Abstract

The Church believed that her faith had social relevance. God, who is believed in, is responded to in concrete cultural and political situations. Therefore, the Church is no longer an isolated religious institution but integral to people's life experiences. Currently, the Indonesian nation is not only in a political crisis but also a crisis of political behavior. This crisis is exacerbated because the political elite has no shame in politics. Empirically, it is effortless to find examples of how there is no sense of shame because they have been guilty in society, and most prominently in the attitudes of political elites. It is no secret that many leaders and political elites are guilty of causing various crises, but when appearing in public, they do not show that they are guilty. Thus, this study aims to find the ethical values of the passion story of Jesus based on the Gospel of John. John presents the story of Jesus' passion for showing Jesus' empire as King through His "exaltation" on the Cross. Through this reading, leaders and public officials know and behave as leaders in front of the people. This research is a critical reading of the story of the passion of Jesus so that ethical points are found on how the political elite should act in the public sphere.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of "separate bed" in the concept of the unbreakable nature of a Catholic marriage. The Catholic Church in essence highly values the essential nature of marriage, which is one and indivisible. This also emphasizes that the Catholic Church does not want a divorce. The church only recognizes "bed separation" in the context of husband and wife who want to separate. The Code of Canon Law (Can. 1151-1155) is very clear and detailed what this “bed separation” means. In addition, "separate bed" is an opportunity for husband and wife who are separated to introspect each other. This research was conducted using a library research method which is descriptive in a Catholic Church Law perspective. From this research, We found the basic point of what the meaning of “separation of bed” in the Catholic Church is that distinguishes it from the road to divorce. In other words, separation in the Catholic Church will not eliminate the unbreakable nature of marriage, unless death separates it.Abstrak: Penelitian studi ini memiliki tujuan menelaah makna “pisah ranjang” dalam konsep sifat tak-terputuskannya Perkawinan Katolik.

Abstract

The Manggarai community is increasingly concerned about the erosion of their local wisdom, particularly the awareness of relationships with others, nature, and the Creator. This decline is reflected in the rise of gang fights, tribal conflicts, and natural disasters, leading to a loss of togetherness and responsibility. Despite this, the Manggarai possess valuable wisdom on living together peacefully and fairly, expressed through art, literature, social systems, rituals, and religious ceremonies. This study explores the ethics of responsibility within the Manggarai community, focusing on the Oke Dara Ta’a ritual, and draws on Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophical framework. The Oke Dara Ta’a ritual is performed when someone dies unnaturally—through violence, accidents, disasters, or fights—to remove bad luck and protect other family members. The Manggarai believe that Dara Ta’a results from disharmony with others, ancestors, and the Creator. Levinas’s philosophy asserts that ethics arise from encountering the “face” of the other, which inherently demands responsibility. His ideas provide a lens to understand the ethical responsibility embodied in the Oke Dara Ta’a ritual. This qualitative study uses interviews with traditional leaders and ritual practitioners, grounded in phenomenological philosophy. The research highlights the significance of Manggarai local wisdom in fostering social and ethical responsibility

Abstract

The research focuses on exploring the meaning of Emanuel Levinas' ethics of face in illuminating the immorality that occurs in war. For Levinas, humans are "being-for-the-other"; beings who exist in the world for others. Levinas proposes how "being-for-the-other" always has the nature to be responsible for the presence of other humans with sorge (care). On the other hand, humans often become power-hungry "animals", which can only be obtained if they conquer others, especially in this case, is war. Humans are increasingly showing a life of utter disregard for other human beings by constantly waging war. Therefore, exploring facial ethics and humanitarian responsibility according to Levinas' thought will find intersubjective attitudes that humans can internalize to realize other humans as existences who also have experiences and feelings, are valuable and precious. The method used in the research is qualitative method through literature study. This research found that face ethics gives intersubjective understanding to every human being. The contribution of this research is to understand that war is immorality; which is the destructiveness of humanity that violates the principles of intersubjectivity and humanitarian responsibility.

Abstract

This study focuses on examining Jurgen Habermas's concept of critical hermeneutics and its contribution to the understanding of religious life in Indonesia. Religious life today tends to be under attack by various ideologies and interests that have the potential to damage social relations between believers. Based on this background, this study asks the following questions: (1) How does Jurgen Habermas's concept of critical hermeneutics reveal the ideological interests behind authority and tradition? And (2) How relevant are these concepts to building an inclusive religious ethic in Indonesia? This research uses a literature review method with a critical hermeneutic approach. Analysis is conducted through critical-reflective interpretation of texts, exploring ideological dimensions, power relations, and communication distortions in religious practices. This approach is also enriched with discourse analysis to uncover hidden interests that hinder religious understanding. The results show that Jurgen Habermas's critical hermeneutics offers a relevant framework for developing a dialogical, rational, and inclusive religious ethic. This approach encourages communication free from domination, manipulation, and repression, while fostering critical awareness in the face of plurality. Thus, critical hermeneutics contributes to building a more harmonious, just, and tolerant religious life amidst the diversity of Indonesian society.
