Abstract

This study focused on outlining the psychological effects on teachers caused by the implementation of online teaching and learning during the COVID 19 pandemic. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in conducting this study. There were 34 female teachers aged between 25-38 years old involved as respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire sent through WhatsApp application. The data were analyzed using interactive analysis (data condensation, data display, and data verification). The results show that 34 respondents (100%) experienced uncertainty to their students; 58.8% (20 respondents) have physical pain and fatigue; 41.2% (14 respondents) experienced demotivation; 38.2% (13 respondents) tend to procrastinate their work; 67.7% (23 respondents) have bad time management; and 94.3% (32 respondents) experienced the feeling of isolation. Hence, it is suggested that educational institutions provide a care unit to handle any potential problems on teachers’ mental health. Keywords: mental burdens, online teaching, psychological health, psychological effects, and COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the educational system has changed. This brought a significant shift to class and teaching management as well. Teachers manage their classes in various ways by utilizing digital platforms. This study aims at finding out students’ perspective on using website in the teaching and learning process. This study was conducted by using qualitative approach design, with the descriptive case study method. There were 17 university students at Universitas Teuku Umar who were involved as the respondents in this study. In data collection, an interview set consisting of 6 questions was distributed to students. Later, the data were analyzed using interactive analysis through the three steps, which are data identification, data display, and data verification. The result shows that students have positive feedbacks toward the use of websites during online learning rather than other digital platforms. The reasons are the constant availability, length adequacy, and completeness. The implication of this study is that it is more preferrable for students to learn by using websites—or better known as e-learning system—rather than other platforms. Keywords: learning websites, e-learning, positive feedback, digital classroom, COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study investigates the most difficult parts in listening comprehension test faced by undergraduate students from Universitas Teuku Umar. The subject was 30 students who have taken the TOEFL test more than three times. The study used descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from students’ TOEFL score and interview. This study focused on 13 aspects of short dialogues (synonym, similar sound, Who, What and Where, Passive, Negative Expression, Double Negative, Negative with Comparative, “Almost Negative”, Expression of Surprise, Expression of Agreement, Uncertainty and Suggestion, Wishes and Untrue Condition, Idiomatic Expression) which adopted from Longman Complete Course for the TOEFL Test. The result found that the most difficult aspects in listening comprehension of short dialogue test were similar sound, uncertainty and suggestion, idiom words, and synonym. It was revealed that the most difficult aspect in listening Part A (short dialogue) is similar sound that was proven from students’ incorrect answer (97%), only 3% of them answered correctly, followed by Uncertainty and Suggestion (94%) and idiom words (94%), only 2% of students answered correctly from each of the aspect, and synonym (90%), 3% of them chose the right answers. The result of interview found that most of them got unfamiliar with the sound, lack of practice and low motivation in learning a foreign language. It can be stated that the most difficult aspect in listening short dialogue is similar sound and the factors that cause them hard to answer short dialogue part come from external (unfamiliar sound) and internal problems (lack of practice and low motivation). Keywords: Listening Comprehension, Short Dialogue Problems, TOEFL Test.

Abstract

This review article presents varied perspectives on teaching methods used in speaking classes. The aims of this study is to give insights on teaching methods that can be adopted, combined, or adapted in accordance with the actual condition of the classes. This information is considered to be important for English teachers, specifically, and for all language instructors and researchers, in general. There are 12 research articles being reviewed in this article under the topic of teaching methods in speaking. These articles were summarized to see the essentials being delivered, challenges presented, and further queries left unanswered which are beneficial for further research to be explored. The result shows that the most striking element in speaking classes is verbal oral expression. All teachers must encourage their students to speak. Later, it is psychological aspects (moods) and learning environment. Mostly, happy environment—not stiff and meticulous environment—brings more willingness for students to speak. Last, not giving them pressure on grammatical aspects is also a spur towards their motivation to speak. Keywords: Teaching Speaking, Learning Speaking, ELT Methods, and EFL Methods
