical factors of the plant, as like as trichome, affected the insect abundance.

Abstract

Yanti Y, Warnita, Reflin. 2018. Short Communication: Development of selected PGPR consortium to control Ralstonia syzygii subsp. indonesiensis and promote the growth of tomato. Biodiversitas 19: xxxx. A microbial consortium is a group of different species of microorganisms and acts as a community. Combinations of biocontrol strains are expected to have a better result to suppress multiple plant diseases. Our previous research had selected four plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains from chili (B. pseudomycoides strain NBRC 101232, B. cereus strain CCM 2010, Bacillus toyonensis strain BCT-7112, Serratia nematodiphila strain DZ0503SBS1) and three strains from tomato (Bacillus pseudomycoides strain NBRC 101232, Bacillus toyonensis strain BCT-7112, Bacillus thuringiensis strain ATCC 10792 ) which had ability to promote growth and control Ralstonia syzygii subsp. indonesiensis indigenously. The strains were used in the development of PGPR consortiums to increase their ability for biocontrol agent of Ralstonia syzigii subsp. indonesiensis and promoting the growth of tomato. Results showed that not all strains had good compatibility to grow together. Ten consortiums were developed based on their compatibilities. All consortiums exhibited the capability to reduce bacterial wilt disease development and also promote the growth of tomato. The consortium consisted of Serratia nematodiphila strain DZ0503SBS1, B. cereus strain CCM 2010, Bacillus aryabhattai strain B8W22 and Bacillus cereus strain IAM 12605 resulted in the best ability to reduce disease development and promote growth and yield of tomato.

Abstract

Abstract. Nelly N, Syahrawati MY, Hamid H, Habazar T, Gusnia DN. 2019. Diversity and characterization of entomopathogenic fungi from rhizosphere of maize plants as potential biological control agents. Biodiversitas 20: 1435-1441. The diversity and characters of entomopathogenic fungi in soil are influenced by cultivation techniques. This study aims at determining the characters and pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi in maize plant. Materials were extracted from maize plant rhizosphere at different planting system (monoculture, polyculture, and monoculture of corn on formerly oil palm plantation or replanting) in Nagari Koto Baru, Luhak Nan Duo Subdistrict, West Pasaman District, and West Sumatra Province. Insect bait and series dilution were used to carry out the isolation, while Tenebrio molitor larvae were used for the pathogenicity test. Parameters observed include macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, and pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi. The result shows that there are three types of entomopathogenic fungi with various features. After identification, it was known that Aspergillus and Metarizium were obtained from mono, polyculture and by replanting crops, while Beauveria was found from the rhizosphere of corn grown in polyculture with pathogenicity identified as one of the high causes of death to larvae T. molitor with LT50 ranging from 48.03-48.48 hours. Abstract

Abstract. Ikhsan Z, Hidrayani, Yaherwandi, Hamid H. 2020. The diversity and abundance of Hymenoptera insects on tidal swamp rice field in Indragiri Hilir District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1020-1026. Hymenoptera is one of the four largest insect orders and it plays a vital role in human life as pollinators, parasitoids, and predators. Hymenoptera parasitoids are particularly important as agents of biological control of pest. The objective of this research was to study the diversity and abundance of Hymenoptera on tidal swamp rice field in Indragiri Hilir District, Riau Province, Indonesia. Samplings were conducted in 3 sub-districts of rice production centers, namely Batang Tuaka, Keritang and Reteh, using four trapping techniques (i.e. insect net, malaise trap, pitfall trap, and yellow pan trap). Shannon diversity index (H '), Krebs evenness index (E), and Jaccard similarity index (Is) were calculated. We found 4,701 individuals consisting of 39 families and 319 species of Hymenoptera at the three studied areas. Tidal swamp rice in Indragiri Hilir District had a high species diversity of Hymenoptera parasitoids and Hymenoptera predators, but a moderate species diversity of Hymenoptera pollinators. Species diversity and evenness of Hymenoptera parasitoids and predators were higher in Keritang than in Batang Tuaka and Reteh. The families of Formicidae, Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, and Scelionidae had the highest number of species, while Formicidae, Scelionidae, Diapriidae, and Braconidae had the highest number of individuals. Based on these findings, the abundance and diversity of Hymenoptera insects in Indragiri Hilir District have the potentials to be developed as biological agents to control pests on tidal swamp rice in this area.

Abstract

Abstract. Nelly N, Khairul U, Putri AY, Hamid H, Syahrawati MY. 2020. Isolation and selection of maize plants rhizobacteria with the potential of entomopathogens against Spodoptera litura F (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Biodiversitas 21: 753-758.  Spodoptera litura is a polyphagous pest that can be controlled with entomopathogen. Furthermore, Rhizobacteria derived from the rhizosphere of corn plants are expected to control this pest. This research, therefore, was conducted to obtain the entomopathogenic rhizobacteria to control S. litura derived from the rhizosphere of corn plants. Data sampling was carried out at corn plantations in West Pasaman Regency, while Isolation, selection, and testing of S. litura were conducted at the Biological Control Laboratory of the Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University. The method uses serial glowing techniques cultured on Nutrient Agar (NA) media, with the selected isolates tested for their ability as an entomopathogen against S. litura. The feed dip method given to S. litura larvae was used to test for rhizobacteria virulence determination with entomopathogen, used to observe the larvae mortality rate, percentage of pupae, and adult formed. Furthermore, observation of morphological and physiological characters was conducted on entomopathogenic rhizobacteria, with hypersensitive testing conducted on Mirabilis jalapa plants. The results of rhizobacterial isolation from corn rhizosphere obtained 12 entomopathogenic isolates. Deadly larvae of S. litura 51-91.11%, 0.00-8.89% pupae, and 0.00- 6.67% adult were formed. The gram test results obtained approximately 8;4 positive (+) and four negative isolates (-), respectively. Hypersensitivity test results found that one of 12 isolates caused necrotic reactions in Mirabilis jalapa. Therefore, a total of 11 rhizobacteria isolates are entomopathogenic and safe to be used as S. litura biological control agents.
