Abstract

As physics is considered difficult to understand, prospective physics teacher programs face the challenges of providing adequate Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). Future teachers' self-efficacy is an essential factor affecting their teaching performance in the classroom. This study aimed to explore the self-efficacy of prospective physics teachers in Indonesia. Data were collected through a questionnaire with a Likert scale consisting of 18 statements and reasons for scoring. The questionnaire on self-efficacy was divided into the self-efficacy domain Content Knowledge (CK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), and PCK. The participants were 71 final-year students from 5 Physics Education Study Programs in Indonesia. According to the results, the total self-efficacy score of prospective teachers in physics was 6.98, which falls into the high category. In the CK, PK, and PCK domains, self-efficacy was 6.91, 7.06, and 6.93, respectively, in the high category. An in-depth analysis of students who responded in the low category showed that prospective teachers with low self-efficacy tend to be unsure that they have taught well. They believe that they have not fully mastered physics material and the characteristics of diverse students. Also, they have not gained significant teaching experience. According to these results, teacher education institutions must re-evaluate what learning activities can increase prospective teachers' self-efficacy in teaching and their teaching opportunities.

Abstract

This service activity is carried out using an asset-based community development (ABCD) approach, strengthening participants' potential for responding to change. The training participants were 35 elementary school teachers in Samarinda City. Training activities were conducted at SD Negeri 007 Samarinda Ulu, Samarinda City. This activity was carried out on Saturday, July 29, 2023. The activities involved providing training to strengthen teacher competencies by explaining the application of change management in dealing with curriculum changes. Data on training outcomes were obtained through the Teacher Attitudes Towards Change Scale (TATCS) questionnaire and questions regarding participants' perceptions of the training. Participants' answers were analyzed using keywords and word co-occurrence analyses. The training strengthened teacher competence in the era of an independent curriculum by increasing teacher belief in the importance of curriculum change, confidence in applying the Merdeka curriculum, and support for curriculum change. These results indicate the urgency of conducting similar training periodically to strengthen teacher competence in the adaptation process using an independent curriculum.

Abstract

Pre-service physics teachers (PSPTs) should have an established argumentation skill, a recognized skill in 21st-century education, to support learning. In line with this, the study explored the argumentation skills of PSPTs using an argumentation framework, Toulmin’s argument pattern (TAP), to provide a clear view of the argumentation skills of the 39 PSPTs who were involved in a four-meeting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) project. The study employed a mixed method research design in which the quantitative portion investigated the categories of TAP aspects, and the qualitative portion focused on exploring the argumentation patterns of the PSPTs. The data for this study was derived from the STEM project worksheets answered by the pre-service teachers. Quantitative analysis revealed PSPTs' argumentation aspect to be high regarding the claim aspect (97.44%) and data aspect (94.87%). Meanwhile, the warrant aspect (53.85%) is moderate, backing (20.51%) is low, and the rebuttal aspect (2.56%) is deficient. On the other hand, the qualitative analysis showed that PSPTs make four argumentation patterns: claim data (C-D); claim, data warrant (C-D-W); claim, data, warrant, backing (C-D-W-B); and claim, data, rebuttal (C-D-R). Considering TAP, quantitative and qualitative findings imply that PSPTs' argumentation skills still need to be developed, particularly on low-level aspects and in constructing a solid argument following the claim, data, warrant, backing, and rebuttal pattern

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how preservice physics teachers think about the role that scientists play in the teaching and learning of physics. Our participants were 33 preservice physics teachers in their first year participating in a scientist partnership program through online meetings. Participants' responses were collected through an essay questionnaire, and the result was analyzed with co-occurrence network analysis. Our research shows that preservice physics teachers have a positive perspective on scientists. The primary role of a scientist is related to a person with sufficient knowledge and opinion about physics. Their role is also related to the experiment and research result. Moreover, their innovation and discovery of new physics-related things also became their central role. After preservice physics teachers interact with scientists, they have higher motivation to learn physics. Our findings suggest that the activity facilitating interaction with professional scientists must be encouraged during the preservice physics teacher program.
