Abstract

Abstract

Coastal areas and small islands in Indonesia, reaching approximately 17,000 islands, will be directly affected by increasing sea levels, seawater intrusion, and salinization. This paper provides insight into salinity and its effect to plant, saline-tolerant animal feed crops' characteristics, adaptation mechanisms, and some proposed strategies to deal with salinity issues. This research was conducted through literature study and data were analyzed descriptively. Salinity affects the photosynthesis process, thereby decreasing the net Photosynthetic Rate (Pn), the stomatal aperture, Fv/Fm (efficient quantum), and quantum yield (light intensity/rate of photosynthesis). Salt-stressed plants can be seen from the severity by measuring the levels of Cl and Na in the roots, leaves, and chlorophyll. Plant tolerance to salinity is divided into two groups: glycophytes that are tolerant of low salt levels and halophytes that are tolerant of high salts. Salinity inhibits cell enlargement and division, increases plant mass, and increases protein and nucleic acid production. The plant adapts to saline stress, including osmotic adjustment, stress protein, free radical oxidative species (ROS) removal, ABA synthesis, and cross-adaptation. Increasing the productivity of animal feed in saline areas could be achieved in various ways by modifying water, land, chemical and biological properties, and farmer habits.

Abstract

To increase shallot production in Indonesia is faced with the issue of the dichotomy between Java and outside Java. Data shows that more than 70% of shallot harvested area is on Java, even though it is only 17% of Indonesia's total agricultural area.  This research aims to identify factors that determine shallot production and measure the technical efficiency of shallot production and its determining factors. We used survey data from the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2014, which consisted of 2,860 input-output units of shallot production on Java and 940 outside Java. Using the stochastic frontier production function, it is found that production factors of land, labor, seeds, fertilizers and pesticides significantly determine shallot production in Java and outside Java. The marginal productivity of land, labor, seeds, fertilizers and pesticides in Java is higher than outside Java. The average technical efficiency score of production outside Java is higher than in Java. However, land productivity outside Java is lower than in Java. These findings indicate that the majority of shallot farming outside Java is already at its production frontier, whereas in Java only a small portion has reached its production frontier. Technical efficiency of production is determined by season and type of land, as well as farmers' membership in farmer groups, partnerships, and cooperatives. This conclusion implies that increasing shallot production outside Java requires new technology that can increase marginal input productivity. Technology to be developed is the use of true shallot seeds, accompanied by irrigation and agricultural institutions.

Abstract

Nowadays consumers tend to substitute their habits in consuming cow milk into soy milk since it has reliability on health issue, taste, and healthy lifestyle. Referencing to prior researches, health consciousness and main theory of planned behavior (TPB) factors including attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control significantly influence consumer purchase intention. Researchers aimed to analyze health consciousness influence toward consumer purchase intention to cow milk and soy milk and formulate managerial implications to escalate consumer purchase intention to cow milk and soy milk. This research was conducted in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) area from October 2023 until April 2024 with 300 respondents. Researchers used voluntary response sampling as sampling method. Analysis methods used by researchers were descriptive analysis, structural equation modelling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) analysis, and importance performance matrix (IPMA) analysis. Results showed that health consciousness doesn’t influence purchase intention to cow milk significantly yet influences purchase intention to soy milk significantly. Otherwise trust, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence purchase intention to both milks significantly. Furthermore, consumer purchase intention toward cow milk and soy milk can be escalated through improving performances of trust and subjective norms. For trust, producer needs to promote producer reputation, keep up the production standards, and design informative and attractive packaging. For subjective norms, producer needs to conceptualize informative and attractive advertising, conducting sales promotion, public relation, personal selling, and direct marketing.
