Abstract

Radio-over-fiber (RoF) technologies address wireless communication’s need for high data rate, protocol- transparency, and flexibility. One of challenge in RoF access point design is RF amplifier requirement that match to microwave-photonic link chosen and service range needed. This paper proposes a graphical approach as systematic method to solve the challenge. The method identifies two regions, i.e. (a) scalable region where amplifiers’ output 1-dB compression point (OP1dB) improvement can enhance system’s maximum input and output power, and (b) saturation region where any improvement on amplifiers’ OP1dB cannot improve AP’s maximum input and output power. The methods have been verified by system simulations. The errors at scalable and saturation regions are less than 1 dB and the standard deviation is no more than 0.6 dB. The error values around the breakpoint between scalable and saturation regions are around 1 dB. Therefore, the proposed graphical approach can be used in the specification tradeoff between RoF access point input and output power, amplifier’s gain and OP1dB.

Abstract

Stub-loaded, square open loop resonator (SOLR) is a type of bandpass filter with dual-band response. It is believed that its center frequency values are determined by entire length of open loop resonator’s and open stub's lengths, the bandwidth values are determined by coupling between two resonators. However, design of experiments (DOE) method applied in this paper shows that the center frequency values are also affected by interaction between resonator length, stub length, and distance between the two resonators in pair. The DOE also shows that bandwidth values, both upper and lower bands, are not only affected by the distance between resonators but also by the resonator’s and stub’s lengths. Utilizing slope values of the significant factors, systematic tuning to SOLR can be done. With few steps, small error on frequency responses can be obtained.

Abstract

Variants of antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) design suitable for access point working on 0.5 – 6.0 GHz are proposed in this paper. The novel designs were produced by employing three novel techniques to conventional AVA: (i) rotated-slot pattern to shift down the frequency cutoff and enhancing bandwidth, (ii) curve design to miniaturize rotated-slot-inserted antipodal Vivaldi, and (iii) fractal-director (Cantor set) to increase the gain of antipodal Vivaldi. Using FR4 (relative permittivity of 4.4) with an overall dimension of 300 mm x 143 mm x 1.6 mm the antenna designs are able to work at a frequency of 0.472 GHz to higher than 6 GHz with a maximum gain of 11.9 dBi.

Abstract

Physical disability due to amputation can affect a person's quality of life due to limited movement in performing daily activities. Bionic hands are used to help someone with an amputation disability. This research developed a bionic hand control based on electroencephalography sensors capable of measuring the brain's bioelectric activity. The classified brain wave was then translated as activity pattern information. The alpha & beta waves were the focus of this work. This study demonstrated a method to extract and classify motor imagery of brainwave activity patterns. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method extracts motor imagery characteristics. The extraction of features is then classified by the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) method for five classes of bionic hand movement. Testing was conducted with two scenarios. The first test motor imagery without additional movement showed an accuracy of 77.20 %, while the second test motor imagery combined with head movement showed an accuracy of 84.40% for five classes. The system based on motor imagery has been implemented in a bionic hand that shows the applicability of the proposed method.

Abstract

The moving vehicles require an antenna to communicate which is placed on the vehicles and at the ground station (ground control station, GCS). Generally, GCS uses a directional antenna equipped with the drive system with the conventional proportional, proportional-integral, or proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, and step-tracking algorithms based on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI). This research used PID control method tuned with fuzzy logic based on Global Positioning System (GPS) to control a directional antenna at GCS. The resulting antenna tracker system was capable of tracking objects with a minimal error of 0° at azimuth and elevation angle and had a maximal error of 49° for a 49 km/hour speed object. The system had an average rise time of 0.7 seconds at an azimuth angle and 1.08 seconds at an elevation angle. This system can be used to control antenna direction for moving vehicles, such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and rocket.

Abstract

Abstract

M2M communication is the process of exchanging data between devices on a network of capillary systems. The communication channel used is an empty space on a TV channel with a cognitive radio mechanism combined PRMA with a fixed and periodic scheme. The scheme has a working system that allows PRMA to place data in the same free space, which causes collisions. Therefore, it needs repetition, which requires more energy and causes inefficient communication. Thus, a Multi Ultra Frame (MUF) and Payload Exchange (PE) data exchange scheme is proposed to reduce collisions and repetition by giving grades and features to the data, with the aim to achieve optimal use of empty space. An indication of efficient communication is the optimal use of empty space, which affects the throughput (PT), duty cycle (Cyl), and interference ratio (fo). The higher PT and the lower Cyl and fo, the more efficient the communication. MUF and PE schemes produce PT of 99-41%, Cyl of 1-4.4%, and fo of 10-33%. Fixed and periodic schemes produce PTof 81-21%, Cyl of 2-9%, andfo of 15-52%. Optimization of MUF and PE schemes producePTof 99-70%, Cyl of 0.5-2.2%, and fo of 8-14%. Optimization of fixed and periodic schemes produce PTof 66-35%, Cyl of 3-6%, and fo of 19-28%.

Abstract
