Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Why does poverty remain persistently high in Madura, Indonesia, despite ongoing improvements in socio-economic development and educational access? This study investigates the determinants of poverty from human development and educational empowerment perspectives by examining the roles of the Human Development Index (HDI), unemployment, household consumption, and regional income. The findings reveal that improvements in human development significantly reduce poverty, highlighting the importance of educational attainment, health conditions, and human capability enhancement in promoting welfare. Household consumption also exhibits a significant relationship with poverty, suggesting that household welfare and purchasing capacity remain important determinants of poverty outcomes. In contrast, unemployment and regional income do not have statistically significant effects on poverty, indicating that labor market status and aggregate economic growth alone are insufficient to explain poverty persistence in Madura. These findings suggest that poverty reduction depends not only on economic expansion but also on the capacity of individuals and communities to convert available opportunities into sustainable welfare improvements. The study contributes to the literature on poverty, human development, and educational empowerment by demonstrating the central role of human capability formation in addressing persistent poverty. The findings further highlight the importance of strengthening educational empowerment, human capital development, and community capability as key policy priorities for achieving inclusive and sustainable poverty reduction in peripheral regions.

Abstract

The development of the modernization era is characterized by rapid technological changes that change individual consumption patterns. This problem is evidenced by pre-research that shows changes in individual consumption patterns, especially school students. This study aims to analyze the effect of the use of electronic money and peers on impulse purchases in SMA 10 Surabaya students. This study uses a quantitative approach with data collection techniques through distributed questionnaires. The sample of this study amounted to 199 grade 10 students of SMAN 10 Surabaya. The data of this study was analyzed using multiple linear regression with the help of SPSS version 22 tool. The results of the study showed that partially the use of electronic money and peers had a positive and significant effect on impulsive buying. This influence occurs due to technological changes that make it easier for individuals to carry out purchasing activities using electronic money, by using electronic money can increase efficiency in transactions. In addition, the influence of social pressure from the peer environment provides support or positive assessment of a certain form so that the individual will be encouraged to follow his peer group. This pattern is followed by the goal of individuals gaining recognition for their peer groups and maintaining a social image in their friendship environment. The novelty in this study lies in the research object that focuses on high school students.

Abstract

Background. Economic education is expected not only to improve students’ academic achievement but also to empower learners to become active, independent, and responsible decision-makers. Although differentiated learning has been widely recognized as a learner-centered instructional approach, empirical evidence regarding its contribution to student empowerment in economics education, particularly within Indonesia’s Independent Curriculum, remains limited. Purpose. This study aimed to examine the effect of differentiated learning on students’ learning outcomes while demonstrating its role as an instructional approach for empowering high school students in economics education. Method. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. The participants were tenth-grade students from a public senior high school in Indonesia. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Results. The findings revealed that students who participated in differentiated learning achieved significantly higher learning outcomes than those who received conventional instruction. The learning process also promoted greater student engagement, collaboration, and active participation, indicating that differentiated learning supports both academic achievement and student empowerment in economics education. Conclusion. Differentiated learning is an effective instructional approach for improving students’ learning outcomes while fostering empowerment-oriented learning environments. The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on differentiated instruction by providing empirical evidence from economics education within Indonesia’s Independent Curriculum and offer practical implications for teachers seeking to implement more inclusive and student-centered learning practices
