Abstract

The use of black soldier fly (BSF) as a bioconversion agent has become an emerging breakthrough in waste processing. Organic wastes, such as household waste and livestock manure, can be used as a growth medium for BSF larvae and converted into favorable products. The average composting time of BSF larvae is around 12– 15 days, which is faster than that of microbes or earthworms (4–5 weeks). BSF shows potential as a feed and food ingredient because it has a high nutritional content, such as enzyme, chitin, medium-chain fatty acid, and antimicrobial peptides, and can be used as a functional food ingredient. From an economical perspective, the short composting period and the role of BSF as a feed and food alternatives can benefit producers and consumers. The safety aspects of BSF utilization, including microbial safety, chemical safety, and environmental safety, warrant clarification to ensure BSF safety. However, some challenges arise regarding the use of BSF larvae (BSFL) as a bioconversion agent, such as for heavy metal residues, pesticide residues, pathogens, and antimicrobial gene transmission and residues that require the best composting strategy for mitigation. The environmental safety of organic waste treated with BSFL has a good impact; therefore, this strategy can be used to reduce global warming. Research must focus on effectively and safely enhancing the cultivation and processing of BSF and its applications as a functional food. In conclusion, BSF is a profitable alternative for organic waste bioconversion in developed and developing countries.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Broiler; GMO; Kualitas daging; Pakan; Produksi telur   Abstract  Broiler, Layer and Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) are species of poultry that have become increasingly popular to raise due to their performance such as fast production, and ease of care, either for meat and egg producers in many Asian countries and worldwide. As poultry, they are often raised using corn (Zea mays) as the primary energy source in the ration. However, corn often faces problems involving arthropod pests such as the Asian Corn Borer Moth (Ostrinia furnacalis), and as such, agricultural engineering technology has developed many strains of transgenic corn that have been grown and bred to be resistant to these pests. This article aimed to determine the transgenic corn performance as feed, safety and nutritional equivalence on poultry (quails and chicken) for meat and egg producer. The review determined that across various studies, there were no significant differences between production parameters in the broiler, layer and quails fed a conventional non-GMO diet and entirely transgenic corn. This similarity was seen in both meat and layer types. Though, research still needs to be done to assess transgenic corn's effects on parameters of yolk composition and breast muscle composition. The study also observed that no transgenic genes and proteins remained after the slaughter of the poultry in the muscle and tissues, indicating the safety concerns of transgenic genes and proteins not being transferred from the corn to poultry. Abstract

Sheep meat plays an important role in accomplishing balanced and healthy nutrition as a source of protein, fat, and essential micronutrients such as zinc, iron, and vitamin B12.  The amino and fatty acid composition of meat in different breeds need to be assessed to characterize and determine the development prospects of sheep that produce healthy and good quality meat. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the phenotypic characteristics of the Sapudi and Cross Merino meat sheep including the carcass performance and meat qualities. We reared four Sapudi and four Cross Merino ewes in the same feed and environmental management for two months then slaughtered and analysed the carcass, non-carcasses and chemical meat properties. We used Bicep femoris muscle to perform proximate, amino acid, and fatty acid contents. An independent t-test was conducted to compared obtained data. Heart weight and protein content were higher in Sapudi sheep. Of the 51 fatty acids observed, we found 11 and 10 types of fatty acid in the Sapudi and Cross Merino meat, respectively. The fatty acid percentage of Sapudi meat tended to have higher value compared to Cross Merino. We also found that the two breeds have the same amino and fatty acid compositions.  The levels of glycine, arginine, serine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine and threonine were statistically higher in Cross Merino than Sapudi.  In conclusion, the non-carcass, crude protein, amino acid and fatty acid level were significantly different between Sapudi and Cross Merino

Abstract

Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati are important zoonotic parasites of dogs and cats. The increasing use of medicinal plants as anti-parasitic agents are attributed to its advantages like less side effects, with lower risk of anthelmintic resistance, and as cheaper alternatives. Although there are still no reports of anthelmintic resistance in Toxocara spp, the tendency of it happening should always be anticipated. This review summarized the in vitro and in vivo studies of the anti-Toxocara activity of plants, to enumerate the different plant extracts and the isolated active compounds in relation to their activity. In vitro studies investigated were primarily done in Toxocara larvae, mostly second-stage larvae, while in vivo studies were performed in animals mainly to assess the effect of the plant extracts on larval migratory behavior. Among the all plants described in this review, family Asteraceae was the most studied for their anthelmintic activity against toxocara species. The isolated active compounds with promising results were pyrethrin, kaurenes, palasonin, certain piperamides and curcuminoids, asarone, ascaridole, quercetin, thymohydroquinone (TQ), and secondary metabolites like flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and glycosides. However, The mechanism of action of each active ingredient of the plant as an anti-toxocara requires further research.

Abstract

Abundant coffee bean husk acquires an alternative source of fiber for livestock feed, but a high level of the crude fiber of it became an obstacle. Solid-state fermentation technology using lignocellulolytic fungi is known to be able to improve the nutritional quality of feedstuff that have high fiber content. Its mechanism is through the degradation of the lignocellulose fraction and enhance protein content. This study aimed to determine the nutritional quality of fermented coffee bean husk with a combination of fungi and yeast. The fermentation method used a solid-state fermentation consisting of 7 different inoculums, namely: P0: Unfermented coffee bean husk, P1: Aspergillus niger, P2: Saccharomyces cerevisiae, P3: Trichoderma harzianum, P4: Aspergillus niger + S. Cereviciase, P5: Aspergillus niger + Trichoderma harzianum, P6: Saccharomyces cerevisiae + Trichoderma harzianum and P7: Aspergillus niger + Saccharomyces. Cereviciase + Trichoderma harzianum. The nutritional quality of the fermented coffee bean husk was determined by proximate analysis, lignocellulolytic fraction, and digestibility. The data obtained were analyzed by ANOVA and followed by Tukey's post hoc test. The crude fiber content of fermented coffee bean husk (P1-P7) was lower than unfermented (P0). There was no significant difference among treatments in crude fat and protein. Treatment P3 has the highest total digestibility nutrient (70) and the lower crude fiber (15.03). A combination of Aspergillus niger and Saccharomyces cerevisiae reduce lignin content by about (4,16%). In conclusion, the fermented coffee bean husk can be utilized as animal feedstuff with higher nutritional quality than unfermented.
