Abstract

This study aims to describe the social structure in the implementation of the Hata Situtur Poda custom in the marriage of the Angkola and Mandailing communities in Paringgonan Julu Village, Ulu Barumun District, Padang Lawas Regency, and identify the roles and responsibilities of each element in the social structure. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques include participant observation, in-depth interviews and study of related documents. Data analysis was done thematically by categorizing, describing, and drawing conclusions based on data obtained in the field. The results showed that the social structure of the implementation of Hata Situtur Poda involved various elements, namely the bride and groom, the parents of the bride and groom, the extended family of the bride and groom (kahanggi, anak boru, mora), traditional leaders (hatobangon, raja adat), religious scholars, government elements, and the wider community. Each element has specific and complementary roles and responsibilities in supporting the smooth running of the traditional procession. This tradition not only functions as a medium for conveying advice and advice on family life, but also as a mechanism for preserving cultural, moral and social values that have been passed down from generation to generation. This study concludes that the successful implementation of Hata Situtur Poda is highly dependent on a strong and organized social structure, which is able to maintain the continuity of the tradition amid the dynamics of changing times.

Abstract

The people of Simeulue Island, Aceh, have a long-standing tradition of coconut gardening. Before the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, coconut production in this area was quite high. However, in recent years, the decline in coconut production has threatened the supply of raw materials for the local processing industry. As a result, hundreds of tons of raw materials must be imported from Nias Island to meet the needs of the industry. One of the main causes of this decline is suboptimal harvesting practices. This study revealed that most coconut varieties cultivated in Simeulue are Kelapa Dalam, which has a productive age of 10 and 30 years. Based on visitation patterns, there are two types of coconut gardens: those that are regularly visited and those that are rarely visited. The rarely visited gardens are only visited during harvest time, about once every three months. The vegetation in these gardens tends to be denser, but their productivity is difficult to control. Most of the productive coconuts currently come from low-quality seeds, namely small coconuts that are not harvested because they are considered uneconomical. These seeds are often less than 1 kg; some are as big as 250 ml mineral water bottles. Efforts are needed to ensure the sustainability of the coconut industry in Simeulue; efforts are needed to provide superior seeds that can improve the quality and quantity of future harvests.

Abstract

While leveraging local potential is an established paradigm for sustainable tourism, its application in geographically isolated contexts remains complex and underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining the unique case of Kampai Island, Indonesia, a remote destination possessing underutilized natural and cultural assets. The objectives of this research are: 1) to identify the island’s tourism potential and development challenges; and 2) to formulate comprehensive strategies for sustainable growth. Utilizing a phenomenological qualitative design, data were gathered through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings highlight significant potential in natural features such as Berawe Beach, as well as cultural-historical sites including the Keramat Panjang and Mas Merah cemeteries. However, development efforts are hindered by multidimensional barriers, encompassing inadequate infrastructure, limited institutional capacity, a lack of strategic partnerships, and human resource limitations. Synthesizing these insights, the discussion proposes an integrated strategic framework. Key recommendations involve strengthening local institutions and human resources through context-specific training, fostering multi-stakeholder collaborations to leverage external resources, prioritizing participatory infrastructure development, and designing integrated tourism products based on local narratives. In conclusion, sustainable tourism on remote islands requires a holistic approach that strategically leverages local assets and addresses systemic constraints via inclusive and collaborative planning.

Abstract

North Aceh Regency is the region with the highest number of cases of child violence in Aceh Province. Of course, there are many factors behind it, one of which is the existence of a family that has not functioned optimally. This study examines how efforts to revitalize the functioning of family institutions to prevent violence against children. The research, which took place in North Aceh Regency, used a qualitative approach with observational data collection techniques, in-depth interviews, and document studies. Key informants in the study were stakeholders in the North Aceh Social Service, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and the general public. The data was analyzed using an interactive analysis model, namely: data reduction, data display, and conclusion affirmation. The results of the study found that the forms and types of violence against children that occurred in families in North Aceh were: a) physical violence; b) neglect; c) psychic violence; and 4) sexual violence. It's caused by factors of parental background and education level, family economic factors, and parental divorce. One form of social intervention that can be carried out to minimize cases of violence in the family is to restore the function of the family as the first madrasa and a shield of protection for the child. Therefore, the socialization of family functions should be improved with the main targets being families of young couples and families with a low level of education.
