Abstract

The research aims to enhance marine literacy and raise awareness among high school students in Mempawah Regency about vital role of mangrove ecosystems in maintaining coastal environmental balance. Limited student understanding has contributed to low participation in conservation efforts. A participatory educational approach was implemented through material presentation, interactive discussion, and marine equipment demonstrations. Questionnaire results indicated that over 90% of participants reported an increased understanding, with most expressing motivation to engage in mangrove conservation activities. These findings highlight the effectiveness of participatory methods in fostering marine literacy and environmental awareness. The program’s success is expected to serve as a sustainable model for environmental education in schools and can be expanded to promote ecological consciousness at the community level.

Abstract

Abstract

The degradation of coral reef ecosystems requires rehabilitation efforts to support ecosystem recovery. One method of coral reef rehabilitation is through coral planula recruitment. Crustose Coralline Algae (CCA) that grow and attach to substrates serve as settlement sites for coral larvae, thereby supporting the recruitment process. This study aimed to determine the growth ability of CCA on concrete slab substrates with different compositions of constituent materials. The substrates used were concrete slabs made from different material mixtures. The differences in mixture composition were tested to determine the most suitable mixture for supporting CCA growth. The data collected included water quality parameters and the presence of CCA attached to the concrete slab substrates. The results showed that the 1:1 mixture produced concrete slabs with better physical conditions compared to the 3:1 mixture. Water quality parameters during the study were within ranges that supported marine organism growth, with salinity values of 36–39‰ and pH values of 7–8. Visual observations indicated that CCA was able to grow and attach to the constructed concrete slab substrates.

Abstract

Kubu Raya Regency is one of the conservation areas in West Kalimantan that has extensive and productive mangrove ecosystems, including the Pantai Tengkuyung ecotourism area. This ecosystem provides an important habitat for various organisms, one of which is gastropods. This study aimed to examine the morphological characteristics of the gastropod Turritella terebra in the Pantai Tengkuyung ecotourism area. The study was conducted in February 2025 in the Pantai Tengkuyung ecotourism area, Sungai Nibung Village, Teluk Pakedai District, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan. Samples were collected through a field survey using the purposive sampling method. Based on the identification results, Turritella terebra has a medium-sized shell, light brown to dark brown in color, elongated conical in shape, dextrally coiled (dextral), and equipped with an operculum. The shell size reaches a length of 10 cm and a width of 2–3 cm. These characteristics reflect adaptations to the intertidal or tidal zone in the mangrove ecotourism area with sandy and muddy substrates. These morphological aspects are important for understanding the ecology of the species and its resilience to environmental pressures.

Abstract

Kuala Secapah Village serves as a prominent hub for capture fisheries along the coast of West Kalimantan. Alongside premium catches, local fishermen frequently haul trash fish (ikan rucah), that remains economically underutilized. Applying innovative and sustainable processing approaches to these marine resources can significantly generate added value for the community. This community service program aims to educate and train coastal women on upgrading these underutilized catches into competitive food products. The program was delivered in participatory workshop divided into two sessions: an instructional lecture and a hands-on culinary production practice. The intervention yielded substantial progress, with participants' technical knowledge skyrocketing from 64% to 99.6% regarding standardized and proper fish-processing techniques. Ultimately, this initiative successfully fosters local economic resilience by converting underutilized marine waste into high-value commodities.
