Abstract

This article examined about the important of using dictionary in English language learning. We cannot deny in learning a foreign language, we need to consult a dictionary. It is supported by Laufer in Koca believes that when word looks familiar but the sentence in which it is found or its wider context makes no sense at all, the learner should be encouraged to consult a dictionary. Sometimes the learners are reluctant to find out the other meaning of word  from dictionary, as a result the meaning of that word is not based on the context of the sentence. This article also discussed about types and purpose of using dictionary, criteria of good dictionary, monolingual and bilingual dictionary use and skills in using dictionary.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out kinds of text contained in the reading passage found in English textbook entitled English Alive for Senior High School Grade X published by Yudhistira and  the readibility level of reading text material in English textbook entitled English Alive for Senior High School Grade X published by Yudhistira.This study is a descriptive qualitative study which used content analysis as the method of the study. The method is used to describe the content of the textbook. One of the purposes of this method is to identify bias, prejudice, or propaganda in textbook presentation. The object of this study is English textbook entitled English Alive for Senior High School Grade X first and second semester published by Yudisthira. The textbook consists of ten Chapters with illustrations. The book composed based on KTSP curriculum. The data were collected by using document analysis. In calculating readibility level, the researcher employed the Flesch readability formula.Research findings reveals that from the result of analysis there are five kinds of text, namely recount, narrative, procedure, descriptive and news items texts. Based on the result of calculating the readibility level only five texts from sixteen texts are relevant to the students of Senior High School.

Abstract

The objectives of the research entitled “A Study on Students’ Difficulties in Learning Vocabulary” were to find out kinds and factors of students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary.  The subject of this study was the students of the first semester of English Education Department at IAIN who took vocabulary class. This study employed a qualitative research design, implementing characteristics of a case study. For gaining the data, the researcher used interview and questionnaire. All the data were analyzed descriptively. The findings showed that the students still faced the problems or difficulties in vocabulary learning. Kinds of difficulties faced by students in vocabulary learning were various. Kinds of difficulties faced by the students were (1) almost all of the students have difficulties in pronouncing the words, (2) how to write and spell, (3) the different grammatical form of a word known as inflections was one of causes of students difficulties in learning vocabulary. In addition, (4) the students found difficulties in choosing the appropriate meaning of the words and (5) also still confuse in using the word based on the context. The last, (6) the students were also still confuse when they found words or expression that were idiomatic. There were some factors that caused students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary (1) the written form is different from the spoken form in English, (2) The number of words that students need to learn is exceedingly large, (3) the limitations of sources of information about words, (4) The complexity of word knowledge. Knowing a words involves much more than knowing its dictionary definition, (5) causes of lack of understanding of grammatical of the words, (6) the incorrect pronunciation is often caused by the lack of sound similarity between English and the students’ native language.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to find out whether: (1) Electronic Dictionary ismore effective than Printed Dictionary in teaching Vocabulary; (2) the studentswith high level of self-efficacy have better vocabulary mastery than those withlow level of self-efficacy; and (3) there is an interaction between teachingmedia and students’ self-efficacy. The experimental research was carried out atInstitut Agama Islam Negeri Raden Intan, Lampung in the Academic Year of2012/2013, from October to December 2012. The samples which took two classeswere done using cluster random sampling technique. Each class was divided intotwo groups students who have high and low self-efficacy. The techniques whichwere used to collect the data were questionnaire and vocabulary test. The twoinstruments were tried out to obtain valid and reliable items. The researcheranalyzed the data using ANOVA or analysis of variance and Tukey test. Theresult of research findings leads to the conclusion that: (1) using electronicdictionary is more effective than printed dictionary to teach vocabulary for thefirst semester students of English Education of Institut Agama Islam NegeriRaden Intan, Lampung; (2) students having high self-efficacy have bettervocabulary mastery than students having low self-efficacy; and (3) there is aninteraction between teaching media and self-efficacy. Results indicated that anElectronic Dictionary is an effective learning tool that can enhance vocabularylearning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the Pathway to English textbook of the eleventh grade at the first semester fulfilled syllabus points of the 2013 curriculum and how broad they presented. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The data would be gathered from document analysis of an English textbook entitled Pathway to English published by Erlangga. The Pathway to English textbook had fulfilled syllabus points of 14 from 16 items of basic competence and 6 from 6 items of learning material. Each basic competence was provided in some exercises of 4 English skills. The learning materials were successfully included and developed supported materials which interpreted about social function formed cooperating tasks, text structures were available and related the other rules of text structures, and language features were available and were developed based on suitable vocabulary, exercise of pronunciation and intonation, and related grammar to support the materials of modals, adverb, tenses, connector, etc. It was also provided and developed appropriate topics and multimedia using based on the syllabus guidance. On the other hand, this textbook had weakness about there were not available BC 4.5 and BC 4.6 criteria and lack notes of enrichment vocabulary and pronunciation.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to verify the relationship between students’ metacognitive awareness and their writing anxiety. The researchers used descriptive statistics and the Pearson’s correlation coefficient to find out the relation. Data were collected by distributing two questionnaires, Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) and Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) to 27 students who were at intermediate level and taking Academic Writing subject in English Department of State Islamic University of Raden Intan Lampung. The data were analyzed using SPSS. From the results, itrevealed that there was a significant correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and their writing anxiety. The finding proved that Metacognitive awareness played a necessary role in increasing students’ writing performance by reducing the anxious feeling in the writing activities

Abstract

Abstract. Gender stereotype is concerning traits and roles possessed by females and males which distinguish them from each other. It dominantly gives the ruinous impact and it possibly appears in a textbook. The objective of this research was to analyze gender stereotypes of visual images in When English Rings A Bell published in 2017. This research was in descriptive qualitative research with content analysis design, and used two components of gender schema theory – feminine and masculine traits, and feminine and masculine occupations. Documentation was applied to collect the data. To carry out the data analysis, the researcher referred to the three stages provided by Ary. The results showed that from trait aspect, generally males and females were described in common, but in two points they were showed differently; many female pictures were described with short and curly hair, and several male pictures were depicted with the bangs on their hair. Moreover, lots of females were described with darker skin, while the bright skin was described for lots of male. The occupations aspect revealed that some occupations were only described for male while the occupations; teacher, meal server, biker, hospital work, and the child care activity, were described for both of male and female. Overall, it could be said that gender stereotypes still dominantly appeared in male and female pictures. Additionally, the presentation of male and female picture showed that male pictures were being the majority, with 265 (54.75%) were male pictures, while 219 (45.25%) were female pictures, it meant that male and female were presented unequally in this textbook. Key words:gender stereotypes, gender schema theory, visual images, textbook

Abstract

This study is based on the issue of character value, which has recently spread out as many as social problems in Indonesia, as well as the phenomena around us that many inappropriate textbooks contents. Character values should be incorporated into teaching and learning materials. It is also related to the government regulation that requires the inclusion of the character values proposed by the Ministry of National Education as character building in all elements of education. The aim of this study was to examine the character values found in the texts as well as the strategies used in integrating character values in the texts of Erlangga’s English textbook for Senior High School Grade XI. This study applied qualitative research with a content analysis approach. The data source was English textbook Pathway to English, and the data were 19 texts gathered by reading and taking notes on texts in English textbook. The research findings revealed that the character values which are found in the 19 texts of English textbook being analyzed covers 16 character values proposed by the Ministry of National Education and the strategies of delivering character values in the texts consisted of two forms, explicit and implicit strategy.  Keywords: Character values, character values integration, English textbook, texts

Abstract

Today, humans must think critically to face all challenges. In order to improve Indonesia's PISA survey results, the government developed the 2013 curriculum, which emphasizes critical and creative thinking. The aims of this research were to determine the proportion of HOTS and HOTS characteristics reflected in high school English test questions. The objects of the research were the English midterm and final exams for the 10th and 11th grades in the second semester of the 2021–2022 academic year used at MAN 1 Lampung Tengah. This study used a qualitative content analysis design. The study found that in the mid-term 10 grade, there were 6 items, or 20%, labeled "very low," whereas in the mid-term 11 grade, 14 items, or 46.67%, were labeled "enough." For the final Exam 10 class, 5 items were found at 12.50%, referred to as "very low," and 13 items were found at 32.50%, referred to as "low." The outcomes of HOTS-based questions were 86.84%, with questions about critical thinking abilities being the most prominent. This was followed by HOTS questions that help students develop creative thinking abilities (10.52%) and questions that aid in the development of problem-solving skills (2.63%).

Abstract

This research aims to present the design of a database-based information system in managing teacher and student data at Ulul Al-Baab High School Sukabumi, West Java. The method used in collecting data for the purposes of designing the system in this research is using interviews, literature studies, and prototypes. The results of the research show that at least the website can help the Ulul Al-Baab Senior High School, Sukabumi, West Java, in implementing teacher and student data management, which was initially done manually and can now be done online via the utilization website. Having this website can at least help you input data more efficiently and you will no longer be afraid of losing data due to unexpected things.
