Abstract

Introduction: Chemoprophylaxis plays a crucial role in preventing malaria among travellers to endemic regions. Atovaquone-proguanil and mefloquine are two of the main chemoprophylactic agents recommended by the WHO and CDC to prevent malaria. Both are effective in malaria prophylaxis but are associated with distinct adverse events that can influence their use in travellers. Method: Literature search was conducted in ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases until 2025 without language constraints. Inclusion criteria focused on studies assessed the use of both atovaquone-proguanil and mefloquine as malaria prophylaxis in visitors to malaria-endemic countries. The risk of bias was evaluated using TheNewcastle-Ottawa Scale and Cochrane "RoB" tool. Discussion: A total of 10 studies were included and resulting in 15 categories of adverse events. Reported events were diarrhea (RR 1.07; 95% CI; p = 0.72) mouth ulcers (RR 2.88; 95% CI; p = 0,32), indigestion (RR 1.17; 95% CI; p = 0.80), abdominal pain (RR 1.41; 95% CI; p = 0.10), vomiting & Nausea (RR 0.64; 95% CI; p = 0.16), insomnia (RR 0.25; 95% CI; p = 0.007), dizziness/vertigo (RR 0.41; 95% CI; p = 0.02), tinnitus (RR 0.70, 95% CI; p < 0.00001), anxiety (RR 0.13; 95% CI; p < 0.00001),  depression (RR 0.20; 95% CI; p < 0.00001), nightmares (RR 0.18; 95% CI; p = 0.001), headaches (RR 0.47; 95% CI; p = 0.003), dermatological effects (RR 0.89; 95% CI; p = 0.74), eye disorders (RR 0.42; 95% CI; p = 0.02), and a pooled analysis along with events not specifically mentioned (RR 0.38; 95% CI; p = 0.33). Heterogeneity among included studies was generally low to moderate. Conclusion: Practically, mefloquine is suitable for long-term weekly prophylaxis except for those with psychiatric disorders, whereas atovaquone-proguanil is preferred for short-term travel with the recommendation to administer it with food.

Abstract

Diarrhea significantly contributes to the high rates of illness and death among young children. Diarrhea can be caused by bacterial infections, viruses, or even parasites. Blastocystis hominis causes parasitic diarrhea, which can be identified by microscopy, culture, and molecular methods. Previous reports have modified the Jones’ culture medium using three different serums, such as human plasma, donkey serum, and horse serum (in Jones’ medium). This research replaces horse serum with fetal bovine serum for detection tests, morphological observation, and diagnosis of B. hominis. The research encompasses five experimental groups, each subjected to varying concentrations of fetal bovine serum: 2%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. Detection analysis is conducted using the Mc-Nemar test, while the Wilcoxon test is applied to evaluate ordinal data from morphological assessments. Diagnostic tests and metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) are performed using MedCalc® software. The findings demonstrate that serum concentrations of 2%, 10%, 20%, and 30% produced effective results in detection tests, morphological identification, and diagnostic evaluations of B. hominis, exhibiting high sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy. Fetal bovine serum can be used at a concentration of 2% in a Jones’ medium that has been modified. This depends on the results of detection tests, morphology, and diagnosis.

Abstract

Helminthiasis, particularly that caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is a major global health issue, especially in areas with poor sanitation. One method for preventing and controlling Ascaris lumbricoides infection is through identification via the Kato-Katz diagnostic technique. The use of synthetic dyes, such as methylene blue, in the Kato-Katz method raises concerns for both human health and the environment. In humans, methylene blue causes skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues upon ingestion, and systemic effects. Furthermore, its environmental impact includes reducing light penetration and acting as a toxic component in food chains. An alternative approach involves utilizing post-use offerings from Hindu rituals in Bali, known as canang, which consist of flower components such as Impatiens balsamina L. and Tagetes erecta. The natural dyes found in these flowers serve as an alternative to traditional staining methods. This study examined the efficacy of flower extracts as stainings using the cellophane absorption test, helminth egg detection and morphology identification, pH test, and measurement of heavy metal concentration. The dye made from canang flower waste at 3% did not differ much from manufactured stainings. Thus, canang flower waste is a safe alternative.

Abstract

After pandemic, post-acute care is being important to maintain wellness in patient with chronic disease. Diabetes type II (diabetes mellitus) is a degenerative chronic disease whose number of cases is increasing from time to time. This increase is also in line with the increasing interest of individuals in spiritual healing and this spiritual healing method is efficient because it can be done independently and with online tutorials. This study aims to prove the effectiveness of spiritual healing in reducing anxiety levels in diabetes type II patients. This research is Quasi-experimental research (quasi-experimental). A quasi-experiment is an experiment that requires treatment but does not use random assignment in creating comparisons to conclude that there is a change due to treatment. This research in the first year uses quantitative and descriptive qualitative analysis techniques according to the characteristics of the data needed to describe each research problem. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion, it was concluded that anxiety is a condition where our bodies experience feelings of anxiety and restlessness that can arise from the presence of a trigger (stressor). The role of yoga in reducing anxiety in most journals is said to be positively related and proven to have a significant effect.

Abstract

Diarrhea is the third leading cause of death among children under the age of five worldwide. Diarrhea can result from bacterial infections, viral infections, or parasitic infestations that disrupt the functioning of the digestive system. Therefore, research on the morphology of Blastocystis hominis is necessary to aid in the diagnosis of diarrhea. This study is an experimental investigation conducted on Jones culture medium that has been altered with fetal bovine serum. The study consists of five trial groups with different volume: P1 (0.1 mL), P2 (0.5 mL), P3 (1.0 mL), P4 (1.5 mL), and P5 (2.0 mL). The morphological findings of Blastocystis hominis in each trial group, with pH averages P1 (7.29), P2 (7.27), P3 (7.30), dan P4 (7.31), were examined microscopically. The results were found to be optimal, with a statistical value of P>0.05 in the independent t-test. The P5 test group (6.15) differed significantly from the gold standard at P<0.001. The fetal bovine serum can be utilized for clinical reasons at a volume of 0.1 mL and a pH of 7.29, as it is already capable of displaying morphological results.

Abstract

Introduction: Sleep disturbance is one of the most frequent complaints among menopausal women, strongly associated with hormonal decline and vasomotor symptoms. While pharmacological treatments such as hormone therapy and benzodiazepines are effective, they also carry significant risks, including cardiovascular events, cancer, and cognitive decline. This has led to growing interest in safe, non-pharmacological interventions such as yoga. Method: This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, encompassing publications from 2015 to 2025. Eligible studies included original research that investigated yoga interventions targeting sleep quality among menopausal or postmenopausal women. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental studies, and observational studies were considered if validated measures of sleep quality were reported. Discussion: Yoga interventions, commonly practiced 2–3 sessions per week for 8–12 weeks, consistently demonstrated improvements in subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, and overall well-being. Some studies also reported reductions in anxiety, depression, and vasomotor symptoms. The underlying mechanisms are likely multifactorial, including regulation of the autonomic nervous system, reduction of sympathetic activity, promotion of parasympathetic balance, and hormonal modulation. When compared with other non-pharmacological interventions such as Tai Chi and Qigong, yoga showed comparable benefits. Hormone therapy remains the most effective for vasomotor-related insomnia, yet yoga offers a safer long-term alternative with no reported serious adverse effects. Conclusion: Yoga is a safe, feasible, and effective non-pharmacological intervention to improve sleep quality in menopausal women and may serve as a complementary option alongside conventional treatments.

Abstract

Sebanyak 5 artikel memenuhi kriteria inklusi.
