Abstract

This article re-examines Javanese Sufism through the lenses of hierarchy, determinism, and free will, adding an explicit economic-political dimension often absent from earlier studies. Drawing on participant observations in three pesantren, semi-structured interviews, and textual analysis of classical and Javanese scholarship, the analysis showed how charismatic teachers and guides converted spiritual authority into material patronage networks, while disciples negotiated between Jabarī rhetoric and pragmatic agency. Two ideal types emerged: an ascetic current that framed free will as self-discipline and distance from power and a common, devotional current that sacralized the submission of the self through collective dhikr and pilgrimage economies. These two approaches can explain Sufism’s success in spreading Islam in Java and its current traction among economically marginal groups. By linking doctrinal debate with money flow, the study extends current scholarship on religion and social change and provides a framework for assessing governance and accountability in Sufi institutions. Sufi institutions are advised to adopt transparent budget disclosure and participatory decision-making so that charismatic authority is balanced by measurable good governance safeguards.

Abstract

Abstract

Morals are the primary foundation for students' character in Islamic boarding schools, but modern challenges, such as globalization and the development of information technology, may weaken the internalization of moral values. In this case, the dawn halaqah activity at the Darul Ilmi Banjarbaru Islamic Boarding School is a vital strategy to instill moral values through direct experience, material appreciation, and the example of the supervisors. This research aims to examine the process of internalizing moral values through dawn halaqah as a medium for students' character development. The approach used is a phenomenological qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with ustaz, pesantren administrators, and students, as well as participatory observation and documentation. Data analysis is carried out inductively through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that dawn halaqah plays a significant role in shaping the attitudes and behaviors of students, including honesty, tawadhu’, responsibility, patience, discipline, tolerance, and emotional control, thereby creating a harmonious and conducive pesantren environment. The internalization process occurs through regular habituation, spiritual reflection, and the example of the supervisor, strengthening spirituality and building students' emotional and social maturity. These findings confirm the effectiveness of routine religious activities as a medium for character development and show that a hands-on and exemplary approach can strengthen the internalization of moral values. The implications of this research can serve as a basis for developing character education strategies in other Islamic boarding schools and religious education institutions, as well as guide teachers in designing activities that are more contextual, systematic, and oriented towards the formation of a complete character. The uniqueness of this study lies in the discovery that the intensity of student involvement in the dawn halaqah is a key factor that directly accelerates the internalization of moral values. This finding has not been widely reported in previous research.

Abstract

This article examines colonial agrarian politics in Eastern Java following the enactment of the Agrarische Wet of 1870, focusing on the effects of land taxation policies on rural social inequality and on the interpretation of Sarip Tambak Oso’s actions as a form of popular social resistance to the colonial agrarian order. Employing the historical method within a historical, sociological approach, through heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiographical stages, the analysis is grounded in Ralph Linton’s role theory and James C. Scott’s theory of everyday resistance. The study advances three principal findings. First, post-1870 colonial agrarian policy in Java did not constitute a liberating form of agrarian liberalism; rather, it established a hierarchical and exploitative land-tenure regime through the doctrine of domein verklaring. Second, colonial land taxation functioned as a mechanism of power that reproduced rural social stratification, intensified economic inequality, and accelerated the proletarianization of smallholders. Third, within this structurally unequal agrarian context, Sarip Tambak Oso, popularly remembered as a “thief for the people”, can be understood as embodying a form of moral-economic social resistance that challenged colonial hegemony through symbolic and redistributive action. Sarip represents subaltern agency, underscoring that colonial conflict in Java was fundamentally rooted in struggles over land, taxation, and rural social justice. Theoretically, this article argues that colonial agrarian policy produced structural domination, while Sarip Tambak Oso’s resistance expands the analytical scope of everyday resistance and role theory as forms of subaltern political praxis.
