Abstract

Kata kunci: Bondowoso; sapi; pakan; fermentasi; kulit kopi Abstract The issue of feed availability is one of the major challenges faced by the beef cattle farming community in Bondowoso District, East Java. The cut-and-carry feed collection system becomes particularly difficult during the dry season. Most of the agricultural land in Bondowoso District is used for coffee plantations. However, the utilization of coffee husk waste produced by the local coffee industry remains suboptimal. Coffee husks contain nutrients that have the potential to be used as animal feed. Nevertheless, the presence of antinutritional factors and low digestibility limit their effectiveness as feed. This community service initiative aims to enhance farmers' skills in providing nutritionally rich beef cattle feed by utilizing coffee husk waste through solid-state fermentation technology. The program began with a socialization session on complete feed for beef cattle, followed by training on how to process feed from coffee husks, and concluded with monitoring the implementation of feed usage for livestock. The results of the service activities show that the farming community was highly enthusiastic about participating in all aspects of the program, including socialization, training, and monitoring. Beef cattle that were fed complete feed made from coffee husk waste processed using solid-state fermentation (SSF) technology for four months showed a higher body weight gain of 144 kg, compared to those fed unprocessed coffee husk waste, which gained only 120 kg. Keywords: Bondowoso; cattle; feed; fermentation; coffee husk.

Abstract

Population of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the rumen of fattening livestock is relatively high and has the potential to be utilized. This study aimed to screen and identify LAB from the rumen as probiotic candidates. The research used rumen liquid from cattle, goats, and sheep collected from slaughterhouses in Bondowoso. The screening and identification processes were conducted at the Livestock Agroindustry Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jember. The screening included colony morphology, Gram staining, cell shape, catalase test, and Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas production ability. The final identification of potential probiotic bacterial candidates was based on their bile salt tolerance. The results showed that there were LAB candidates with 22 isolates (from sheep/OS), 19 isolates (from cattle/OC), and 18 isolates (from goats/OG). The bacterial colony shape included oval (2OS, 1OC), circular (11OS, 18OC, 12OG), irregular (7OS, 6OG), and spindle (2OS). Colony sizes ranged from small (0.5–1.2 mm: 7 OS, 9OC, 4OG), medium (1.2–3.0 mm: 7OS, 7OC, 7OG), to large (3.0–5.0 mm: 8OS, 3OC, 7OG), with the majority of colonies being white and cream-colored, and a minority being yellow. All bacteria were Gram-positive, with coccus (19OS, 14OC, 2OG) and bacillus (3OS, 5OC, 16OG) shaped cells. All samples were capable of producing CO2 gas, and 50% of the isolates possessed catalase enzymes. Based on bile salt tolerance tests, 15% of the isolates had a survival rate of over 50%. In conclusion, LAB from the rumen, particularly goats, were identified as potential probiotic candidates for further development.

Abstract

Plastic is the most popular and most widely used material as a raw material for making component objects such as food wrappers to automotives. Every day, humans produce plastic waste to meet their daily needs. The high amount of plastic waste produced can cause environmental pollution because plastic waste takes 10-100 years to decompose. One way to manage plastic waste into useful objects is to make ecobricks. Ecobrick is a way of handling plastic waste by tightly packing plastic into plastic bottles. Community empowerment in dealing with plastic waste is carried out through ecobrick making training for PKK women in Sumberjeruk Village, Kalisat District, Jember Regency. The long-term goal of this ecobrick training is to reduce plastic waste, recycle plastic waste, and community independence in the economic field as a new business opportunity to make a product that has high selling power. Based on the results of the ecobrick-making training activities, it can be seen that PKK women can make plant pots from ecobrick. In this training activity it is hoped that the community will not only be able to form ecobricks into pots but can also make other forms and can be used as new business opportunities for the community. Utilization of household waste for materials for making ecobrick can be useful in reducing the amount of waste in Sumberjeruk Village and can foster community creativity, especially mothers in Sumberjeruk Village by paying attention to the surrounding environment. In addition, the use of household waste in the manufacture of ecobricks can overcome the dangers of waste for the environment

Abstract

Stunting is a condition in which a child experiences failure to thrive due to lack of nutritional intake received from the womb. Generally, stunting sufferers are only seen when they are 2 years old. Indonesia has a high number of stunting sufferers and the government continues to strive to reduce this number. Jember Regency is one of the cities that has a high rate of stunting and IMR rates. This happens because there are still many people who lack knowledge about stunting and the importance of balanced nutrition, especially for toddlers at 1000 HPK. Apart from lack of knowledge, the cause of stunting can also be due to errors in parenting or there are financial problems in the family. The purpose of this activity is to provide basic knowledge about stunting and its prevention as well as provide knowledge about the intake of nutritious food to reduce the number of stunting sufferers. The method used is the action research method, where this activity begins with observation first and then continues by conducting socialization and giving a few gifts for the intended target. The expected result of this activity is that the targets can understand the importance of balanced nutritional intake for toddlers, especially during 1000 HPK and be able to correct errors in their parenting patterns to avoid stunting.

Abstract

Media usage for Black Soldier Flies Larvae (BSFL) growth has not been standardized yet, and many research has tried to elucidate different substrates to produce optimal BSFL growth. This study aimed to analyse the effect of different media with different metabolizable energy and nutrient content, such as tofu waste (high metabolizable energy), Azolla microphylla (moderate metabolizable energy), and layer manure (low metabolizable energy), on the yield and nutritional properties of 19-d-old Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). We grew BSFL from egg to 19-d-old larvae and analysed the BSFL yields by total and individual weight. Nutritional properties were analysed by using proximate, including water content, ash, crude protein, crude fiber, and crude fat. The results showed that the growth media of BSFL on tofu waste, Azolla microphylla, and layer manure showed significant differences in total weight and individual weight (p<0.05). Tofu waste produced the highest total weight (280,75±4,99 g). The nutrient content (water, ash, crude protein, crude fat, and crude fiber) of BSFL grown on tofu waste is the best for yield production. Tofu waste also showed excellent performance in nutrient content except for the percentage of protein compared to Azolla, which was the highest among media, and tofu waste as a growth media for BSFL produced lower protein content. The fiber content of media might influence the protein content. In conclusion, we suggest using high metabolizable energy for BSFL growth media to obtain good yield and high nutrient properties.
