Abstract

One of the good sources of animal protein comes from meat because it contains various kinds of nutrients needed by the body including protein, carbohydrates, water, vitamins, fats and various essential amino acids. The presence of high nutritional value in meat can also be utilized by various microorganisms to grow so that it can reduce the quality of meat. Some of these microorganisms can be transmitted to humans and cause disease or also known as zoonotic diseases. One way to prevent the growth of microorganisms in meat is by preserving meat using natural ingredients that can come from plants. One of the plants that has the potential to inhibit bacterial growth is Salam leaves (Eugenia polyantha, Weight.). The purpose of this study was to determine the value of the content in Salam Leaves (Eugenia polyantha, Weight.) and to determine the effect of giving Salam Leaf extract (Eugenia polyantha, Weight.) to early decay, pH value and Total Bacterial Colony. The study began with the collection of Salam leaves (Eugenia polyantha, Weight.) and then the extract was made. The extract obtained was then diluted and stored. The research was continued by taking meat samples from the Traditional Market in Surabaya and then cut into uniform sizes and soaked in Salam leaf extract with different concentrations. After incubation, the meat quality was tested for the beginning of spoilage, pH value and total bacterial colonies. The results of the observations showed that the best results were found in the P4 treatment with an extract concentration of 20%. This result is indicated by the lack of fog formed in the initial spoilage test, the pH value is close to the ultimate pH of the meat and a low total bacterial colony.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Foot and mouth disease is a disease that has a big impact on economic sector of livestock farmers. Foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks result in increased livestock deaths, decreased livestock production, body weight, and livestock reproductive health. Cattle are one of the livestock animals that support meat self-sufficiency and also included in the ruminant livestock group. It can convert low nutritional value feed into high nutritional value food. The meat demand continues increase over tim, thus it needs to be supported by an adequate increase in livestock population. The good reproductive status checks and adequate health services for livestock are needed to ensure the livestock population. This community service regarding the reproductive health status of livestock is important to provide education to the farmers. This community service targets livestock groups in Jatianom District, Klaten Regency. The results showed  the reproductive status of livestock in the Tani Makmur and Lembu Suro groups, were quite good. Implementation of communication, information and education on farmers' understanding of foot-and-mouth disease can be carried out as an effort to prevent and treat reproductive disorders in brooms with the aim of increasing pregnancy rates, reproductive performance and reducing livestock mortality rates. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance in pets, especially cats, has become a serious global health challenge. The irrational use of antibiotics, whether excessive or inappropriate, accelerates the emergence of resistant bacteria that can potentially spread to humans and the environment. This study aims to identify the presence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli and analyze its resistance patterns in domestic cats in East Surabaya. A total of 35 rectal swab samples were collected from pet cats and tested at the Veterinary Public Health Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Wijaya Kusuma University, Surabaya. The samples were isolated using the selective MacConkey Agar medium and confirmed as Escherichia coli through Gram staining, biochemical tests, and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The results showed that 94.3% (33/35) of the samples contained Escherichia coli. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed resistance rates of 27% (9/33) to ampicillin, 24% (8/33) to streptomycin, and 12% (4/33) to tetracycline. Additionally, 9.1% (3/33) of the isolates were classified as multidrug resistance, showing resistance to all three antibiotics (AMP-TE-S). Other resistance patterns included AMP-S (6.1%) and TE-S (3.1%). The high resistance rate of Escherichia coli in domestic cats highlights the critical role of pets as potential reservoirs of resistant bacteria, which may impact human health through direct contact or environmental transmission. Therefore, raising awareness and educating pet owners and veterinary professionals on the prudent and responsible use of antibiotics is essential. The One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health, is a strategic measure to prevent the future spread of antimicrobial resistance.
