Abstract

Research on student motivation within the Socio-Scientific Issues-based ASICC model for ecosystem topics remains limited, despite its critical role in achieving deep learning principles. This study aims to uncover students' motivation to learn biology. A standard Likert-scale-based instrument was used to measure student motivation. Data were obtained from this classroom action research based on lesson study. The average student motivation scores in each cycle were compared. Then, the student motivation data was also analyzed by comparing the dimensions of motivation according to Glynn's motivation theory. The results showed a significant and consistent increase in learning motivation from the pre-cycle to the second cycle, indicating better homogeneity of motivation. This increase was also reflected in the shift in the distribution of motivation categories, where students with high and very high motivation increased. An interesting finding from this study was that students were motivated to learn by the encouragement of grades motivation. The Socio-Scientific Issues approach to biology learning was realized by implementing ecosystem learning through the ASICC learning model. Environmental issues and cases can increase student learning motivation. However, an in-depth analysis conducted in this study revealed that students' grade motivation dimension was higher than other motivational dimensions. Presenting environmental issues or cases should be able to enhance intrinsic motivation. This finding suggests that grade motivation was the most easily stimulated dimension of motivation before developing motivation in other dimensions.

Abstract

Despite the emphasis on integrating critical reasoning and health literacy in 21st-century biology education, current learning practices remain teacher-centered, dominated by low-order assessments, and unsupported by contextual, technology-enhanced materials, creating a gap between curricular expectations and students’ actual competencies. This study developed an Augmented Reality (AR)-based e-module with Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) approach on the circulatory system to enhance health literacy and critical reasoning skills of grade XI students. The urgency arose from findings at SMA Negeri 1 Depok showing teacher-centered biology learning, low health literacy, LOTS-dominated evaluation, and conventional e-modules lacking SSI and AR integration. Using the ADDIE model, the e-module was validated by two experts and a biology teacher, then tested through quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design with 72 students (36 experimental, 36 control) at SMAN 1 Depok Sleman. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney test. Results showed the AR-based SSI e-module: (1) integrated SSI features with AR video animation technology, (2) met acceptable validity from expert judgment, (3) was practical for teaching circulatory system, and (4) effectively improved health literacy (N-Gain 0.41) and critical reasoning (N-Gain 0.70) with significant differences between groups (p < 0.05). This study transformed biology learning from teacher-centered to student-centered while optimizing productive gadget use to shape critical-thinking Pancasila Student Profiles, opening opportunities for content expansion, advanced AR technologies integration, and sustainable 21st-century biology learning innovation.

Abstract

Background: The development of biology learning media requires pedagogical skills, conceptual understanding, and representation skills. However, research examining how pre-service teachers integrate these three elements in the design thinking process to develop learning media is still very limited. This study aims to identify the types of biological concepts chosen by pre-service biology teachers in the development of learning media, investigate how they represent abstract biological concepts, and analyze their thinking process in designing learning media. Methodology: The study employed a concurrent mixed-methods design to examine pre-service biology teachers’ design thinking through analysis of blueprints and photos of learning media developed by seven groups; data were coded for concept types, representation types, and design thinking processes, with only concept types analyzed quantitatively using percentage calculations across groups. Findings: The results showed that the types of biological concepts selected were structure, system, and process. The consistency of all groups in using visual representations, symbols, and narratives for all types of concepts demonstrates the pedagogical awareness of pre-service biology teachers regarding the importance of integrating multiple representations to support meaningful concept understanding. From a design thinking perspective, students went through the stages of empathy, defining problems, generating ideas, and selecting the media to be developed. Contributions: This study shows that pre-service biology teachers have developed representational competence, but they still tend to prioritize visual appeal over conceptual support. These findings recommend strengthening pre-service biology teachers’ skills in designing learning media that promote deep conceptual understanding, not merely visual appeal

Abstract

This research aims to develop Problem-Based Learning-based learning video media on the topic of the digestive system that can improve the health literacy of high school students, especially class XI MIA, and assess the feasibility of the developed learning video media. This research is based on the fact that the level of health literacy of high school students in Indonesia is still low, and classroom learning is still not directed to improve students’ health literacy, so it is necessary to develop a learning medium that can help improve the health literacy of high school students, especially class XI MIA. The type of research used in this study is development research (RD), which follows the 4D development model by Thiagarajan (1974), modified into 3 stages: Define, Design, and Development. The research instruments include interview guidesheets and product feasibility assessment questionnaires, with a 1-5 Likert scale. The research data were then analyzed using descriptive techniques. The research produced a biology learning video based on Problem-Based Learning on the human digestive system to help students improve their health literacy. The results of the study also showed that the assessment by material experts of all aspects of the developed learning video obtained a media feasibility percentage of 100%. The assessment by media experts from all aspects obtained a feasibility percentage of 88.46%. The average percentage of eligibility, based on assessments by material and media experts, falls within the “Very Feasible” category. This means that the video media of biology learning based on Problem-Based Learning on the topic of the digestive system is suitable for use in learning. The results of this study show that the development of PBL-based video media can be a strategic alternative for biology learning, integrating concept mastery with improvements in students’ health literacy.
