Abstract

This article aims to identify and classify the mask collections at the Mpu Tantular StateMuseum, Sidoarjo, as a visual narrative of the cultural richness of East Java and itssurrounding regions. Through in-depth identification activities conducted from September17–19, 2025, the mask collections were classified into three main variants based on regions:Topeng Malang (Malang Masks), Topeng Madura (Madura Masks), and some other regionalmasks. The Malang mask collection, the most numerous collection, represents the epic tale ofPanji Asmorobangun. Its characteristic features include symmetrical, refined carvings andthe use of philosophical colors. The green color shown by Panji symbolizes chivalry andtranquility, contrasting sharply with the fiery red possessed by Klana Sewandana, whichrepresents anger. The faded colors on the ancient masks emphasize their inherent historicaland spiritual gravitas and value as evidence of the preservation of this noble art form. The Madura mask collection, associated with the Madura’s puppet maskperformances, displays characters that reflect the resilience of the community from theMadura island, also known as the salt island. Their characteristics are simpler but firm, hard, and expressive (such as bulging eyes or fangs), implying a strong fighting spirit andstraightforward demeanor. The other regional masks group completes the Nusantara (an archipelago country)mosaic, including collections from Cirebon (such as the White Elephant mask), Yogyakarta,as well as the Sandur mask (from Jombang/ Tuban) and the Dongkrek mask (from Madiun). The presence of these masks from outside the immediate region confirms East Java’s culturalconnection and acculturation with the wider archipelago.Overall, the mask collection at the Mpu Tantular museum functions as a "spiritualwindow" that reflects the contrast and unity of values, ranging from the agrarian idealism(Malang) to the coastal fighting spirit (Madura). These artifacts are an invaluable treasurethat ensures moral philosophy and local wisdom continue to live on as an educationalmedium for future generations.

Abstract

The Jaranan Laksamana Manggala group, now renamed Laksana Manggala (LM), is a traditional arts group that has grown in the Tumpang area, Malang Regency. Comprised of young members who are passionate about preserving karawitan and jaranan, LM faces increasing challenges as the number of similar groups in the region continues to rise. To remain relevant and competitive, LM is required to be more innovative and creative in both artistic expression and organizational development. This community service program aims to strengthen entrepreneurship through capacity development. The focus includes improving members’ technical skills as dancers and musicians, while also providing training in producing jaranan-themed souvenirs such as Tumpang key chains that offer alternative income opportunities. The program applied a participatory approach through entrepreneurship workshops, group management mentoring, and the use of digital technology for promotion and performance documentation.

Abstract

Regeneration of traditional arts is an important thing that really needs to be done because it is a strategic step in maintaining the sustainability of local culture. Jaranan thrives in the Tumpang area, but only the Satri Bokor group has a group of children aged 6 to 15 years. This research was specifically conducted to analyse the regeneration strategy for child Jaranan dancers carried out in the Satrio Bokor Tumpang Group, Malang Regency. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach, where data is obtained through observation, interviews and documentation. The research results show that the regeneration strategy is carried out through routine training every afternoon after school, a family approach, and involvement in Jaranan performances and YouTube social media promotions. The main challenges faced are competition with other emerging arts, namely Bantengan, limited funds, and children's time commitment. However, this regeneration has had a positive impact on preserving culture and forming the character of the younger generation. In conclusion, the regeneration strategy implemented by the Satrio Bokor Group is effective in involving children in loving and preserving Jaranan art, although further support from various parties is needed.

Murals are often a medium for conveying people's aspirations. However, most people think that murals are just graffiti on the wall with no meaning. In this case, mural artists play a role in voicing aspirations, criticism, ideas and things that are bothering society. Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the functional considerations underlying the community's decision to organize a Wayang Topeng Malang performance by selecting a particular play. Given the high costs associated with staging this performance, the decision-making process has a significant impact on the supporting community. The study uses a functional method, and data is collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and literature reviews (books, scientific articles, and mass media publications). Data analysis is carried out through tabulation and interpretation based on the tendency of the function to organize performance. The results of the study indicate that the decision to stage a Wayang Topeng Malang performance is influenced by three main categories of considerations: (1) Consideration of the Purpose of the Performance (for example, for traditional ceremonies or entertainment), (2) Consideration of Interests (both individual and social), and (3) Consideration of the Expectations desired from the performance. These findings confirm that the determination of the play and the decision to perform the Wayang Topeng Malang performance is a phenomenon driven by clear social and cultural functions in the lives of the Malang community.
