Abstract

Kasang Kota Karang is a village located in Kumpeh Ulu Subdistrict, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province, where most residents engage in vegetable and fruit farming. However, local farmers face challenges such as suboptimal crop growth and yields, as well as high infestation rates of plant pests and diseases, particularly in red chili cultivation. In response, a community service team from the University of Jambi collaborated with farmers through dialogue and participatory discussions to identify a potential solution: utilizing the abundant fruit and vegetable waste available in the farming area to produce Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) and biopesticides. This program aimed to enhance farmers' knowledge and skills in waste processing technology and to improve their income through the potential commercialization of LOF and biopesticide products. The approach used was Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), emphasizing active engagement of the farming partners throughout the implementation process. Evaluation results indicated a significant increase in farmers’ understanding and technical capabilities, with over 90% demonstrating improved proficiency. The farming partners expressed strong enthusiasm and commitment to applying and scaling up the use of LOF and biopesticides in their vegetable farming practices, contributing to better crop yields, increased income, and improved environmental health

Abstract

Peat soil is an alternative land for agricultural cultivation and food security areas in the future because fertile land is no longer available due to the conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural land, while peatland is still widely available. However, for use as agricultural land, peat soil has many obstacles such as acid soil and low availability of macro and micronutrients, so nutrients must be added. Currently, farmers are faced with the problem of increasingly expensive and scarce fertilizers. On the one hand, around agricultural land, there is a lot of agricultural waste that is abundant and not utilized, so it becomes waste. Coconut coir and areca nut are agricultural wastes that are mostly wasted on peatlands. This study aims to determine the role of Palma waste POC in increasing the productivity of peat soil. The method used in this writing is a literature review, namely by collecting various kinds of literature related to the research topic, then conducting a literature review and reviewing the literature with relevant discussions. The results of the study revealed that POC of coconut coir and areca nut can be used as POC.

Abstract

Nowadays, biofuels are increasingly developed in the form of bioethanol which is gained from cassava. As the time passes by, however, this solution raises another issue as the excessive use of biofuels may create a competition between the needs for fuel and food. Waste empty bunch of palm oil (WEBP) constitutes as a cellulose material which is quite potential to be developed as raw materials for ethanol. So far, the WEBP is available in large quantities and it seems that the WEBP remains underused. In fact, it contains a high concentration of cellulose (45%). For that reason, this research attempted to gather an optimal formula of yeast dosage and the length of fermentation in order to produce standardized and high quality ethanol. The quality standards covered ethanol level (SNI17390:2008), methanol level (SNI7390:2008), acidity as CH3COOH (SNI7390:2008), pHe (SNI7390:2008, and appearance (visual observation) (SNI7390:2008). Therefore, they could be used to suffice alternative energy needs which were renewable and environmentally friendly. In detail, the present research aimed at identifying 1) the effect of the fermentation length, 2) understanding the effect of added dosage of the yeast, and 3) identifying the interaction between the fermentation length treatment and the treatment of added dosage of yeast. Results of the discussion indicated that the length of fermentation treatment had a significant effect as the longer the fermentation, the higher the ethanol level value. In addition, the ethanol level tended to increase, the sugar level tended to decline, and the pH value seemed to fall.

Abstract

Shallots are a horticultural commodity with high economic value. The high demand is reversed to the low production. The continuous and excessive use of NPK fertilizer in shallot cultivation will have an impact on decreasing land productivity. Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) is an alternative to reduce this impact. The research aimed to examine the response of shallot plants to application of PGPR and several dosage levels of NPK 15-10-12 fertilizer, and to obtain the best treatment. The research was carried out from July to September 2023 in Sandaran Galeh Village, Sungai Penuh City, Jambi Province at an altitude of 836 m above sea level using a Randomized Block Design. The experiment used several concentrations of PGPR and doses of NPK 15-10-12 i.e. No PGPR and No NPK, NPK 525 kg ha-1, PGPR 5 mL L-1 + NPK 400 kg ha-1, PGPR 10 mL L-1 + NPK 275 kg ha-1, PGPR 15 mL L-1 + NPK 150 kg ha-1, and PGPR 20 mL L-1. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and DMRT test at the 5% level. The results showed that PGPR 15 mL L-1 + NPK 150 kg ha-1 produced the best growth response and yield in an effort to reduce the use of NPK 15-10-12 fertilizer. The PGPR can be applied to promote eco-green in shallot productivity.

Abstract

Sweet corn is a horticultural commodity that considerably has the development potential between immature oil palms (2 years). The experiment aimed to determine the response of sweet corn’s variety as an intercrop in immature oil palms to various doses of chicken manure. The research was conducted in Muhajirin Village, Muaro Jambi Regency in February-April 2023. The experiment was arranged in a factorial pattern group randomized design repeated three times. The first factor was sweet corn varieties consisting of "Perkasa", "Exotic" and "Bonanza", the second factor was the dosage of chicken manure namely 0 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, 20 t ha-1, 30 t ha-1, and 40 t ha-1. The observation variables were plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, cob length, cob diameter, cob weight, and sweetness level. Variance’s data were analyzed followed by LSD test at 5% level. The optimum dose was obtained by regression analysis. The results showed differences in the sweetness level of corn varieties “Exotic” and “Bonanza” to chicken manure. Chicken manure independently affected all variables except cob diameter. The optimum dose of chicken manure has not been detected due to the variety of responses to the dose of chicken manure still showed a linear trend.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate the existence of the core elements of the Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) method implemented at SMTK Gloria Sentani, along with the impact felt by students if it is not applied inclusively and holistically. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method with a thematic approach. To validate the data, the researcher applied data triangulation sourced from interviews, observations, and document reviews. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied the Miles and Huberman method, which involves data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and analysis. The analysis focuses on the existence and absence of the 5 core elements in the CTL method, which include relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring. The results obtained from this research indicate that 3 elements—experiencing, applying, and transferring—are not included, whereas relating and cooperating are included. The impact felt when the CTL elements are not applied holistically is that students do not think creatively and innovatively, do not think critically, and learning outcomes tend not to be achieved. The t fundamental reason for not implementing the CTL method inclusively and holistically is the factor of readiness to learn and students’ background.
