Abstract

Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust is an oil palm pollinator insect that lives on the male inflorescence and visits female inflorescence to pollinate due to attracted by its volatile compound. The number of fruit sets of oil palm relates to the population of E. kamerunicus on a plantation. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of age of oil palm on the population of E. kamerunicus. Field research was conducted in oil palm plantations that located in Pangkalan Lada, Kotawaringin Barat District, in Central Kalimantan. The research method was by measurement of E. camerunicus population on male inflorescences and set up the sticky trap on female inflorescences. Plot with size 7000 m2 (100 trees) was selected on several ages of oil palm i.e. 6, 10 and 16 years. Each plot, the number of male and female inflorescences was counted and some inflorescences were chosen for measurement of E. camerunicus population that was conducted monthly for three months of observation. The results showed that the age of the oil palm affected the population of E. kamerunicus in male inflorescences but not in female inflorescences. The older age of oil palm, the population of E. kamerunicus in male flowers was increasing. The sex ratio of E. kamerunicus found in male and female inflorescences of oil palms tend to female bias. Based on the comparison of E. kamerunicus population between male and female inflorescences on each plot, it was found that visitation value of E. kamerunicus was highest in the young oil palm. In conclusion, increasing age of oil palm trees affected on increasing of E. kamerunicus population in male inflorescences, but visitation value on female inflorescences prone to decline.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effects of several refugia plant treatments on the diversity and number of ants in the ratoon sugarcane system. The diversity and abundance of ants in the plantation's surrounding habitats can fluctuate. Three combinations of flowering plants were used in the study: Turnera subulata Sm (Malpighiales: Passifloraceae), Cosmos sulphureus (Asteraceae: Asteraceae), and Zinnia elegans Jaqc (Asterales: Asteraceae). Ant samples were collected using yellow sticky traps and traps and yellow pan traps. R. software was used to examine all of the data. 4 subfamilies, 14 genera, and 25 species: Diacamma sp., Technomyrmex sp., Camponotus sp.1., Iridiomyrmex sp., Delichoderus sp., Leptogenys sp.; Odontomachus sp., Polyrachis sp., Pheidole sp., Tetramorium sp., Monomorium sp., Crematogaster sp., Oecophylla smaragdina was identified from the report's results, this included 1-86 individuals. Tetramorium sp. and Odonthomachus sp. were the most common ants found at the study site. Even before compared to the other treatments, the combination of refugia and Z. elegans, C. sulphureus, T. subulata treatment used to have a significant impact on the presence of ants, increasing the population by 21%. This study discovered that combining refugia could increase ant diversity in ratoon sugarcane. The diversity index value for all treatments was almost the same, in the range of 2.-9-2.82, indicating that the main composition of refugia was moderately diverse.

Abstract

While a large number of farmers in the tropics consider weeds to be just a nuisance, some weeds can potentially have benefits for cultivated crops. Weeds around cultivated plants can act as a biocide, soil improvement, and a food source for humans and animals, as well as a habitat for some insects. Based on the regression analysist, weed density has a relationship to the diversity of predatory arthropod species (R2= 0.026; P<0.001) and the abundance of individual predatory arthropods (R2= 0.010; P<0.001). Beneficial weeds around sugarcane plantations create mutually beneficial interactions. Weeds can be used as a place to live, reproduce, and produce nutrients for predatory arthropods. Research on the role of weeds against natural enemies from predators in sugarcane agroecosystems is also rarely studied. In this study, the focus was on the association of weeds with the diversity and abundance of predatory arthropods in the sugarcane agroecosystem.

Abstract

Different cultivation techniques for rice (Oryza sativa L.) are known to affect arthropod populations and diversity levels. This research was conducted to study how arthropod diversity can be affected by different cultivation techniques. The research was carried out from October 2022 to March 2023. Arthropod diversity observations were carried out in the organic rice field of Kampung Pertanian Organik Brenjonk and a conventional rice field belonging to a farmer in Penanggungan Village, Trawas District, Mojokerto Regency. Data were collected weekly for 12 observations. Arthropods were collected using passive methods, such as pitfall and yellow sticky traps, and active methods, such as sweep netting and handpicking. The data were analyzed to assess the diversity level. The results showed more arthropods in the organic rice field, with 1815 individuals consisting of 4 classes, 13 orders, 52 families, 70 genera, and 74 morphospecies. In contrast, in the conventional rice field, 1028 individuals were found, consisting of 3 classes, ten orders, 28 families, 32 genera, and 33 morphospecies. The calculation results of arthropod diversity levels showed that the organic field is better than the conventional field.

Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an invasive pest originally from Central America. The S. frugiperda attack was first documented in Indonesia in 2019. Due to its voracious feeding habits, S. frugiperda can lead to significant losses. This study aims to provide insights into the  developmental patterns, births, and deaths of S. frugiperda, utilizing corn as the main host and spinach as an alternative host. The research was conducted at the Pest Laboratory and wire house of  Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya from February 2023 to April 2023. This study included two treatments and ten replicates, requiring a total of 500 eggs with 25 individuals for each replicate. The results showed that the survival curve and survival rate of S. frugiperda in both treatments were classified as type I curves. The values of gross reproduction rate (GRR), net reproduction rate (Ro), intrinsic growth (r), and average generation length (T) in corn leaves were 1,280.20; 518.48; 0.27; 30.79, respectively.  In contrast, the corresponding values for spinach leaves were 927.09; 322.15; 0.21, 36.23. Based on the biological data and demographic parameters, it  can be concluded that spinach plants  may serve as viable as alternative hosts for S. frugiperda.

Abstract

Abstract

Coffee (Coffea sp.) is one of the leading commodities in the Indonesian plantation sector. The low productivity of coffee plants can be caused by several factors, one of which is the loss caused by the Coffee Fruit Borer (CFB) Hypothenemus hampei Ferr (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). This research aims to study the flowering phenology of coffee plants and the influence of different plant varieties on the phenology of the CFB. The research was conducted using an exploratory survey method and laboratory analysis. Based on the results, the phenology of H. hampei in each phase has different characteristics, and it was found that there is overlap in the phenology phases of coffee fruit, which causes the life cycle of H. hampei to remain uninterrupted throughout the year. The highest population of H. hampei was found in the BGN 371 compared to the BP cultivar.

Abstract

Abstract

The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program was implemented by the government from 1989-1998 through Integrated Pest Management Farmer Field School (IPM-FFS) activities. However, not all regions received this socialization. The uneven socialization activities regarding IPM have resulted in not all farmers having good knowledge about IPM and not all attitudes and actions taken by farmers are in accordance with IPM. Therefore it is necessary to study the evaluation of the level of success of the IPM program that has been implemented. The research was conducted in Purwoasri Village and Langlang Village by interviewing 20 farmers from each village with a questionnaire containing farmer characteristics, farming characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and actions of farmers in IPM. The data obtained was analyzed descriptively by simplifying the data to make it easier to interpret. The results of the research show that the IPM program in Purwoasri Village has been quite successful because IPM farmers are better than nonIPM farmers in terms of farming characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and actions in IPM.
