Abstract

This paper aims to explore critically the interpretation result of QS. Al-Taubah/9:71 in Tafsir Qur‟anTematik by the Ministry of Religion Affairs Republic of Indonesia. This is conducted because it issuspected that it contains a gender bias interpretation. This research used a critical qualitative-interpretativedesign by investigating the interpretation of QS. al-Taubah / 9: 71 using a contextualizationinterpretation. The findings reveal that the Thematic Interpretation of Al-Quran by the Ministry ofReligion affairs published for the first time in 2009 represents the interpretation of the QS. al-Taubah/9:71 as legitimacy of limiting the area of political leadership for women. Therefore, the product of suchinterpretations tends to be biased because it limits the area of state leadership based on a particular gender. This interpretation seems to contrast with the meaning of the verse that is found through the exploration oftextual, contextual-historical, and dynamic contextual approaches. The meaning obtained from this versediscusses about the socio-spiritual relationship in the internal Muslim community only, rather than thepolitical context. The same results can also be seen in Tafsir al-Wajiz, in which the work is also theinterpretation of the Ministry of Religion published in 2016, as well as the interpretation of scholars invarious classical commentaries. The implication of the results of the interpretation of gender bias in TafsirQur‟an Tematik can have an impact on government policies in positioning the women in the society, especially in the area of structural leadership of country. This research contributes to the study of Qur’anicexegesis and gender discourse in Islam by offering a critical framework for evaluating genderedinterpretations of religious texts. Additionally, it demonstrates the importance of contextual hermeneutics inaddressing structural biases in Islamic exegesis and proposes a more inclusive approach to Qur’anicinterpretation.

Abstract

This study explores the transformation of the concept of qitāl within the historical discourse of Qur’anic exegesis, particularly in relation to verses often associated with warfare. The issue has gained increasing relevance in the context of Islamophobia and widespread misconceptions that frequently link Islam to violence. By employing a genealogical approach to Qur’anic exegesis, this research aims to trace the transformation of the meaning of qitāl from the pre-Qur’anic era to contemporary exegesis. The findings reveal that while qitāl initially referred to physical combat with a brutal connotation, it evolved into a concept imbued with moral and spiritual dimensions within Islamic teachings. This shift continued across the exegetical discourse from the classical to contemporary periods, where qitāl no longer solely emphasizes physical warfare but encompasses non-physical struggles that contribute to discussions on social justice and global peace. This transformation has been shaped by various social and political contexts, as well as by the agents involved. These influences indicate an ongoing dynamism in Qur’anic interpretation, reflecting its adaptation to global developments, particularly in response to Islamophobia and the narratives that associate Islam with violence.

Abstract

This study investigates the experiences of niqab-wearing female students at the State Islamic Institute of Kendari (Institut Agama Islam Negeri – IAIN Kendari), the sole public Islamic higher education institution in Southeast Sulawesi, as they navigate academic life amid prevailing social stigma and the absence of institutional policies regarding niqab usage. The niqab is frequently associated with stereotypes of exclusivity and extremism, and is often perceived as a barrier to social interaction and academic participation. Utilising a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions involving 15 female students who wear the niqab. The findings indicate that the lack of formal regulations concerning the use of the niqab generates ambiguity regarding institutional standards and student behavior. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrate resilience through adaptive strategies, such as using social media platforms for self-expression and solidarity. They also display emotional maturity in managing stigma while remaining active in academic and extracurricular activities. Drawing on Self-Presentation Theory and Social Adjustment Theory, the study reveals that niqab-wearing students employ friendliness, openness, humour, and academic achievement to counter negative perceptions. Social media further serves as a vital space for articulating perspectives and fostering community. This research highlights the need for inclusive policies in Islamic higher education and contributes to broader discussions on religious diversity, gender, and inclusivity within multicultural academic settings in Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

This research aims to uncover the prophetic intelligence aspect through the interpretation of Surah Āli-'Imrān [3]:190-191 as part of the manṭiqiyah verses. This research implements the Ma'nā-cum-Maghzā interpretation through four stages of analysis: linguistic, grammatical analysis, intra- and intertextual analysis, micro and macro-historical analysis, and contextual analysis. These four analyses aim to reveal the historical and contextual significance messages of Surah Āli-'Imrān [3]:190-191. The research findings demonstrate that logic plays a vital role in unravelling the most profound messages in each Quranic verse. Linguistically, the phrase Ūlil Albāb encompasses human faculties that are logical and spiritual (contemplating and remembering Allah), thus it is inaccurate if the thinking process is deemed separated in the interpretation process of revelation texts. Historically, several cases from the Hadith narrations were discovered that illustrate how the Prophet responded to several similar questions but with different answers. This exhibits that the Prophet underwent a thinking process to tailor his answers to the context and the questioner. However, reasoning alone is insufficient without the spiritual intuition because thinking without spiritual discipline can yield value-free thoughts. This kind of contemplation was bequeathed by the Prophets which the author coins as the prophetic intelligence aspect. Based on these research findings, the significance messages of Surah Ali-'Imran [3]:190-191 assert that reason is not value-free; instead, it constitutes part of the revelation interpretation apparatus

Abstract

The growing interest in Living Qur'an Studies (LQS) among scholars in Indonesia highlights its potential as a dynamic approach in Qur'anic studies. LQS emphasizes the interaction between Qur'anic teachings and lived experiences, integrating sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literature, and interpretation studies. Despite its promise, applying LQS consistently in academic research remains challenging. This study evaluates the quality and implementation of LQS in publications from Islamic Religious Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) in the Sulawesi region. Through constructivist analysis, which explores how knowledge is actively shaped within academic discourse, this research assesses trends, methodologies, and challenges affecting the sustainability of LQS research. The findings highlight three key outcomes: (1) a growing trend of LQS adoption across four PTKIN institutions, (2) inconsistencies in methodological application, and (3) structural and conceptual challenges hindering the continuity of LQS. This study offers practical recommendations to improve the quality of LQS research, encouraging better methodological alignment and broader impact. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to advance LQS as a relevant field that bridges Qur'anic studies with contemporary societal contexts.
