Abstract

This study examines the contestation between Ulu Desa (sacred-traditional authority) and Prajuru Desa (administrative authority) in the Bali Aga villages of Pedawa and Julah, which reflects the ongoing tension between customary governance and state regulation. The research aims to analyze how historical trajectories, regulatory frameworks, and socio-economic transformations have shaped the dynamics between sacred and bureaucratic leadership. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and interpreted with Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, and field as well as Foucault’s theories on power and discourse. The findings reveal that, (1) historical practices of surveillance embedded dual forms of discipline ritual and administrative within village governance, (2) the penetration of state mechanisms, particularly through village competitions and regional regulations, gradually displaced sacred legitimacy in favor of bureaucratic authority and (3) socio-economic factors such as migration, education, technology, and financial support further reinforced the dominance of Prajuru Desa. Nevertheless, Ulu Desa continues to hold symbolic significance as a guardian of cosmological order. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the contestation between these two institutions illustrates a hybridization of power in Bali Aga society, where tradition and modernity coexist through tension, negotiation, and adaptation.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a model for addressing multiple identities of the Balinese lexicon within the anggah-ungguhing (speech level) system. The model developed is expected to resolve the multiple identities frequently found in the Balinese speech level dictionaries and similar references. Furthermore, this study was based on the principles of classification, applying the theory of lexical semantic feature differentiation. A qualitative method was used, and the data were collected through document recording and questionnaire methods. The data were then analyzed using the extralingual context method, with a focus on the domain of lexical use. This process facilitated the creation of a matrix for the Balinese lexical semantic differentiation and a work table for vocabulary identification within the speech level system. The two conceptual products effectively addressed the multiple identities of the Balinese words within the speech level system.

Abstract

This research, titled "Social Values in Komang Adnyana's Short Story 'Ngantén'," delves into a specific short story, "Ngantén." This particular piece is one of the many compelling titles found within the "Métek Bintang " short story collection. The themes explored in "Métek-Bintang" are remarkably diverse and engaging, encompassing contemporary issues such as transgender identity, LGBTQ+ concerns, child trafficking, and numerous other fascinating topics that significantly enrich modern Balinese literature. The primary objective of this analysis is to ascertain the social values embedded within the chosen short story. To achieve this, the study employed a methodical approach, dividing its research techniques into three distinct stages. Data provision involved observation and careful reading, complemented by translation techniques to ensure accurate comprehension, and meticulous note-taking. The subsequent data analysis phase utilized a qualitative method, supported by descriptive analytical techniques to thoroughly interpret the findings. Finally, the presentation of the analysis results was conducted using an informal method for clear communication. This research specifically adopted a sociology of literature approach to examine the interplay between the literary work and its societal context. The findings reveal the presence of five key social values within the short story: religious values, mutual assistance, forgiveness, compassion, and responsibility

Abstract

The short story Ngantosang Ulungan Bulan by Carma Mira reflects Balinese culture within the context of social life and romance, particularly related to the custom that forbids a younger sibling from marrying before the elder. The main character experiences inner conflict because both of the older siblings remain unmarried for their own reasons. This story emphasizes the importance of preserving Balinese cultural identity amid the current of social change and conveys a moral message about respect for family and tradition. This study aims to reveal the meanings contained in the story using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The analysis is conducted through five main codes: hermeneutic, connotative, symbolic, action, and cultural. Through this approach, cultural values, traditional symbols, and the tension between modernity and custom can be explored. As a literary work written in the Balinese language, the story also demonstrates the importance of regional language as a medium for cultural preservation and the expression of community identity.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of identity ambivalence experienced by the Dayak Tomun community in Central Kalimantan as a result of interactions between customary tradition, Protestant Christianity, and state cultural policy. The research aims to explain how indigenous identity is shaped, contested, and negotiated within these intersecting power frameworks. Using a qualitative approach and cultural studies perspective, the analysis integrates Michel Foucault’s concept of disciplinary power, Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus and symbolic capital, and Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory. The findings show that Hidup Baadat and Mati Bapati (Living by Custom and Dying by Custom) are not merely ancestral customs, but disciplinary cultural practices that shape subjectivity and social conduct. The spread of Christianity introduced new moral and ritual regimes, generating tensions in the continuity of customary authority. Meanwhile, state intervention through Law No. 5/2017 on the Advancement of Culture redefined customary practices as cultural resources for development and tourism. This process results in identity ambivalence: traditional rituals continue to be performed, yet are simultaneously reframed as cultural commodities. The study offers a multi-theoretical interpretation of indigenous identity formation by demonstrating how disciplinary power, habitus, and structuration operate together in shaping the contemporary dynamics of Tomun cultural life.
