Abstract

Blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is the dominant catch in Betahwalang, Demak, and the most important export fish commodity, particularly to USA. The high demand for this crab has been promoting an excessive fishing effort, causing a decrease in the crab's natural stock. This study aims to investigate the biological condition of P. pelagicus on the northern coast of Central Java and assess the crab stock exploitation status in this study area. Carapace width, body weight, Gonad Maturity Stages (GMS), and sex of crab samples were collected from the fishers and collectors landing sites or meeting points. This study employs a simple random sampling technique with no replacement. This study revealed that the maximum carapace width of female crabs was 56-164 mm, and the estimated carapace width at first maturity (Lm) was 98.2 mm. The relationships between carapace width and body weight between male and female crabs indicated positive and negative allometric growth patterns. During this assessment, the P. pelagicus stock indicated an 'over-exploited’ status, with an LB-SPR parameter of 19 percent and an exploitation rate (E) of 0.66. Management measures such as minimum legal size, reduced effort, and open-close areas and seasons should be implemented to achieve sustainable use of the crab fishery. Keywords:Blue swimming crabFishing gearDemak watersCarapace lengthSpawning potential ratio

Abstract

The effectiveness of the artificial lights on fishing activity with a fixed lift net is significant influences on the success of fishing operations. The used of color and intensity must be adjusted to the preferences, response and behavior of the target fish, due to the fish can be more quickly attracted and concentrated in the catchable area. The development of LED technology as an energy-saving lamp has a great opportunity to be applied as a fishing lamp for fixed lift net fisheries. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of low power LEDs as a fishing lamp based on fish behavioral response. The study was conducted on a research field laboratory that was built in the waters of the Banten Bay in July - August 2018. Test fish were collected from catches of the guiding barrier around the research vehicle. Data on response and behavior of fish to fluorescent lights, blue, green and white LEDs were recorded using 360 ° sonar and side imaging sonar. The results showed the green LEDs had better effectiveness in attracting, focusing and concentrating fish in the main zone than other types of lights. The fish gather more quickly, form groups and have a stable and consistent swimming pattern in the main lighting zone. Green LED is more appropriate to be used as a fishing lamp on fixed lift net fishing with an optimum intensity range of 4-20 μW cm².Keywords: Light, Intensity, Optimum, Response, BehaviorABSTRAKEfektivitas lampu yang digunakan pada proses penangkapan dengan bagan tancap sangat berpengaruh terhadap keberhasilan operasi penangkapan ikan. Abstract

The response of eel fish (Anguilla bicolor) glass eel stadia to different light is fundamental knowledge for developing fishing methods and conserving fish resources. The study aimed to describe how glass eel fish react to different types of light. In the laboratory, glass eels were observed responding to red, blue, and white LED light versus no light as controls. Glass eels ranging in size from 4.0 to 6.1 cm and weighing up to 0.28 g were caught in the Pelabuhanratu estuary of the Cimandiri River. Observations were made for 31 days, beginning five days after the glass eel was captured. The Mann Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to describe differences of the glass eel's response to light. Observations showed that glass eels responded more to dark zones with values above 80% when compared to zones given red, blue, and white LED light. The percentage of fish in red LED lights was 23±0.22% higher, with the number of fish on blue LED lights by 10±0.21% and white LED lights 8±0.15% (p<0.05, Kruskal-Wallis). The difference in response to light can be used for glass eel catching applications, especially lamps for eel fish aids and eel conservation to create fishing zones and eels. Keywords: Anguilla bicolor, eel behavior, glass eel, LED light, response to light

Abstract

Lights are common supporting tool in purse seine fishing in Indonesia. Currently, lamps on purse seines use mercury and metal halide (MH) which require very high electrical power. Therefore, there is a need for an effective underwater light technology alternative with low electric power. The aim of this research is to design a portable underwater lamp (PUL) which can be controlled remotely to support fishing operations. The design engineering process in creating the PUL includes light and buoy construction, temperature testing, light distribution, waterproofing, and motion testing. The results show that the PUL design enables the tools to be controlled remotely. The average temperature of the lamp on the PUL is 40 ⁰C, this temperature is lower than the MH lamp which reaches 250 ⁰C. The light spreads evenly at an angle of 360⁰ to the horizontal and 180° to the vertical. Meanwhile, the results of the lamp motion test showed that the lamp was watertight and highly stable. Abstract

Pot fisheries are one of the dominant activities of capture fisheries in the Penaah waters of Lingga, Riau Archipelago. This study aims to determine the effect of red LED lamp attractors on the fish catches of pots and identify the fish species. This study was conducted in the waters of Pena'ah Village, Senayang District, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands, using an experimental method. Data were collected from 18 pots for 18 days. There were three treatments, namely pot without using bait as a control, pot with red LEDs light, and pot with red LEDs light and bait, in which a total of six units of pots on each treatment. The pots caught 18 groupers during the study, of which nine individuals were captured by the pot with a red LED and bait, five individuals by the pot with a red LED pot, and four individuals without bait. The effectiveness analysis showed that the pot with red LED and bait was the highest (50%), the pot with red LED had a value of 28%, and the lowest was trapped without bait with an effectiveness value of 22%. The total catches of the pot based on the economic fish showed that adding a red LED attractor gave more types of catch than control. The red LED attractor is expected to be a solution to increase the effectiveness of the pot.

Abstract

Blue light-emitting diode (LED) lights have been tested as a potential tool in a blue swimming crab collapsible pot at the laboratory level. However, field-scale trials have not yet been conducted to confirm their effects on pot catches. This study aims to determine the effects of blue LEDs on catch composition and the effectiveness of catching the main target of crab (Portunus pelagicus). A fishing trial was conducted in Brondong, Lamongan waters to examine the influence of blue LED lights on crab catches. A total of 54 pots were deployed, consisting of 18 pots with fish bait (U) as control, 18 pots with blue LED light (L), and 18 pots with a combination of fish bait and blue LED (LU). The results showed that the LU treatment yielded the highest number of species, with a total of 13 species, followed by the U treatment, with 10 species, and the L treatment, with 9 species. The LU treatment had the highest catch of 48 fish (3,718 g), followed by U with 43 fish (3,448 g) and L with 5 fish (208 g). Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between the LU and U (control) treatments in terms of both catch number and weight. The highest catchable width distribution in treatment U was 88%, while the highest catchable weight distribution in treatment LU was 75%. The analysis of crab-catching effectiveness analysis showed that the LU treatment had the highest average effectiveness of 13%, followed by the U treatment at 11%, and the lowest was the L treatment at 1%. In conclusion, LED lights do not affect the catch, however, adding LED lights to the bait can increase the number of species caught, the number of individuals, the weight of the catch, and the effectiveness of catching kingfish (P. pelagicus).
