Abstract

This study aims to examine gender representation in directive speech acts of Indonesian language teachers in Pasaman Regency Automotive Department Vocational Schools. Included in the type of qualitative research, this research applies descriptive analysis method. The research data is in the form of directive speech of male teachers and female teachers in Indonesian language learning at SMK Department of Automotive Pasaman Regency. It can be concluded that Indonesian teachers use various forms of directive speech acts, such as directions, orders, and instructions to students. Variants of the use of directive speech acts also show variations between male and female teachers, with three dominant variants commonly used by male teachers and five variants commonly used by female teachers. The results also reveal that female teachers tend to use the speech act of ordering or commanding as the dominant form, although they also show a sense of solidarity by using the speech acts of suggesting and advising. On the other hand, male teachers are more inclined to the direct approach and commanding without preamble. This difference reflects the complexity of the relationship between men's and women's language and thinking in the learning context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze grammatical cohesion in the form of references in three short stories from the October 2017 edition of Kompas: Sepucuk Amplop di Taman (Envelope in the Garden), Tanah Warisan Asal (Ancestral Heritage Land), and Toko Wong (Wong's Shop). The study focused on the types of grammatical references, such as personal and demonstrative references, used to establish coherence and coherence in the text. A qualitative descriptive approach was used based on the KORTARA corpus (Nusantara Referential Language Corpus) to identify and classify reference forms and their frequency. The analysis showed that the most dominant type of reference was the first-person singular "aku," which strengthens the narrator's position in the story. Meanwhile, demonstrative references such as "ini," "itu," "sini," and "kini" also support the spatial and temporal context of the narrative. This study demonstrates that the use of references not only serves to maintain clarity of reference in the text but also plays a crucial role in forming a cohesive narrative structure. By examining grammatical cohesion through a corpus approach, this research contributes to linguistic studies and Indonesian language teaching, particularly in understanding the interrelationships between sentences in literary discourse. This research also opens up opportunities for further studies examining grammatical cohesion in various other text genres, such as news, essays, or academic texts.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model supported by audiovisual media in improving vocational high school students' fieldwork practical (PKL) report writing skills. It also explores the role of students' reading interest in mediating these outcomes. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test–post-test control group was employed. The study involved 79 11th-grade students from SMK Negeri 7 Batam, divided into an experimental group (n=40) taught using PjBL with audiovisual media, and a control group (n=39) taught using conventional visual media. Data were collected through a PKL report writing test and a reading interest questionnaire. Statistical analyses included the Lilliefors test for normality, F-test for homogeneity, and two-way ANOVA to test hypotheses. The experimental group outperformed the control group, achieving a higher mean score (84.700 vs. 70.154). Data were confirmed to be normally distributed and homogeneous. Hypothesis testing showed that the PjBL model with audiovisual media significantly improved PKL report writing skills across both high and low reading interest groups (p 0.05). Additionally, a significant interaction effect was found between the learning model and reading interest (F = 4.899, p 0.05). The findings support the integration of PjBL with audiovisual media as an effective instructional strategy for enhancing report writing skills, particularly in vocational education. It also highlights the importance of considering students' reading interest to optimize learning outcomes.

Abstract

Writing observational reports poses challenges for vocational high school students, particularly in organizing factual information systematically. To address this issue, this study explores the effectiveness of a differentiated Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model assisted by real objects and moderated by students’ learning motivation. A quantitative experimental design with a 2×2 factorial structure was used. The population included all Grade X students at SMK Negeri 1 Padang Panjang (2024/2025), from which two comparable classes were purposively selected: X AKL1 (experimental group) and X AKL2 (control group). The experimental group was taught using a differentiated PjBL model with real objects, while the control group received conventional instruction. Instruments included a performance-based writing test and a Likert-scale motivation questionnaire. Data were analyzed using normality, homogeneity, t-tests, and two-way ANOVA in SPSS 25. The experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in writing observational reports (mean = 75.23 vs. 57.40; p 0.001). Among high-motivation students, the experimental group scored higher (84.11 vs. 81.00; p = 0.041), as did low-motivation students (67.44 vs. 56.56; p = 0.002). A significant interaction was found between the instructional model and learning motivation (Fₕ = 4.3238 Fₜ = 4.149). The findings indicate that integrating differentiated instruction, PjBL, and real objects can enhance students’ writing performance and motivation. This approach is especially effective in vocational education contexts, aligning with the Merdeka Curriculum’s emphasis on contextual, student-centered learning.

Abstract

Effective teacher-student communication is essential in educational settings, particularly through directive speech acts guided by politeness principles. This study investigates how Indonesian language teachers in junior high schools in Kikim Selatan District utilize directive speech acts and politeness strategies during classroom instruction. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving five teachers from four different schools. Data were collected through non-participant classroom observations and audio recordings. The analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, focusing on categorizing types of directive speech acts and identifying politeness principles. The analysis revealed a predominance of commands (70 instances) and challenges (49), with advising (23), suggesting (15), and requesting (5) used less frequently. The most commonly applied politeness principles were generosity (41 instances) and appreciation (38), which served to reduce the potential for face-threatening acts and foster a more respectful classroom environment. The choice of speech acts was context-dependent: calm classroom settings facilitated clear instructions and challenges, while noisy environments prompted more assertive and persuasive strategies. These findings highlight the nuanced application of speech acts influenced by classroom dynamics and underscore the importance of integrating politeness strategies into instructional communication. Teachers adapted their language based on environmental cues to maintain engagement and authority while preserving student rapport. The study contributes to the broader understanding of educational discourse by demonstrating the role of politeness in directive communication. It suggests practical applications for teacher training programs to enhance communication flexibility and empathy in classroom management.
