Abstract

The vernacularization of the Qur'an has become an important study area for Indonesian scholars. However, translations or interpretations in the local languages of eastern Indonesia, especially South Sulawesi, have received limited attention. This research aims to fill this gap by examining the development of Qur'anic interpretation in the Bugis language in South Sulawesi. Employing a descriptive-analytic method and a social-historical approach, the study reveals that all authors of Bugis-language interpretations originate from the Madrasah Arabiyah Islamiyah (MAI), established by Anregurutta (AG) H. As'ad. As a result, these authors demonstrate comparable perspectives, styles, methods, and ideologies, distinguishing the vernacularization efforts in South Sulawesi from those in other parts of Indonesia. The research highlights the crucial role of the As'adiyah Islamic Boarding School in fostering the Bugis tafsir tradition in eastern Indonesia. Additionally, it finds that the motivations for translating or interpreting the Qur'an into Bugis encompass the goals of deepening comprehension of Islamic teachings within the indigenous community and preserving the Bugis language and culture within the context of Islamic discourse. Ultimately, the study illustrates the harmony between Islamic teachings and the socio-cultural context in Indonesia by examining the efforts to adapt Islamic practices to the local setting in Bugis Land

Abstract

This article examines the Pattula' Bala (PB) practice by the Bugis Muslim community in Indonesia, especially in Kendari City. PB is the practice of displaying the verses of the Qur’an, which its users in certain places install intending to prevent them from calamity. This article aims to reveal the genealogy of the PB tradition as part of the discursive Islamic tradition. This study uses a descriptive-analytic design from interview data, documentation, and literature exploration. The data were analyzed using the genealogical theory developed by Talal Asad and the exegetical reception approach developed by Ahmad Rafiq, especially in Qur’anic studies discourse. Research findings show that the Bugis Muslim community practices PB as a repellent to disasters and as a motivation to be more active in worship (tabarruk). Historically, information about similar practices is also found in Hadith and Faḍā’il ‘Amal literature. However, they have undergone a process of transmission and transformation from time to time until the entry of Islam into Sulawesi. This process cannot be separated from the role of religious figures who introduced Islam in Sulawesi through a Sufistic or mystic approach. Nevertheless, these findings still require philological studies, so the claims of this study are more convincing historically. The implication of this research is to synthesize the claim of “Islam as a discursive tradition,” which is claimed by Talal Asad. Keywords: Discursive Tradition, Pattula’ Bala’, the Muslim Bugis Community, Qur’anic Reception. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komunitas Muslim Bugis mempraktikkan PB tidak hanya Pattula’ Bala as a Discursive Tradition: The Reception of the Qur’an....

Abstract

Abstract Albeit research into religious moderation at Indonesian Islamic Higher Education (PTKIN) has been widely undertaken, little empirical research reports on tracing students’ final works as critical research to examine the alignment of PTKIN’s vision in support of government programs to build an inclusive and moderate discourse on religious understanding distribution. This study employs Tracing of Research Studies in three steps, taxonomy analysis, citation analysis, and statistical analysis of diversity. The analysis was conducted on Qur’an and Hadith theses and dissertations published by five institutions. The findings indicate that the religious moderation discourse established in PTKIN’s dissertation and thesis truly conveys the ambiguity of its concept. The ideas employed in the research obscured the government's concepts in establishing religious moderation in the Indonesian setting. This research proposes that mainstreaming religious moderation in PTKIN be implemented more thoroughly, particularly in compiling students’ final papers.

Abstract

The growing interest in Living Qur'an Studies (LQS) among scholars in Indonesia highlights its potential as a dynamic approach in Qur'anic studies. LQS emphasizes the interaction between Qur'anic teachings and lived experiences, integrating sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literature, and interpretation studies. Despite its promise, applying LQS consistently in academic research remains challenging. This study evaluates the quality and implementation of LQS in publications from Islamic Religious Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) in the Sulawesi region. Through constructivist analysis, which explores how knowledge is actively shaped within academic discourse, this research assesses trends, methodologies, and challenges affecting the sustainability of LQS research. The findings highlight three key outcomes: (1) a growing trend of LQS adoption across four PTKIN institutions, (2) inconsistencies in methodological application, and (3) structural and conceptual challenges hindering the continuity of LQS. This study offers practical recommendations to improve the quality of LQS research, encouraging better methodological alignment and broader impact. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to advance LQS as a relevant field that bridges Qur'anic studies with contemporary societal contexts.

Abstract

Christian Prince’s (CP) presence on YouTube opened a new chapter in Christian opposition actors who act as cross-theological debaters between Muslims and Christians who, for the previous two decades, were only dominated by Muslims. Through the narratives on YouTube, this Christian apologist tries to convince the public that the Qur’an contains contradictory statements as the holy book for Muslims. In response to such an issue, this research aims to investigate the construction of CP’s interpretation, which highlights the authenticity of the Qur’an. Qualitative content and thematic analyses and the framing approach developed by William A. Gamson were employed. Findings suggest that the representation of CP’s understanding of the Qur’an verses uses a decontextualization approach. Also, the vast knowledge of the Arabic language and literary translations further strengthen the narratives to convince the public of the allegations. However, instead of considering the historical context in understanding the scientific meaning of the Qur’an, this Christian apologist uses literal meaning as a framing device. This phenomenon has shown that cross-theological debates only provoke persistent inter-religious hatred and resentment. Therefore, such debates are inclined to trigger the propaganda of religious extremists.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether or not revivalism ideology exists among academics in Islamic higher education institutes in the province of Southeast Sulawesi. It is accomplished through the use of an exegetical reception approach of their understanding of the Āyāt at-Taḥkīm (Quran chapter al-Midah [5]:44-47). Data was gathered by combining survey technique development with in-depth interviews. The collected data was analyzed using a philosophical and phenomenological hermeneutic approach to assess the academic communitys understanding of Āyāt at-Taḥkīm. According to the survey results, Āyāt at-Taḥkīm is very popular among academics higher education institutes in Southeast Sulawesi. Most of the academic community’s information comes from religious studies on social media. They acknowledge and accept these verses as the foundation for the legitimacy of kaffah enforcement of Islamic law as the foundation for Indonesia’s political system. Meanwhile, the interviews show that most informants label those who disagree with the discourse with theological labels (kāfir and thāgūt). As a result, even though these characteristics have not reached an extreme level, their comprehension is included in the revivalism ideologys characteristics.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore critically the interpretation result of QS. Al-Taubah/9:71 in Tafsir Qur‟anTematik by the Ministry of Religion Affairs Republic of Indonesia. This is conducted because it issuspected that it contains a gender bias interpretation. This research used a critical qualitative-interpretativedesign by investigating the interpretation of QS. al-Taubah / 9: 71 using a contextualizationinterpretation. The findings reveal that the Thematic Interpretation of Al-Quran by the Ministry ofReligion affairs published for the first time in 2009 represents the interpretation of the QS. al-Taubah/9:71 as legitimacy of limiting the area of political leadership for women. Therefore, the product of suchinterpretations tends to be biased because it limits the area of state leadership based on a particular gender. This interpretation seems to contrast with the meaning of the verse that is found through the exploration oftextual, contextual-historical, and dynamic contextual approaches. The meaning obtained from this versediscusses about the socio-spiritual relationship in the internal Muslim community only, rather than thepolitical context. The same results can also be seen in Tafsir al-Wajiz, in which the work is also theinterpretation of the Ministry of Religion published in 2016, as well as the interpretation of scholars invarious classical commentaries. The implication of the results of the interpretation of gender bias in TafsirQur‟an Tematik can have an impact on government policies in positioning the women in the society, especially in the area of structural leadership of country. This research contributes to the study of Qur’anicexegesis and gender discourse in Islam by offering a critical framework for evaluating genderedinterpretations of religious texts. Additionally, it demonstrates the importance of contextual hermeneutics inaddressing structural biases in Islamic exegesis and proposes a more inclusive approach to Qur’anicinterpretation.

Abstract

This study explores the transformation of the concept of qitāl within the historical discourse of Qur’anic exegesis, particularly in relation to verses often associated with warfare. The issue has gained increasing relevance in the context of Islamophobia and widespread misconceptions that frequently link Islam to violence. By employing a genealogical approach to Qur’anic exegesis, this research aims to trace the transformation of the meaning of qitāl from the pre-Qur’anic era to contemporary exegesis. The findings reveal that while qitāl initially referred to physical combat with a brutal connotation, it evolved into a concept imbued with moral and spiritual dimensions within Islamic teachings. This shift continued across the exegetical discourse from the classical to contemporary periods, where qitāl no longer solely emphasizes physical warfare but encompasses non-physical struggles that contribute to discussions on social justice and global peace. This transformation has been shaped by various social and political contexts, as well as by the agents involved. These influences indicate an ongoing dynamism in Qur’anic interpretation, reflecting its adaptation to global developments, particularly in response to Islamophobia and the narratives that associate Islam with violence.

Abstract

This study investigates the experiences of niqab-wearing female students at the State Islamic Institute of Kendari (Institut Agama Islam Negeri – IAIN Kendari), the sole public Islamic higher education institution in Southeast Sulawesi, as they navigate academic life amid prevailing social stigma and the absence of institutional policies regarding niqab usage. The niqab is frequently associated with stereotypes of exclusivity and extremism, and is often perceived as a barrier to social interaction and academic participation. Utilising a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions involving 15 female students who wear the niqab. The findings indicate that the lack of formal regulations concerning the use of the niqab generates ambiguity regarding institutional standards and student behavior. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrate resilience through adaptive strategies, such as using social media platforms for self-expression and solidarity. They also display emotional maturity in managing stigma while remaining active in academic and extracurricular activities. Drawing on Self-Presentation Theory and Social Adjustment Theory, the study reveals that niqab-wearing students employ friendliness, openness, humour, and academic achievement to counter negative perceptions. Social media further serves as a vital space for articulating perspectives and fostering community. This research highlights the need for inclusive policies in Islamic higher education and contributes to broader discussions on religious diversity, gender, and inclusivity within multicultural academic settings in Eastern Indonesia.
