Abstract

Abstract

This study aims (1) identify the farmer’s individual potential in different farm sizes and (2) analyze the relationship of basic potential, availability of man power potential, provision of production input potential, and technological mastery potential with the increasing farm size of PO Kebumen cattle. 100 respondents (breeding farmers) from 6 sub-districts known as PO Kebumen beef cattle development centers are selected using a multistage sampling method. The results of Kruskal Wallis Test explain that farmer’s individual potential of PO Kebumen beef cattle farming showed significant difference at different farm size (P<0.01). Based on the Spearman rank correlation test, the availability of technological potential and the provision of production input potential are considered as the important elements regarding to the increasing farm size of PO Kebumen beef cattle (P <0.01). The mastery of technology and the provision of production inputs are the driving factors for increasing the farm size of PO Kebumen cattle.

The study takes survey method to broiler farmers participating in contract farming programs from five nucleus companies in Banyumas Regency as its population. 50 broiler farmers are selected using the proportional random sampling method based on Slovin formula as respondents. The data obtained are analyzed by employing descriptive statistics and Correlation Rank Spearman Analysis. The results show that the farmers are averagely 44 years old with mostly junior high education, and 76% of the respondents have broiler farming as their main livelihood. The farmers have quite a long time of experience (8.92 years) in raising broiler farming. Their satisfaction of the contract farming model’s service is of medium category (score 84.02) and their perception of the nucleus companies’ service quality is of medium category (score 86.34). The Spearman Rank Correlation analysis shows that the nucleus companies’ service quality is significantly related to the broiler farmers’ satisfaction (P<0.01) with a strong correlation coefficient of 0.761. The nucleus companies’ services in broiler contract farming model must be continuously improved to increase broiler farmers’ satisfaction.

One hundred sixty goat farmers in Banjarnegara Regency were selected as respondents using a multistage sampling method. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. The analysis results showed that most of the goat farmers in Banjarnegara Regency (74.37 percent) preferred obtaining knowledge from non-extension sources. In other words, only a small proportion of goat farmers (25.63 percent) prefer to get information and knowledge from agricultural extension workers. Based on the logistic regression analysis, it was found that goat farmers' education and age of farmers were essential factors (P<0.05) in making decisions related to source in obtaining knowledge on raising goats from the agricultural extension or non-agricultural extension workers. Goat farmers in Banjarnegara Regency who have lower education prefer to get information related to goat farming from non-agricultural extension workers. Abstract
