Abstract

In today’s increasingly interconnected world, promoting multicultural awareness has become essential, especially in educational settings. Language education offers a unique platform to foster this awareness, as language and culture are deeply intertwined. However, many language programs focus primarily on linguistic skills, overlooking the cultural dimensions that help students appreciate and navigate cultural diversity. This research aims to examine the role of language education in enhancing students’ understanding of multiculturalism, specifically through curricula that incorporate cultural perspectives and foster intercultural competence. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining surveys and interviews with 200 language learners and 50 educators across various educational institutions. Quantitative data from the surveys measured participants' perceptions of multicultural awareness, while qualitative data from the interviews provided deeper insights into how language education influences students' cultural understanding. Both methods were essential to capturing the complex relationship between language learning and multicultural awareness. The findings indicate that students exposed to culturally enriched language curricula showed a higher level of interest in cultural topics and a greater openness toward diverse perspectives. Educators observed that students became more engaged when cultural content was integrated into lessons, improving their overall language proficiency and intercultural skills.

Abstract

This research delves into the complexities surrounding the integration of migrants in Medan's urban environment, highlighting the obstacles they face in social adaptation, their contributions to the local economy, and the rising socio-economic frictions. The study indicates that cultural disparities, resistance from local populations, and the prevalent urban individualism impede smooth social integration. Migrants often retreat into informal networks as a coping mechanism against exclusion, which, while providing safety, also reinforces societal divisions. Economically, migrants significantly impact the informal sector, driving small-scale entrepreneurial activities, yet their progress is hindered by challenges such as inadequate financial resources, legal recognition, and insufficient social safeguards. Additionally, the competition for low-paying jobs between migrants and locals fuels tension, further entrenching economic disparities. These issues are aggravated by a lack of inclusive urban planning and policies. The study advocates for proactive policy measures aimed at fostering cross-cultural engagement, enhancing migrant business sustainability, and ensuring equal access to resources, infrastructure, and social protection to ensure a more inclusive and equitable urban future.

Abstract

Fire risks in disaster-prone areas are increasing due to climate change and anthropogenic activities, such as illegal land clearing and weak law enforcement, especially in Indonesia, Brazil, and Australia. This study uses a qualitative approach with literature review methods and thematic content analysis to explore the dynamics of social transformation and managerial strategies in fire management through a comparative cross-case study. Social transformation is driven by citizen participation and local actors integrating local knowledge with modern technology, such as the Masyarakat Peduli Api program in Indonesia that reduced fires by 40% and "FireWise" in Australia that accelerated collective awareness. However, conflicting interests, such as plantation expansion, and weak institutional structures hinder effectiveness, especially in Indonesia and Brazil. Co-management and CBFiM strategies have proven to be more adaptive than centralized technocratic approaches, which often fail in Sub-Saharan Africa. Responsive managerial institutions, such as in Australia, support inclusive policies, while hierarchical systems in Latin America hinder adaptation. Community resilience depends on citizen empowerment, equitable resource distribution, and collaborative governance, making social transformation and community-based approaches key to sustainable fire management.

Abstract

In the digital age, adolescents in DKI Jakarta Province, Indonesia, are experiencing a transformative shift in their lifestyles, characterized by the pervasive influence of digital technologies. This research aimed to comprehensively investigate the multifaceted impact of digital lifestyles on the health of adolescents, with a specific focus on social media abuse, physical inactivity, and psychological well-being. Through a mixed-methods approach encompassing surveys and interviews, data from 500 adolescents were collected and analyzed. The findings revealed that digital lifestyles have become integral to the lives of adolescents, with social media use averaging 3.5 hours per day. However, this extensive use has led to concerning issues, including cyberbullying experiences among 18% of participants and feelings of inadequacy in 42% due to social comparison. Additionally, physical inactivity was prevalent, with only 38% meeting the recommended daily physical activity guidelines. These behaviors were associated with various health implications, such as poor sleep quality and eye strain. Psychological well-being also bore the brunt of digital lifestyles, with 32% of adolescents reporting symptoms of anxiety and 28% experiencing symptoms of depression. Despite these challenges, self-esteem levels remained moderate to high for most participants.

Abstract

Social media has become an important part of everyday life, especially for teenagers. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok are not only communication platforms but also places where social identities are built and maintained. Previous studies have shown that social media can impact in various ways, both positive and negative, on teens' social relationships. This research was conducted with the aim of measuring how social media has changed the number and types of social interactions compared to conventional face-to-face interactions. Apart from that, it is also to see how personality, level of social media use, and family social support can influence teenagers' social media. The method used by researchers in researching the Influence of Social Media on Adolescent Social Relationships: A Longitudinal Study is to use a quantitative method. The data obtained by researchers was obtained from the results of distributing questionnaires. The distribution of questionnaires carried out by researchers was carried out online using Google From software. The results of data acquisition will also be tested again using the SPSS application. From the research results, it can be seen that this research is expected to be a basis for further research on the relationship between technology and social development in the digital era. Additionally, the results can help parents, educators, and policymakers make better plans to help teens use social media in healthier and more beneficial ways. From this research, researchers can conclude that longitudinal studies show that the impact of social media on teenagers' social relationships is very diverse and complex, so it requires a more considered approach, both the benefits and risks of the influence of social media on teenagers' social relationships.

Abstract

Intergenerational solidarity has become a critical issue in post-industrial societies where demographic shifts, such as aging populations and declining birth rates, are reshaping social structures. The traditional bonds between younger and older generations are being challenged by economic, technological, and cultural transformations. Understanding how these changes impact intergenerational relationships is essential for maintaining social cohesion and addressing the needs of diverse age groups. Despite its importance, there is limited research on how post-industrial dynamics affect intergenerational solidarity. This study aims to explore the sociological dimensions of intergenerational solidarity in post-industrial societies. The research focuses on understanding how economic pressures, technological advancements, and shifting cultural norms influence the relationships between different generations. By examining these factors, the study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that support or weaken intergenerational bonds in contemporary society. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews with individuals from various age groups, as well as focus group discussions. The study also incorporates secondary data analysis of demographic and socioeconomic trends in post-industrial countries. The data were analyzed using thematic coding to identify key patterns and factors influencing intergenerational solidarity. The findings reveal that while economic and technological changes pose challenges to intergenerational relationships, strong cultural and familial values continue to play a vital role in maintaining solidarity. The study concludes that fostering intergenerational solidarity requires policy interventions that address these disparities while promoting mutual understanding and support between generations.
