Abstract

Scattergories game is a version of the category game that promotes broad word acquisition. This research aims to prove whether the use of the Scattergories game can develop vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Parigi. This research used a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: experimental and control groups. The population consisted of five seventh-grade classes. The test was administered twice as a pre-test and post-test to assess students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. Because the data were not normally distributed, the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test through SPSS version 24. This finding showed a difference in mean scores post-test of the control and experimental groups, where the mean scores of the control group were 78 and the experimental group were 85. The Mann-Whitney test showed that there was a significant increase in the experimental classes (Z = -1.975, p = 0.048). This result suggests that the Scattergories game effectively enhances vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students, making the learning process more engaging and impactful.

Abstract

Self-confidence plays a crucial role in second language learning, particularly in enhancing speaking ability. In many senior high schools in Indonesia, English is taught as a foreign language (EFL), and students often struggle with speaking due to low self-confidence. This study investigates the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability among eleventh grade students at MA Nurul Muttahidah Pinotu. Employing a quantitative research approach with a correlational design, the study involved 25 students as the total sample. The instruments used were a self-confidence questionnaire consisting of 20 items based on a Likert scale and a speaking test assessing five aspects: pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 24, including normality and linearity tests, followed by Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis. The results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.505, p = 0.010) between students’ self-confidence and their speaking ability. This finding suggests that the more confident students are, the better their speaking performance. However, the small sample size is a limitation of this study, and further research with larger samples is recommended. These results highlight the importance of fostering students’ self-confidence to improve speaking skills in EFL contexts, especially in underrepresented educational settings such as senior high schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Kaili folktales in enhancing students’ reading comprehension at SMPN 19 Palu. The research was motivated by students' difficulties in understanding narrative texts, reflecting low reading comprehension levels. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 43 eighth-grade students divided into an experimental group (n = 23) and a control group (n = 20). The experimental group was taught using Kaili folktales, while the control group used general folktales. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests consisting of multiple-choice and essay questions. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher average post-test score (71.04) compared to the control group (61.35). A Mann-Whitney test using SPSS 26 yielded a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference between the groups. The findings suggest that incorporating Kaili folktales into English instruction effectively enhances students’ reading comprehension.

The results showed that the mean score of the experimental group on the post-test (75) was higher than that of the control group (50). This was confirmed by calculations using the SPSS 26 version, where The significance value (Asymp. 2-tailed) is 0.000, which is smaller than the significance of 0.05; this indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. These findings suggest that through cartoon movies are an effective medium for improving students’ vocabulary mastery in English language teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of popular songs in teaching listening skills to eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Palu. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of two classes: an experimental group taught using popular songs and a control group taught using conventional methods. The research instrument was a listening comprehension test administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) the treatment. Data analysis used the Mann-Whitney U test to compare posttest scores between groups and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test to compare pretest and posttest scores within each group. The results revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p 0.05), with the experimental group achieving a higher posttest mean score (94.63) than the control group (85.66). The improvement in the experimental group was also greater than in the control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of popular songs is more effective than conventional methods in enhancing students’ listening skills.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to prove whether implementation of Peer Feedback effectively improve students’ writing skill. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The population involved all eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Bungku Tengah, totaling 277 learners. To determine the Experimental and Control groups, the researcher used cluster random sampling. The researcher used a descriptive text writing test to collect data in terms of pretest and posttest. However, only the experimental class received peer feedback treatment while the control group received other treatments. Organization, Content, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics were the focus of this study. The results demonstrated that once peer feedback was introduced, the experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test, with a mean score of 76.12 compared to 61.78. Meanwhile, analysis of the pre-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups’ average scores. In addition, the obtained significance value (2-tailed) was 0.001, which is lower than the standard level of 0.05. This suggests that the use of peer feedback has a statistically significant and meaningful effect on improving students’ writing skill. Consequently, peer feedback can be considered an advisable strategy for writing instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of students at SMAN 5 Palu regarding the impact of using song lyrics to improve English reading comprehension. This study focuses on the role of song lyrics in increasing reading motivation and the challenges faced by students in their use. Although reading comprehension is an essential skill, international assessment results such as PISA show that Indonesian students' reading literacy is still below the global average, causing students to often feel bored and have difficulty understanding conventional texts. This study used a descriptive qualitative design with 25 students from class X Merdeka 1 of SMAN 5 Palu selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through open questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results showed that students had positive perceptions of the use of song lyrics. Song lyrics increase learning motivation through a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and help improve vocabulary, contextual meaning comprehension, and grasping main ideas. Challenges found include the use of slang, figurative meanings, fast pronunciation, and distractions for some students. This study concludes that song lyrics are effective authentic material in EFL reading learning.
