Abstract

A healthy canteen is one of the supporting elements of healthy campus infrastructure. Leaders' policies, engagement, and support are essential for healthy campus initiation advocacy initiatives. This qualitative case study approach aims to determine the possibility of implementing a healthy canteen in a private university. The study was conducted in Yogyakarta from July 2017 until March 2018 with informants sequentially from five university leaders, one canteen manager, ten canteen consumers, and including 15 food handlers. We collected data through in-depth interviews and then analyzed it with content analysis. Finally, we use the SWOT matrix to investigate the possibility of developing a healthy canteen at private colleges using strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The obstacle to developing healthy canteens is the limited area for infrastructure. We found environmental health problems, such as unqualified sanitary conditions and unapplied food hygiene and sanitation principles. Healthy canteen could be developed if the leaders at all levels committed to allocating spaces and sanitation infrastructure, making policies and regulations for testing the food in laboratories, training and inspecting food handlers regularly and providing quality foodstuffs, clean and healthy nutritious food, and educating customers with posters on the canteen walls.

Abstract

Background: Malaria eradication by 2030 is the UN's third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). However, malaria still poses a severe threat to public health, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, which includes The Gambia. The present study explores the factors that impact malaria transmission among artisanal small-scale miners (ASSM) in three districts in the West Coast Region of The Gambia: Kombo East, Kombo Central, and Kombo South. Methods: The researchers carried out a cross-sectional study using one hundred participants from the study area. Using a logistic regression model, the researchers looked at risk variables linked to malaria incidence in the Kombos. Results: Age (Adjusted Prevalence Ratio (APR) = 7.989 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI 1.724–37.002) and the existence of mosquito breeding places (APR = 7.685 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI 1.502–39.309) were shown to be risk variables for malaria in the multivariable analysis. On the other hand, protective factors included higher education level (APR = 0.104 with 95% CI 0.027-0.403), using insect repellents (APR = 0.138 with 95% CI 0.035-0.549), and the state of inside home walls (APR = 0.145 with 95% CI 0.0414-0.511). Conclusions: According to this study's findings, the Gambia's malaria risk variables include age and the presence of mosquito breeding grounds. In addition, having greater knowledge, using insect repellents, and having well-maintained interior walls are all protective factors against malaria. In order to eradicate malaria in Gambia's mining regions, it is strongly advised to decrease risk factors and increase prevention measures through effective communication, information, and education.

Abstract

This article discusses the impact of mental health and academic stress on students' academic performance through a literature review. The objective of this study is to identify how mental well-being and stress levels affect learning effectiveness and academic achievement. The method employed is a literature analysis of various studies that explore the relationship between mental health, academic stress, and learning outcomes. The findings indicate that stable mental health contributes positively to increased focus, motivation, and comprehension of learning materials. Conversely, unmanaged stress can impair concentration, reduce interest in learning, and negatively affect academic results. However, in certain cases, academic stress (when experienced at optimal levels, or eustress) can serve as a motivating factor that enhances academic performance. Factors such as the learning environment, social support, and teaching methods also play a role in moderating the impact of mental conditions on student achievement. Therefore, it is essential for educational institutions to provide mental health intervention programs, counseling services, and adaptive learning approaches to help students manage stress and improve their academic performance.

Abstract

This article examines the impact of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on elementary students’ learning outcomes in social studies through a literature review. The objective of this study is to identify how PjBL influences cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development, as well as creativity, motivation, collaboration, and communication skills. The method employed is a systematic analysis of 16 studies that investigate the implementation of PjBL in elementary classrooms. The findings indicate that PjBL enhances students’ understanding, retention, and application of material, promotes active engagement, and fosters 21st-century skills such as creativity and teamwork. The integration of interactive and visual learning media further strengthens learning effectiveness. However, challenges such as time constraints, large class sizes, and unequal group contributions may limit PjBL’s effectiveness if not properly addressed. Therefore, careful project planning, teacher guidance, and appropriate instructional media are essential to maximize PjBL’s benefits and support the holistic development of elementary students.

Abstract

The main problem in this study is the low quality of the learning process and students' learning motivation in Grade V. This study aims to improve the learning process and students’ learning motivation. The approach used is a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design. The research subjects consisted of one teacher and 19 students of Grade V at UPTD SDN 45 Parepare in the 2024/2025 academic year, including 13 male students and 6 female students. The research was carried out in two cycles, with four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and questionnaires. The results of the study concluded that the implementation of the Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic (VAK) learning model can improve the quality of the learning process. This is evident from the increased student engagement in the learning process, better focus and cooperation among students in completing group tasks, as well as a more enjoyable classroom atmosphere. The quality of the learning process and students’ learning motivation were found to improve, as shown by the questionnaire data filled in by the students. In Cycle I, the observations of the learning process and students’ motivation were categorized as Fair (C), while in Cycle II, both the teacher’s learning process aspect and students’ learning motivation improved to the Good (B) category. In conclusion, the implementation of the VAK learning model can enhance the learning process and students’ learning motivation in IPAS learning.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the learning motivation in Science and Social Studies (IPAS) among fifth-grade students at UPTD SD Negeri 12 Parepare. The study was motivated by the low level of student motivation, particularly in IPAS subjects. A quantitative approach was employed using a Nonequivalent Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The research population consisted of 174 students, with a sample of 40 students divided into a control class (20 students from class VA) and an experimental class (20 students from class VB). Data were collected through a learning motivation questionnaire administered during both the pretest and posttest. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive analysis showed that the experimental class obtained a higher average score (67.8) compared to the control class (61.15). Inferential analysis using the Independent Sample T-Test produced a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model has a significant effect on increasing students’ learning motivation in IPAS.

Abstract

Self-confidence plays a vital role in children’s psychological development and influences their academic, social, and emotional achievements. However, many elementary school students struggle with low self-confidence, which can hinder their learning motivation and personal growth. This community service program was conducted at UPTD SD Negeri 5 Parepare to enhance students’ self-confidence through a social-educational intervention. The program was designed with three stages: preparation, implementation, and reflection. Activities included interactive and reflective learning experiences adapted to the students’ developmental levels. The materials addressed self-awareness, setting realistic goals, positive self-talk, stepping out of the comfort zone, maintaining appearance, building positive social environments, and learning from experiences. The implementation revealed significant improvements in students’ engagement, self-expression, and self-awareness. Pre- and post-activity reflections indicated that students became more confident in participating, expressing ideas, and interacting with peers. The findings suggest that integrating social and educational strategies into character education can effectively foster self-confidence among elementary students. This program demonstrates the potential of social-educational interventions to strengthen personal growth and learning motivation in young learners.
