Abstract

Abstract – SD Negeri 12 Padang Panjang is one of the schools that has made efforts to implement the Adiwiyata program. In 2024, the school represented the city of Padang Panjang in the Adiwiyata competition at the West Sumatra provincial level; however, it did not achieve optimal results. For the 2025 Adiwiyata program, SD Negeri 12 has set a target to become the provincial representative of West Sumatra. Based on the evaluation results from 2024, it was found that the assessment indicator for Participatory-Based Environmental Activities needs improvement. One activity that can support this effort is hydroponic cultivation. A hydroponic cultivation training was conducted by 26 fifth-grade students. The training included both theoretical material and hands-on practice in cultivating green vegetables using a hydroponic system. The training was guided by two experts who are competent in the field. This training successfully increased students' knowledge of hydroponic vegetable cultivation. Moreover, over 90% of the participants demonstrated teamwork and developed a greater awareness of environmental care. This outcome is a significant contribution to supporting SD Negeri 12 Padang Panjang Barat’s efforts toward achieving Adiwiyata School status.

Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a vegetable commodity that is currently in high demand because it has many health benefits. Hydroponic cultivation is a method that can improve lettuce growth by utilizing IoT based pH and TDS sensors. This study aims to compare lettuce growth in hydroponic cultivation by applying Internet of Things (IoT)-based pH and TDS sensors and manual methods. The method used was an experimental method by comparing the average of two treatments, namely the use of IoT-based pH and TDS sensors and the manual method, with each treatment consisting of nine replicates. The results showed that the application of IoT sensors had a significant effect on increasing plant height, leaf area, wet weight, and dry weight. IoT technology can improve efficiency and productivity in hydroponic systems because the sensors can maintain a stable balance of nutrients and acidity in the solution, resulting in better plant growth. These findings indicate that the application of IoT has great potential in supporting sustainable agriculture, while also providing benefits in the form of increased production efficiency and resource savings.

Abstract

Kepok Tanjung banana (Musa paradisiaca) is a superior variety with high economic value. Tissue culture is a promising propagation method, but the acclimatization stage is a critical bottleneck. The aim of this study was to test the effect of planting medium composition on the development of Kepok Tanjung banana seedlings during the acclimatization period. A completely randomized design was used with six planting medium treatments: soil (control), cocopeat, rice husk charcoal, soil + cocopeat (2:1), soil + rice husk charcoal (2:1), and soil + cocopeat + rice husk charcoal (2:1:1). Each treatment was repeated four times, with ten plantlets per replicate. Observations were made every two weeks for 12 weeks on parameters of survival, plant height, stem diameter, leaf dimensions, leaf count, root length, and fresh and dry weight. All growth parameters were found to be significantly influenced by the composition of the growing medium, according to data analysis conducted using ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at a 5% significance level. The mixture of soil and rice husk charcoal (2:1) provided the best results, with a survival rate of 95%, plant height of 19.94 cm, stem diameter of 9.95 mm, root length of 25.25 cm, and the highest fresh and dry weights (18.87 g and 1.96 g). This combination offered an optimal balance of aeration, moisture retention, and nutrient availability, supporting the plantlets' transition from in vitro to in vivo conditions. It is concluded that a mixture of soil and rice husk charcoal (2:1) is the most effective medium for the acclimatization of Kepok Tanjung banana plantlets.

Abstract

The genus Oryza includes both cultivated and wild rice species that play an important role in global food systems and crop improvement. These species also exhibit complex evolutionary patterns, making the study of their phylogenetic relationships essential for understanding domestication and genetic diversity. In this study, phylogenetic relationships within the genus Oryza were analyzed using chloroplast matK gene sequences through a bioinformatics approach. A total of twelve species, representing both cultivated and wild taxa, were selected from the GenBank database. Sequence alignment and tree reconstruction were carried out using MEGA version 11. The phylogenetic tree was generated using the Neighbor-Joining method with the Maximum Composite Likelihood model, and its reliability was assessed through 10,000 bootstrap replications. The results show a clear distinction between cultivated and wild Oryza species. Oryza sativa (Japonica and Indica) is closely associated with O. nivara, supported by high bootstrap values, indicating a strong evolutionary link. Meanwhile, several wild species form separate clades, suggesting earlier divergence within the genus. Overall, the matK gene proves useful for describing phylogenetic relationships at the genus level, although its ability to resolve relationships among closely related species remains limited. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the evolutionary structure of Oryza and highlight the potential importance of wild rice species in future conservation and breeding efforts.

Abstract

Salinity is one of the major limiting factors in rice cultivation, negatively affecting seed germination and early plant growth. One approach that can be taken to improve seed tolerance under saline conditions is seed priming. This study aims to examine the effect of potassium nitrate (KNO3) seed priming on the germination and early growth of IR 64 rice seeds at various salinity levels. This study was an experiment designed using a completely randomized design with a single treatment factor, namely NaCl salinity levels (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM), in which all seeds were treated with 1% KNO3 seed priming prior to stress application. Each treatment was replicated four times. The observed parameters included germination percentage, root length, shoot length, seedling length, and seed vigor index. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s multiple range test at a 5% significance level. The results showed that KNO3 seed priming was able to maintain the germination percentage of IR 64 seeds at all salinity levels, with values that were not statistically significantly different. However, increasing NaCl concentrations had a significant negative effect on the morphological growth of seedlings, as indicated by a decrease in root length, shoot length, seedling length, and seed vigor index. The treatment without salinity produced the best early growth, while high salinity significantly inhibited seedling growth. Based on these results, it can be concluded that KNO3 seed priming plays an effective role in maintaining the viability of IR 64 rice seeds under saline conditions, but it is not yet fully capable of overcoming the negative effects of salinity on early plant growth.
