Abstract

ABSTRACT Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders affecting dentists and their ability to work. Prolonged work with repetitive flexion and extension of the wrist position and high force may increase the risk of CTS. Exposure to various individual factors (gender, age, work duration, work experience, body mass index), wrist position, and handgrip strength during daily practice may also trigger CTS. To determine whether individual factors, wrist position, and handgrip strength were associated with CTS incidence in dentists. A case-control study in the population of the epidemiological study area. Dentists practicing at the community health center in Tangerang, Banten, agreed to complete the informed consent form. The total population of this present study in the forty-four community health centers in Tangerang was sixty-seven participants. Two participants were excluded due to a history of arthritis and diabetes mellitus. Therefore, only sixty-five participants who met the inclusion criteria were included. The assessment included observation of wrist position, handgrip strength, body mass index, and individual questionnaires (gender, age, work duration, and work experience). The association between these variables and CTS was then analyzed using the chi-squared test. The distribution of CTS among dentists showed that eighteen participants complained of CTS, while forty-seven participants did not. In a case group, the majority of participants complaining of work-related CTS symptoms were female (94.40%). We found that CTS sufferers were over 35 years of age (61.10%), had more than 9 years of work experience (61.10%), and had less than 6 hours of work duration (61.60%). Whereas, 100% of the participants performed wrist position at risk for CTS, 77.80% had weak handgrip strength, and 50% were obese based on body mass index compared to the control group at 80.90%, 4.30%, and 2.10%, respectively. The Chi-square test showed a significant level of wrist position, handgrip strength, and BMI against CTS. CTS is a disease associated with a dentist's wrist position, handgrip strength, and body mass index during dental practice. Keywords: Dentist, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Wrist Position, Handgrip Strength, Body Mass Index

Abstract

Background: Previous research studies have found the persistence of various COVID-19 symptoms even after the patient tested negative on a PCR test; this incident is now known as long COVID. These long COVID symptoms are reported to appear in the oral cavity including long COVID effects on periodontal disease, as both long COVID and periodontal disease release similar proinflammatory cytokines such as Acute phase proteins, CRP, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and IFN-g. Purpose: This study aims to show periodontal-disease severity-frequency distribution in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID and in non-COVID-19 patients. Methods: Patients' secondary data in the Periodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry at Trisakti University Dental Hospital (n=40) consisted of 20 samples from COVID-19 survivors who experienced long COVID and 20 samples from the non-COVID-19 group selected according to the inclusion criteria. Afterward, the data was recapitulated and processed into a research report. Results: The distribution percentage of generalized gingivitis was highest in non-COVID-19 patients, while generalized periodontitis was highest in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID. Based on periodontitis staging and grading methods, it is not proven that long COVID increases the severity of the periodontitis. Conclusion: This research shows that the distribution of gingivitis in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID has not increased. Meanwhile, the distribution of general periodontitis increased in survivors with long COVID. However, there was no increased severity of periodontitis based on the staging and grading method of periodontitis in the COVID-19 survivors with long COVID.

Abstract

This research aims to describe algebraic thinking skills in two-variable linear equation systems material through the steps of the Creative Problem Solving learning (CPS) learning model using worksheets. The research subjects were students of SMP Negeri 02 Sembawa class VIII-7 in the 2023/2024 academic year. The type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data collection techniques are written tests and interviews. Indicators of algebraic thinking skills include indicators at generational, transformational and meta-global level activities. After implementing CPS in learning, the test results showed that the percentage of students' algebraic thinking skills for generational activities in question number one was 48% and number two was 89%. For transformational activities, the percentage of students who were able to achieve them was 38% for number one and 38% for number two. Meanwhile, for meta-global level activities, the percentage of students who were able to achieve them was 45% for number one and 82% for number two. It can be concluded that the indicators of algebraic thinking skills that appear most frequently are in generational activities.

Abstract

Introduction: Patient Safety culture (PSC) in healthcare represents a significant challenge on a global scale. However, in Indonesia data on the PSC among dental healthcare workers remain limited and knowledge about PSC among dental healthcare personnel is still insufficient. Consequently, there is a necessity for education and additional knowledge on this matter.  This study aims to analyze the patient safety culture among dental healthcare workers and identify factors associated with positive attitudes in private dental hospitals using the Indonesian Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ-Indo) Methods: A descriptive observational cross-sectional study design was used. The study was conducted among dental healthcare workers in two private dental hospitals in Jakarta and Semarang, Central Java. PSC factors were identified using bivariate analysis with Chi-square and simple logistic regression which classified responses as positive or negative based on the median of total score. The PSC score was the total score from 30 SAQ-Indo questions. Results: This study identified low, medium, good and very good safety culture levels based on percentile classification. Positive attitudes toward patient safety were found among participants from both private dental hospitals. Several factors were found to be associated with positive attitudes toward patient safety, including type of dental healthcare workers, age, level of education and practical experience. Conclusion: This study revealed patient safety attitudes among dental healthcare workers. The positive PSC scores were around 45% for the hospital in Jakarta and 32% for the hospital in Central Java. There is a need for socialization and education on PSC for dental healthcare workers at both private dental hospitals. Several factors were also found to be associated with positive attitudes toward patient safety, including professional role, age, educational level, and clinical experience. These findings may help increase awareness of patient safety at the hospital level in the future

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are pathological conditions that affect various structures of the musculoskeletal system, including nerves, tendons, muscles, joints, ligaments, and bones. MSDs are common among dentists, with the highest complaints at the neck, shoulders, back, and hands. Musculoskeletal disorders can be caused by a variety of risk factors, and posture while performing dental care procedures is one of them. The prolonged awkward posture performed by the dentist may increase the risk of MSDs. Neck pain, lower back pain (LBP), and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are the most common types of MSDs suffered by dentists. A study revealed that dentists are experiencing lost productivity due to MSDs, caused by musculoskeletal complaints, poor sleep quality, and high stress levels. Therefore, the understanding and implementation of ergonomic principles in dentistry is important for the prevention of MSDs. The use of dental loupes, stretching, and regular exercise can also help maintain the productivity of dentists.
