Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how interactive communication strategies facilitate the implementation of multidimensional literacy (encompassing linguistic, cognitive, sociocultural, and developmental aspects) in inclusive classrooms, with a particular emphasis on language education and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (i.e., Quality Education). A qualitative case study was conducted in an inclusive elementary school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. Findings show that teachers applied adaptive strategies such as open-ended questions, paraphrasing, positive feedback, visual cues, and choice-based questioning, enabling both regular and special needs students to participate actively. These strategies enhanced sentence construction, reading comprehension, sociocultural awareness, and self-confidence by fostering meaningful dialogue and adaptive scaffolding. The study highlights that interactive communication is not merely supportive but central to equitable, holistic literacy and language education in inclusive contexts, contributing to inclusive and transformative education practices aligned with SDGs.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand what challenges encountered by English teachers and how they cope with the barriers, particularly in low-resource, non-technological settings. Using the PRISMA framework, this study conducted a systematic literature review to synthesize the twenty articles published between 2018 and 2024 from Scopus, Connected Papers and ERIC. This study identified eight major challenges which are: inadequate resources for learning, poor school infrastructure, lack of teaching media, overly teacher-centered pedagogy, heavy workload, insufficiency of prepared teachers, adaptation issues, and low levels of student motivation. To cope with these challenges, teachers applied six primary strategies which included development of teaching materials by hand, content simplification through local dialects, application of teacher-centered pedagogy, peer collaboration, curriculum improvisation to fit local context, and informal professional development activities. These results have noted the creativity and adaptability of teachers within constrained environments and underscore the necessity for situated educational policies. Moreover, the study contributes to a better understanding on the preservation of English instruction in rural settings and offers useful information to policy makers, educators, and other divisions which work towards resolving inequities in education.

Abstract

This study explores how readers construct meaning and form interpretations of the character Furukara Keiko in the translated novel Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata through a reader-response perspective. Furukara is portrayed as a woman with a “strange” disposition, socially alienated due to her deviation from normative gender expectations. Her refusal to pursue a conventional lifestyle—such as seeking a full-time job, marriage, or motherhood—invites a myriad of reader perceptions that reflect broader socio-cultural negotiations about identity and normality. Adopting a mixed-method approach (Sugiyono, 2020), this research combines content analysis with the theoretical framework of reader-response criticism as formulated by Iser (1978), Fish (1970), and Rosenblatt (1993). Data were collected through stratified random sampling of 400 Goodreads reviews, from which Indonesian-based 50 reviews were purposively selected for their expressive and reflective depth. The analysis draws on seven response strategies by Beach and Marshall in Iskhak (2015): engage, describe, explain, conceive, interpret, connect, and judge. Findings reveal that the most dominant strategy is engagement, indicating strong emotional identification with Furukara’s marginalization and social resistance. Readers often describe her life in their narratives, reimagine her conditions, and relate them to their experiences. The character mirrors and critiques societal norms, particularly concerning gendered expectations (Adawiyah & Hasanah, 2020). This study defines the mutual interaction between reader and text, stress that literary meaning is not fixed but co-constructed through affective, cognitive, and contextual engagements (Priskila, 2024; Purba, 2023). These insights contribute to the growing discourse on gender representation and reader agency in literature.

Abstract

This research study was aimed (1) to investigate the difference in students learning achievement. (2) To investigate the difference in the students learning motivation level. This study was a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group. The population consisted of all third year students in the second semester of academic 2015/2016 of the English Education Department at Champasack University, Laos consisting of 60 students as the sample. The data were collected using listening comprehension pretest, posttest and a questionnaire for students learning motivation. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The result of MANOVA indicated that (1) The students' learning achievement in listening increased significantly after learning with films, F = 4.961 with p = 0.030. (2) The students' learning motivation level increased significantly after they learned with films, F = 5.909 with p = 0.018, which is lower than 0.05. This study found a significant difference in listening achievement and learning motivation levels of the third year students.

Abstract

Teaching materials are significant items that are unique and specific. Therefore, the selections should be relevant to students proficiency. This research aimed (1) to disclose lexical density, readability, nominalizations, and modifiers in pedagogical texts as teaching materials, (2) to reveal the linguistic features functional roles on text for pedagogical demand, and (3) to attempt to suggest consideration for simplification on authentic text. This research employed qualitative content analysis. The data sources were 18 pedagogical texts from senior high school textbooks by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. Human instruments and a text analyser for the automatic computation were utilized for the analysis under Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) pilots. This research disclosed the appropriate text lexical density for senior high school students is a fairly difficult construction. Then, nominalizations within the texts are unpreventable and process nominalization is frequently used. The nominalization and the modifiers affect sentence complexities; the nominalizations function to condense information, collocate words, create cohesiveness, interfere with conciseness, and use as trans-categorization while modifiers are to add explicitness to nouns. The simplification considerations are by utilizing lexical density and readability algorithm, de-nominalization, measuring modifiers, and splitting substance of modifiers to increase text accessibility.
