Abstract

Paraquat toxicity occurs through the high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which cause damage due to oxidative stress. Antioxidants can reduce damage through prevention of oxidative stress. Taurine has shown the ability to act as an antioxidant. The aim of this research is to find a effect of antioxidant taurine to decrease kidney damage caused by oxidative stress due to paraquat by looking at the histopathology changes. 25 male adult mices from strain DDY were used and divided into five treatment groups; C(-) (Aquadest IP), C(+) (Paraquat 30mg/kg), P1 (Paraquat 30mg/kg + Taurine 250mg/kg), P2 (Paraquat 30mg/kg + Taurine 500mg/kg) and P3 (Paraquat 30mg/kg + Taurine 1000mg/kg). All groups were given treatment intraperitoneal for twenty one days. The mices were sacrificed where kidney were collected for histopathology preparation. The parameters measured were renal histopathological changes in form of degeneration and necrosis. The results show that taurine administration had an effect on decreased degrees of damage to kidney tubular cells, with a decrease in the mean degree of renal tubular degeneration and necrosis. Degeneration of renal tubular cells in groups (P2) reduced compared to the group (C+) there were significant differences (P <0.05). Necrosis of renal tubular cells in groups (P1, P2) reduced compared to the group (C+) there were significant differences (P <0.05).  In conclusion, this research proves that administration of paraquat causes renal histopathological changes which are characterized by degeneration and necrosis. It also proves that taurine dose of 500 mg/kgBB could provided optimal effect.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa) on mortality and histopathology of Ae. aegypti instar III as an effort to control Ae. aegypti as a disease vector without causing resistance to the larvae. The extraction process uses the maceration method. This type of research is a laboratory experiment with research subjects Ae. aegypti instar III of 700 individuals, which were divided into 7 treatment groups (1 negative control group using distilled water and 1% DMSO, 1 positive control group using 1000 ppm abate, ethanol extract of ketapang leaves with concentrations of 2000 ppm, 2500 ppm, 3500 ppm, 5000 ppm, 7000 ppm) and 4 repetitions. The results of this study indicate that the negative control (K-) mortality rate is 0% and the positive control (K+) mortality percentage is 100%. The results of the ethanol extract of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa) on the mortality of Ae. aegypti instar III in treatment one (P1) the percentage of mortality was 17%, treatment two (P2) the percentage of mortality was 21%, treatment three (P3) the percentage of mortality was 23%, treatment four (P4) the percentage of mortality was 27%, and treatment five (P5) the percentage of mortality is 42%. Histopathological observations on larvae that died after being exposed to ethanol extract of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa) for 24 hours damaged the basement membrane, peritropic membrane and epithelial cells. It can be concluded that the ethanol extract of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa) is effective as a larvicidal against Ae. aegypti instar III but can cause damage to the midgut and cause death of the larvae.

Abstract

Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) is traditionally used for diabetes treatment in Indonesia. It’s contains antioxidant that prevent the free radicals due to hyperglycemic condition. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the ability of the ethyl acetate fraction of bay leaf in male white rats had hyperglycemia due to alloxan administration. This study used laboratory tests in which up to 24 white rats were randomly separated into six groups. Intraperitoneal administration of alloxan at a dose of 170 mg/Kgbw is used to induce hyperglycemia. A group of healthy rats (K-) were administered 0,5% CMC Na suspension 1mL/day. A group of hyperglycemic rats (K+) received metformin at a dose of 45 mg/Kgbw/1mL/day, while a group of hyperglycemic rats (P0) received 0.5% CMC Na suspension at a dose of 1mL/day. Three hyperglycemia treatment groups received different amounts of ethyl acetate fraction of bay leaf for 14 days. The P1 group received 125 mg/Kgbw/1mL/day of bay leaf ethyl acetate fraction extract, the P2 group received 250 mg/Kgbw/1mL/day, and the P3 group received 500 mg/Kgbw/1mL/day. Blood glucose levels were measured before and after alloxan administration, and then again on day 14. After 14 days of treatment, all rats were euthanized, and blood from the heart was collected to examine the insulin levels. To determine the differences between treatments, statistical analysis utilizing ANOVA was used, followed by Duncan's test. The findings revealed administered an ethyl acetate fraction of bay leaf can lower blood glucose and increased insulin levels in rats had hyperglycemia.

Abstract

This study aims to determined the effect of watermelon's inner rind extract (Citrullus lanatus) towards the integrity of the plasma membrane and morphological abnormalities of male Norway rats's spermatozoa (Rattus norvegicus) after being exposed to hot temperature. The content of lycopene in the inner rind of watermelon serves an antioxidant counteracting free radicals. A total of 20 male Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) were used in this study with an average age of 2 months. The study was divided into five treatments and four replications, consisting of: K(-) as negative control given CMC Na 0.5% as much as 0.5 ml, P0 as positive control was exposed to 40° C for 1 hour and CMC Na 0.5% of 0.5 ml. P1, P2 and P3 are exposed to 40° C for 1 hour and inner rind extracts of  watermelon with a multilevel dose of P1: 20mg/head/day, P2: 40mg/head/day, and P3: 80mg/head/day that each dose was dissolved in CMC Na 0.5% of 0.5 ml. The results showed that giving inner rind extract of  watermelon to the rats increased the integrity of the plasma membrane and decreased morphological abnormalities of male rat's spermatozoa (Rattus norvegicus). The result of increased the integrity of the plasma membrane and highest decreased morphological abnormality was shown by P3 group given a dose of 80 mg/head/day.

Abstract

Repeat breeding is a reproductive disorder that harms dairy farmers because of the unachieved target to obtain one calf per year and decreased milk production. The repeat breeding syndrome can be caused by malnutrition. This study aimed to determine the effect of feeding silage, complete feed, and growth promoters in repeat breeder cows to restore the services per conception (S/C) and daily milk production. Thirty repeat breeder Holstein Friesian cows were divided randomly into three groups. The control group (P0) was fed 30-40 kg forage and 3-4 kg concentrate/head/day. Group P1 was given 8-10 kg silage or complete feed alternately every day; whereas P2 was given the same as for the P1 group, added with 10 ml growth promoter/head/day. Milk production and S/C were measured after six months of treatment. The results showed that the P1 and P2 groups returned S/C to normal (1.40 ± 0.52 and 1.30 ± 0.48), while the S/C of P0 group was 3.20 ± 0.63 (p <0.05). Daily milk production in the P1 and P2 groups (14.20 ± 1.40 and 14.60 ± 1.43 l/d) was also higher (p <0.05) than the control group (8.30 ± 1.06 l/d). It could be concluded that feeding silage and complete feeds alternately daily, with or without the addition of growth promoter, improved the S/C to the normal range and increased milk production.

Abstract

Problems in the COVID-19 pandemic era for cows cattle farmers were limited skills of farmers in processing of feed without forage in order to reduce production costs and anticipate prolonged droughts. The government's steps to overcome these problems are by providing business capital assistance, deferring loan payments, and assisting cows cattle farmers. The Regional Superior Product Development Program (RSPD) aims to determine the increase in body weight of various types of cattle using feed without forage and growth promoters in the COVID-19 pandemic era of SMEs of cows cattle fattening. Data was collected by interview/questionnaire methods and making feed without forage, growth promoter, and fermentor. The feed from RSPD was applied to five types of cows cattle (local cattle, ongole crossbreeds, madura cattle, limousin crossbreeds and Simmental crossbreeds). This activity was carried out from February until June 2021. The results showed that farmers skill in making feed without forage, growth promoters, and fermenters has been improved and also type of cows cattle with good weight gain has been determined. In conclusion, the production of feed without forage, growth promoters, and fermentor in the COVID-19 pandemic era could be done by the cattle farmers independently. Limousin and Simmental crossbreeds had good weight gain compared to local cattle, ongole crossbreeds and madura cattle.
