Abstract

Oil spills are a significant concern in the waters surrounding Bintan, Indonesia primarily due to tankers releasing ballast water before anchoring at the nearby port of Singapore, particularly during the north wind season. The region's high cloud cover presents challenges for detection efforts. However, the utilization of Sentinel-1 Satellite imagery offers a promising solution. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of oil spills in North Bintan waters using data collected from the Sentinel-1A satellite between December 2023 and January 2024. The study area includes Semelur Hamlet in Berakit Village, Bintan Regency. The analysis of data consists of oil spill detection and oil content. The results that the wind speed was measured within the range of 2 - 3.8 m/s, while the current speed fell within the range of 0.12 - 0.24 m/s. Additionally, the oil content was found to be less than 1 mg/l. The analysis conducted on the acquisition of December 6 - 24, 2023 revealed the presence of oil spills in four distinct areas. The spill areas were measured to be 1109 m2, 346 m2, 4258 m2, and 1491 m2, respectively. The windrose diagram reveals that the prevailing wind originates from the north northwest, accounting for 16% of the total wind occurrences. The average wind speed within this direction ranges from 3.6 - 5.7 m/s. Notably, the highest wind speed recorded exceeds 11.1 m/s and is observed to come from the north. The relationship between the process of image acquisition and the windrose diagram elucidates the impact of wind on the dynamics of oil spill movement

Abstract

Microplastics are particles that have a size of <5 mm and their existence might be able to contaminate the biota in the aquatic environment, such as care fish. Caru fish was collected in the Dumai city fish landing base in September - December 2022 to determine the abundance of microplastics in caru fish. The method used in this study is a survey method; samples of caru fish were obtained from Fish Landing Base (PPI) Dumai, and the samples were analyzed for the microplastic content in the laboratory. The samples used were 90 caru fish divided into three size classes. The parameters measured included type of microplastic, microplastic abundance, microplastic colour and the relationship between care fish size and microplastic abundance. The abundance of microplastics from the three size class of fish shows that the size class 22.1-24 cm had a higher average abundance of microplastics with an average value of 5.7 particles/individual. The type of microplastics found in this study were fibre, film and fragment. The relationship between the length of the caru fish and the abundance of microplastics has not been influenced by the size of the carp fish

Abstract

The Dumai City area is one of the regions currently designated as an industrial zone, a transportation route, and a busy international port. This situation puts significant pressure on the marine waters of Dumai City due to the waste produced. The primary source of marine pollution comes from oil spills, whether from ship operations, offshore drilling, or ship accidents. Pollution from oil spills in the ocean is a significant source of marine contamination that has consistently been a focus of public attention. This study aims to analyze the total oil content, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Total Organic Matter (TOM), as well as the effect of total oil content on DO, BOD, and TOM. The survey method used in this research involves collecting data from DO, BOD, TOM, and oil content measurements. The total oil content in Dumai City waters ranges from 0.14485 – 0.30214 ppm. The total oil content below the threshold still supports aquatic biota and does not damage the ecosystem. The DO content in Dumai waters ranges from 3.6 to 6.8 mg/L, and some measurements are below the threshold required to support marine biota. The BOD content of Dumai waters ranges from 10 to 11.3 mg/L, meaning that biological activity is still within optimal limits. The TOM content ranges from 17.38 – 35.22 mg/L, which does not support the life of aquatic biota, and there is potential for organic material pollution
