Abstract

First-year science pre-service teachers are a vital future generation dealing with various education systems, not least of which is the curriculum. This study aims to understand how first-year science pre-service teachers perceive the curriculum. This qualitative study probes those conceptions through metaphor analysis of responses from 104 Indonesian first‑year science pre‑service teachers. Participants supplied a single metaphor and a brief rationale; 57 unique metaphors survived screening and were grouped into five conceptual categories—Guidance, Foundation, Dynamism & Adaptability, Essential & Sustaining, and Complexity & Challenge. The most frequent metaphors included water, map, and sun, signalling an overall optimistic and functional view of the curriculum. While most metaphors framed the curriculum positively—as an indispensable guide or life‑support system—some acknowledged its intricacy and the effort required to navigate it. Findings suggest that optimism may stem from limited first‑hand experience with curriculum implementation, contrasting with practising teachers who often regard curriculum change as problematic. The implications of this study for teacher education programs include the need to foster critical and practical curriculum literacy from the start of training. In addition, by mapping how pre-service science teachers in Indonesia structure their curriculum, this study provides teacher education programs with a concrete reference point to prepare them for the tumultuous curriculum changes they will face as professional teachers.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia’s dependence on imported resistors must be addressed. Producing domestic resistors and using cheaper, more efficient materials is one way to reduce it. The purpose of this study was to determine the specific resistances of carbon film resistors produced from several natural materials. The carbon film resistors were made from 4 different charcoal materials: wood, coconut shells, banana peel, and durian peel charcoals. The fine natural charcoals were put into straws with different cross-sectional areas and lengths. The resistance was measured using a digital multimeter, and the specific resistance was subsequently calculated. The highest specific resistance was obtained by wood charcoal of 8.68x106Ωm, then followed by coconut shell charcoal, durian peel charcoal, and banana peel charcoal, which were 7.23x106Ωm, 4.91x106Ωm, and 4.37x106Ωm, respectively. Based on this research, wood, coconut shell, banana peel, and durian peel charcoals have the potential to be used as alternative materials to replace carbon film resistors.

Abstract

This study investigates first-year science pre-service teachers’ abilities and perspectives on PISA questions, addressing Indonesia's low PISA rankings and challenges in teacher preparation. A total of 153 first-year students from four programs at Mulawarman University (mathematics, biology, physics, and computer education) participated. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were collected through validated PISA test instruments, while qualitative insights were drawn from open-ended responses. The results showed no significant differences in PISA scores by gender or study program, but significant differences emerged when comparing first-year students to third-year students and professional teachers, with first-year students scoring lower. Qualitative findings revealed themes such as the cognitive challenges posed by PISA questions, their ability to foster critical thinking, unfamiliarity with the format, and their real-world relevance. Despite difficulties, many participants found the questions engaging and valuable for developing analytical skills. These findings highlight the need to incorporate PISA-style assessments in teacher education programs to enhance higher-order thinking and better prepare pre-service teachers for international standards in education.

Abstract

Twenty-first century education requires critical, creative, and solution-oriented thinking skills to address global issues such as environmental problems and the energy crisis. One approach that supports these skills is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) integrated with the Engineering Design Process (EDP). This study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility of ESD-EDP–based teaching materials on the topic of alternative energy in senior high school physics learning. This research is a type of Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE model, limited to the Analyze, Design, and Development stages. The Analyze stage included learning outcomes and student needs analysis, the Design stage produced the instructional framework, and the Development stage resulted in teaching materials validated by two subject matter experts, two media experts, and evaluated through the responses of 23 tenth-grade students. Validation results indicated very high feasibility with scores of 94% (content), 93% (presentation), 84% (language), and 92% (graphic design). Student responses averaged 88%, categorized as very good. Thus, ESD-EDP–based teaching materials are considered highly valid and feasible for senior high school physics learning on alternative energy topics.

Abstract

As physics is considered difficult to understand, prospective physics teacher programs face the challenges of providing adequate Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). Future teachers' self-efficacy is an essential factor affecting their teaching performance in the classroom. This study aimed to explore the self-efficacy of prospective physics teachers in Indonesia. Data were collected through a questionnaire with a Likert scale consisting of 18 statements and reasons for scoring. The questionnaire on self-efficacy was divided into the self-efficacy domain Content Knowledge (CK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), and PCK. The participants were 71 final-year students from 5 Physics Education Study Programs in Indonesia. According to the results, the total self-efficacy score of prospective teachers in physics was 6.98, which falls into the high category. In the CK, PK, and PCK domains, self-efficacy was 6.91, 7.06, and 6.93, respectively, in the high category. An in-depth analysis of students who responded in the low category showed that prospective teachers with low self-efficacy tend to be unsure that they have taught well. They believe that they have not fully mastered physics material and the characteristics of diverse students. Also, they have not gained significant teaching experience. According to these results, teacher education institutions must re-evaluate what learning activities can increase prospective teachers' self-efficacy in teaching and their teaching opportunities.

Abstract

Medical Physics is a branch of physics application that is developing very rapidly. Therefore, the contextualization of Medical Physics is crucial for future physics teachers. This research aims to implement Student-Teacher-Scientist Partnerships (STSP) in Medical Physics and explore students' perceptions of the learning experience through this program. STSP in this research involved prospective physics teachers as students, lecturers in medical physics courses as teachers, and medical physicists as scientists. The benefits of this research are to provide a learning experience of medical physics directly from experts (medical physicists) as a provision for prospective physics teachers to strengthen their knowledge of medical physics content and how to teach it, and to be a recommendation for learning strategies that support contextual physics learning. Implementing STSP in medical physics courses includes planning, implementation, and evaluation activities for one semester of lectures; lectures by the foremost scientists were held in 7 meetings (1 meeting = 2 x 60 minutes). The planning stage includes activities to equalize perceptions between scientists and related lecturers. The course was primarily student-centred, with case study discussions conducted online via Zoom meetings. The scientists were located in East Java Province, Indonesia, while the teachers and students were in East Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The evaluation stage was carried out by exploring students' perceptions of the program implementation, the results of which can later be used as a reference for the continuation of the program implementation. Results indicated that STSP activities facilitated easier comprehension of medical physics, increased interest in further study, and highlighted connections between course topics and secondary school curriculum.
