Abstract

The study of pronoun translation in subtitle is crucial to give insight for subtitler for maintaining the producing accurate, respectful, and culturally sensitive translations, ensuring effective communication across different languages and cultures. This research aims to identify pronoun translation in the Indonesian-English movie subtitle of Sang Pemimpi (The Dreamer) movie. This study was designed as qualitative research, with content analysis as a method of collecting the data. The analysis focused on how the pronoun in the subtitle translated from SL to TL, what are the cultural reasons of using pronoun and what are strategies used by the translator with considering grammatical and socio-cultural aspects in both the Source Language (SL) and Target Language (TL). The findings reveal three categories of pronoun translation occur in subtitle, they are pronoun to pronoun, pronoun to reference, and pronoun to omission. A total of 680 pronouns were translated, with 521 (77%) translated as pronoun to pronoun, 152 (22%) as a pronoun to omission, and 7 (1%) as a pronoun to reference. These results underscore the diverse background factors influencing why pronouns are translated, including socio-cultural and grammatical considerations. There are several subtiling strategies used by translators to translate the sentences, including genralization, direct translation, explicitation, and subtiution. These strategiess are employed to ensure fidelity to the original meaning while adapting to linguistic and cultural nuances in the target language.

Abstract

In Indonesian, intimacy, social status, and politeness can be linguistically marked. Conversely, a near equivalent English pronoun cannot always completely contextualize the foregoing aspects. This study examines the translation of pronouns in movie subtitles entitled “Noktah Merah Perkawinan” to see if aspects beyond meaning, such as politeness and hierarchy, are conveyed. Data for this study were collected from subtitles in both Indonesian and English. A parallel corpus and mark segment were created for each pronoun found in both subtitles, and pronouns were identified bidirectionally. Using Molina & Albir's translation techniques and Sneddon's analytical schemes of Indonesian pronouns, the translations were analyzed in relation to theories of politeness and grammar. The findings reveal that some translations are acceptable and semantically accurate, but some fail to convey social aspects, kinship relationships, and levels of politeness as expressed in the source language (Indonesian). We argue that this is caused by cultural and grammatical differences between Indonesian and English. These findings have significant social implications, highlighting the need for deeper cultural understanding  in translation practices. When the translated pronouns fail to convey crucial social dynamics, such as hierarchy or respect the subtitled content may unintentionally misrepresent interpersonal relationships, impacting cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

Collocations in Arabic, especially in Qur'anic texts, play a significant role in constructing linguistic meaning and function. Although corpus linguistic studies of the Qur'ān have grown, research specifically analysing collocations of verbs and prepositions in this sacred text is limited. While previous studies have focused more on analysing the semantics of individual words or their morphological relationships, this study offers a novelty by integrating corpus-based collocation analysis in examining the relationship between the verb āmana ‘believe’ and its accompanying prepositions in Surah Al-Baqarah. This study uses a corpus linguistic approach to systematically identify collocation patterns with the help of AntConc software. The analysis includes frequency of occurrence, lexical distribution, as well as semantic interpretation of collocations in the context of the Qur'an. The results show that the collocation āmana bi ‘believe in’ is the most dominant form, appearing 18 times, which reflects the transcendental faith relationship between the subject and the object of belief, such as Allah or His revelation. Meanwhile, the collocations āmana li ‘believe for’ and āmana min ‘believe from’ reveal more complex social nuances and origins of faith, suggesting that the meaning of faith in the Qur'ān has wider contextual variations compared to conventional meanings. Thus, this study contributes to the study of corpus linguistics, Qur'anic exegesis, and Arabic language teaching, particularly in understanding how collocation patterns play a role in shaping theological meaning. The novelty of this research lies in the application of corpus-based collocation analysis in the study of sacred texts, which has rarely been done comprehensively in Arabic linguistic studies. The results of this study can also support a more accurate and contextualised translation of the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the implementation of multiliteracies pedagogy in a technology-supported speaking class to enhance students' multimodal competence. Based on the fact that the State Islamic Institute Curup's (IAIN Curup) English Language Education Department's multimodal literacy skills are being hampered by the traditional literacy paradigm, this case study were held by involving 20 fifth-semester undergraduate students. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, online questionnaires, and variety of student assignments, such as digital posters and videos. The data were analyzed qualitatively using Creswell's Data Analysis Procedures, involving iterative coding to identify themes and patterns.  The results showed that students' ability to produce and evaluate multimodal texts was enhanced by the multiliteracies pedagogy. According to the data collection and rubric created to evaluate their tasks, students showed improved abilities to integrate linguistic and non-linguistic elements, which contributed to their total multimodal literacy. The students perceived the teaching program positively, highlighting its engaging, motivating, and innovative aspects. They acknowledged the acquisition of valuable digital skills alongside enhanced English proficiency. The integration of technology was deemed crucial, aligning with the needs of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, and it significantly supported students' learning processes. The study concluded that multiliteracies pedagogy, when combined with technology, effectively fostered multimodal competence and prepared students for academic, personal, and professional success. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating multiliteracies approaches   in   English language teaching to address the evolving literacy landscape of the 21st century.

Abstract

The use of meta-discourse in academic spoken or written texts has been widely investigated. However, the existence of meta-discourse as a meaning-making in informal contexts such as gossip pages remains unaddressed. This present study investigates the frequency of word classes and the use of meta-discourse markers as the meaning-making practices in the gossip columns of Insert Live and Lambe Turah. The selection of these two online media platforms is grounded in their pragmatics and national coverage. The data collection of this research utilizes the corpus method. Data were gathered from Insert Live and Lambe Turah gossip columns.  In accordance with Hyland's theory (2005), the focus of this study is on comparing the word list frequency and functions of meta-discourse markers in the gossip columns in online media. The finding reveals that Insert Live tends to emphasize object-related elements, while Lambe Turah tends to underscore event-related aspects in gossip reporting. Besides, Insert Live tends to use meta-discourse markers in gossip columns to provide clarifications derived from informants, while Lambe Turah employs meta-discourse markers to steer readers’ opinions toward believing a particular issue by producing accusations using speculative language.

Abstract

There is a growing body of research in using AI for corrective feedback in foreign language teaching. However, few studies have specifically addressed the accuracy of AI analysis in learner corpus research. This study aims to create an AI-annotated corpus whose data were obtained from learners of Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) in Indonesia with human supervision; branded it as DICO-JALF v.1.0. The aim is to measure to what extent ChatGPT accurately annotates errors. A task was first administered to collect corpus data and metadata to build the corpus. The corpus was error-annotated using ChatGPT 4.0. Human annotators manually supervised the accuracy of AI-generated annotations. Regarding errors committed by learners, it is observed that incorrect lexical choices and forms dominate the cause of errors, while underuse and overuse are minimal. It can be concluded that ChatGPT demonstrated an average accuracy of 70% correct identification of errors. Regarding error rate, the verb is the category where errors are most frequent, which maybe driven by its conjugation, a feature absent in Indonesian, the L1 of the students. This suggests that Indonesian learners' acquisition of Japanese verbs needs greater emphasis. As compared to other similar studies, this is relatively low. However, it can be argued that one factor determining the accuracy of ChatGPT annotations, or any other LLM-based tool, is the complexity of the annotation scheme they adhere to. The corpus have been made available for download. The annotations shall be readable by a corpus query system that reads XML tags. This corpus serves as a foundational resource for future research on AI-assisted error analysis in JFL learning contexts in Indonesia.

Abstract

In the realm of English teaching and learning especially for those of non-native English users, English pronunciation instruction always calls for various techniques which can meet students’ conditions that are naturally affiliated with their psychological and cultural complexities. Thus, the present study aimed at examining the impact of one of English pronunciation instruction techniques, the so-called shadowing technique, on tertiary students’ English pronunciation at IAIN Curup, Bengkulu, Indonesia. An experimental study was conducted by engaging 40 tertiary English students selected randomly. They were split into two groups, wherein 20 students were taught English pronunciation using shadowing technique, and the rest 20 students were taught English pronunciation using a conventional technique. This study revealed that shadowing technique had a positive and significant impact on students’ English pronunciation. Their English pronunciation improvement encompassed various components such as monophthongs, diphthongs, triphthongs, semi-vowels, consonants, consonant cluster sounds, strong and weak forms, linking phonemes, syllable stresses, word stresses, sentence stresses, rhythm, pitch and intonation. Further studies are expected to scrutinize the effect of shadowing technique on English pronunciation by involving more samples, making use of gender difference as a moderator variable, and testing the retention of English pronunciation improvement.
