Abstract

Indonesia pepper, contributing 11% of the U.S. market, is below Vietnam as a significant supplier and is followed by Brazil. Based on the growth rate of Indonesian pepper exports to the U.S. market, Indonesia is second after Vietnam. Indonesian pepper exports to the American market have limitations, and competition exists between the countries exporting pepper. The research used the export of a sort of whole black pepper. This study aims to determine Indonesian black pepper's competitiveness and demand position in the U.S. market. The performance of Indonesia's black pepper exports to the U.S. market was analyzed using the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) method, export product dynamics (EPD), and the almost ideal demand system (AIDS) method. The dependent variable is the share of Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, and India, and the independent variable is the price of pepper from the countries. The analysis results show that black pepper has comparative and competitive competitiveness. Indonesian black pepper has the highest expenditure elasticity, elastic price elasticity, and cross elasticity; it is a substitute for Vietnam and complementary to Brazil and India. Indonesian black pepper has good export performance and a high demand for imports, so Indonesia has the potential to increase exports by increasing the export volume of quality pepper at competitive prices, according to what the U.S. market wants.

Abstract

Lebong Regency is one of the areas in Bengkulu with very low beef cattle population covering only 0.189% of the total 161,000 heads. Although ongoing government and stakeholder initiatives have aimed to boost smallholder populations, the outcomes remain suboptimal. This study aimed to evaluate the potential and formulate strategies to increase the beef cattle population in Lebong Regency. It used a descriptive approach through surveys and interviews involving 40 participants, including 32 smallholder farmers and 8 experts from institutions supporting livestock development in the region. Secondary data from Statistics Indonesia supported the assessment of potential and challenges. Data were analyzed using a SWOT matrix, revealing the potential carrying capacity of 10,319 cattle heads, indicating an opportunity for livestock growth in Lebong Regency. The SWOT analysis positioned the strategy in quadrant III (0.33; -0.19), suggesting a turnaround approach. The recommended development strategy emphasizes enhancing knowledge of integrated technology through collaboration between coffee processing industry owners and rice/corn farmers producing agricultural waste. Additionally, utilizing government programs to increase knowledge, scaling up beef cattle farming, and strengthening institutional cohesion are key strategic actions.

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) systems frequently encounter low and fluctuating output voltages, which can significantly impede efficient energy utilization and necessitate more advanced power conversion solutions. Addressing this challenge, the study aims to develop a high-gain DC-DC converter topology that offers stable voltage regulation, making it suitable for PV applications. The proposed solution targets the essential need for substantial voltage boosting while maintaining reliable performance even under varying solar irradiance conditions. The core of the design is based on a Quadratic Boost Converter (QBC) integrated with Voltage Multiplier Cells (VMC), collectively referred to as QBC-VMC. This innovative configuration enhances the voltage gain capability compared to traditional converters. To ensure precise control of the output voltage, a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller is implemented. The system undergoes thorough analysis, including detailed modeling, simulation, and the design of its control structure, to optimize performance. The results demonstrate that the proposed converter can achieve a voltage gain of up to 12 times the input voltage. The PI controller effectively maintains a stable output voltage at approximately 600 V with a tolerable variation of ±0.7%. Additionally, the system exhibits an energy conversion efficiency approaching 81%, even under fluctuating irradiance conditions. This indicates a strong dynamic response and steady-state performance, essential for reliable PV operation. By integrating QBC-VMC with PI control, the proposed approach significantly enhances voltage stability and energy conversion efficiency. Overall, this system provides a promising solution for high-performance PV power systems, capable of delivering reliable power output under varying environmental conditions.

Abstract

Most of Indonesia's rice farming households are small-scale, with farming income equivalent to below the poverty line. Sources of income from outside the farm can be a complement to the low income obtained from farming. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effect of off-farm income on the technical efficiency of rice farming. This study employed secondary data and analyzed using the stochastic production frontier model, with corrections for the bias associated with the observed and unobserved variables first. This study showed that the education level of the head of the household had a significant positive effect on the opportunity to obtain off-farm income. Land area and fertilizer have a significant effect on increasing rice farming production. Rice farming in the household group without off-farm income has a relatively higher level of technical efficiency than the household group with off-farm income. Therefore, government policies regarding farmers' access to land and fertilizers are needed to increase rice production. Opportunities for farm households to obtain off-farm income will be even greater if policies enable them to obtain a better education.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of essential oils; however, its export competitiveness in the Chinese market has fluctuated over time. This study aims to analyze the level and dynamics of Indonesia’s essential oil export competitiveness compared to other major exporting countries in the Chinese market. The research uses secondary time-series data from 2011 to 2023 obtained from Trade Map. Competitiveness is assessed using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Dynamic Revealed Comparative Advantage (DRCA) methods. The findings reveal that Indonesia generally demonstrates strong competitiveness, except in 2011 when it was weak and in 2022 when it was moderate. Based on DRCA, Indonesia was classified as a “rising star” in 2011–2013 and 2017–2019, a “falling star” in 2013–2015, a “lost opportunity” in 2019–2021, and experienced a decline to the “lagging retreat” position in 2015–2017 and 2021–2023. These fluctuations are influenced by unstable production, limited product innovation, and quality standards that do not fully align with market requirements. To strengthen its competitiveness, Indonesia must enhance product quality, adopt technological innovations, and foster collaboration among stakeholders.
