Abstract

Long-tailed Macaque Macaca fascicularis is recently considered Endangered primate based on the assumption of rapid decline due to the heavy demand in trading. To look at recent data of this Endangered primate, we conduct a mega transect survey on 5 June 2022 and 10-15 June 2022, to assess the populatons on M. fascicularis along 115 km of Calik River, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. We use direct observation to census all individuals of M. fascicularis. Our survey found a total of 1.194 individuals of M. fascicularis were encountered in Calik River. Based on the survey coverage, it is presumed that the population of M. fascicularis in this area could reach 2.000 individuals. Due to the high population, it was confirmed that this primate has become a pest for the major crops of local people. In addition, no indication of hunting or observation of local people who keep M. fascicularis as a pet. Our survey suggests M. fascicularis is the most common species in riverine habitats.

Abstract

The Long-tailed Macaque Macaca fascicularis is an Endagered primate because species' population decline very rapidly due to high levels of hunting for trade. A survey to collect data on the M. fascicularis population was carried out in the lowland areas of South Sumatra Province on 7 September-16 October 2023. This survey was carried out in 17 sites in four main districts/cities, including Palembang, Musi Banyuasin, Banyuasin and Ogan Ilir. This survey was recorded 4,316 individuals of M. fascicularis. This number suggest that M. fascicularis has good population number and still commonly found at the survey sites. Based on the survey coverage of the survey area and the total number of ??the lowlands in South Sumatra, we estimate the population of M. fascicularis in the lowlands in this province to be around 300,000 individuals. Further surveys are needed to determine the exact number of M. fascicularis populations in South Sumatra Province.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired secretion or insulin function. Treatment with synthetic drugs often causes side effects so that safer alternatives are needed such as the use of medicinal plants. This study aims to test the potential of mahogany leaf extract (Swietenia mahagoni) as an antidiabetic and determine its optimal dose in mice (Mus musculus) induced by alloxan. The study was conducted in January–March 2025 at the Laboratory of Genetics and Biotechnology and the Laboratory of Animal Biosystematics, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method. Mahogany leaf extract was obtained through the maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. Mice were divided into 5 treatment groups, including negative control (aquadest), positive control (glibenclamide 5 mg), and three groups of mahogany leaf extract doses (70, 140, and 280 mg/kgBW). The results showed that mahogany leaf extract had an effect on reducing blood glucose levels in mice. A dose of 70 mg/kgBW gave the highest effect on reducing blood glucose levels (68%), greater than doses of 140 mg/kgBW (60%) and 280 mg/kgBW (65%). The results of the ANOVA test and further Post-hoc test showed significant differences between treatment groups, where the mahogany leaf extract treatment and positive control treatment were significantly different from the negative control. It can be stated that mahogany leaf extract has the potential as an antidiabetic, and the recommended optimal dose is 70 mg/kgBW.

Abstract

Invasive alien plants pose a major threat to biodiversity, particularly in conservation areas embedded within industrial plantation forest landscapes dominated by exotic species. This study aimed to analyze the composition and dominance of invasive plants, community similarity, and their correlations with Acacia mangium and Eucalyptus pellita stands in the Protected Area of PT Musi Hutan Persada, South Sumatra. Vegetation analysis was conducted using a nested quadrat sampling method across four stand types (control, A. mangium-dominated, E. pellita-dominated, and mixed stands), with 60 purposively selected plots. Data were analyzed using the Important Value Index (INP), Jaccard similarity index, and Spearman correlation. The results identified 20 invasive plant species, with Eleusine indica as the most abundant. A. mangium and E. pellita exhibited the highest INP at the tree stratum. Similarity analysis indicated variation in species composition, with a tendency toward community homogenization in some locations (≥0.80). Correlation analysis revealed that A. mangium was positively associated with Imperata cylindrica and Chromolaena odorata, while E. pellita was associated with Clidemia hirta and Piper aduncum. These findings highlight the ecological role of exotic stands in shaping the distribution patterns of invasive plants.
